    Easy set up, great flavor

The Ninja OG850 Woodfire Pro XL Outdoor Grill & Smoker provides a welcome alternative to everyday cooking, in that it provides many options. Our main use has been its function as a smoker–we particularly enjoy being able to set up a pork cut or a turkey breast and letting the smoker run for the day with a little monitoring while we take care of household chores. The wood pellets help provide a fuller flavor, and the meat has been tender and consistently good as we experiment with rubs and marinades. Purchasers should consider what kind of stand or table they will want for the device, however. It has a larger footprint than a big microwave, and you’ll need at least a sturdy small table to accommodate it and your cooking tools–a stand is available as an additional purchase. Recommended–

    Outstanding!

I already own the smaller, basic Ninja Woodfire. I use it constantly. I use it regularly for smoked wings, at least every other week. I have also used it for pork shoulders, brisket, whole chicken, legs and thighs, ribs, and of course hamburgers. I love a smoky taste to my food. This will not replace my Masterbuilt 40″ electric smoker for the Thanksgiving turkeys, but it is much easier to set up, use, and by far easier to clean.OK, enough about my old one. I just included it for context, as this new one will do everything the old one did – except, more importantly, it has a 30% larger cooking surface! This is outstanding! I can cook bigger/more things with it. That itself is great. Also unlike my old one, this one has a temperature probe, so I can cook by internal temperature as well. The instructions say to only use the specialty pellets. They are quite expensive. I found some other ones from Bear Mountain (the company that makes the specialty pellets) that seem to work just as well. I just suggest being careful, I have tried some other ones that were terrible. They also sell some overpriced accessories, but what do you expect? They sell a table for $150.00 !!! that I have seen reports that it’s kinda flimsy, but I stick mine on the side shelf of my grill gazebo and it works great there. I may get the griddle and the roasting rack. They also sell some aluminum liner pans for the drip tray, which I have already ordered.Again, these Woodfires are great, I highly recommend.

    Fantastic all in one grill.

I am used to traditional smokers or grills and have had a lot of fun over the years with the whole process but due to health I just can’t work the pit all day anymore, so this Ninja grill has brought that joy back into my life. It is surprising just how well the smoked flavor is incorporated using these pellets and I love that I can utilize this to do so many things. Veggies, meats, even potatoes plus it crisps things up with the fryer setting and I truly enjoy the whole process using this smoker grill. It has built in temp gauge and comes with a fry basket, grease trap that can use disposable liners. Easy setup, easy cleanup. I love using this grill and wish I had invested in one sooner!

    Amazing results

I do traditional smoking primarily, as we love smoked meats. We also prefer charcoal grilling with real hardwood charcoal. The reason I mention this is that I was skeptical of this unit. But after a couple of cooks I am really impressed with it. For burgers and brats it is super easy and produces great results. I cooked ribs and was also impressed, not quite the same as my traditional smoke but it does it in a fraction of the time.If you decide at the last moment to have guests over you can make a very tasty smoked BBQ in a fraction of the time it normally takes and clean up is a breeze.I will not give up my normal smoking, but I think this will replace a lot of my cooking on the grill as the results are reproducible, and timesaving.Built in temperature probe is essential. We also ordered some pellets from Kona on Amazon which are much less expensive than the Ninja pellets and give you more options. Actual individual wood like cherry and oak, rather than a blend. If there is a criticism about the Ninja, it is there expensive pellets, and lack of a variety. If you are a serious Griller then check out some of the other options.Overall this is a huge win, and a great addition to your cooking options.

    Impressive!

The media could not be loaded.

Set up was quick and easy. The directions don’t tell you where to install the drip pan and liner or the thermometer and probe, but it’s easy enough to figure out! This unit does not come with a stand, so I ordered one from a different brand that folds! The directions for cooking and using the unit are very impressive. For my first use, I ended up cooking trout on the bake setting at 350 degrees. The smoker feature was turned on as well. I will admit I started with the grill setting along with the smoker, but it was cooking faster than I wanted. I wanted as much smoke flavor as possible. In the end, it really turned out amazingly! My fish was quite flavorful and this unit was so quick and easy to use! I will be using this thing a LOT in the future! You get the flavor of barbeque without the charcoal and it has so many other uses/features! If you don’t mind cooking on foil and in foil containers, cleanup is FAST!

    My new favorite cooking toy!

I just received this a few days ago and have already cooked three times on this grill. It’s AMAZING!! My first item was a cheap frozen pizza (just to experiment) and it came out tasting wonderful! Didn’t burn and the smokey flavor was a nice surprise. Next up was a steak with some BBQ sauce. Again, the smoke added a whole new dimension to the flavor. Finally tried a roast with the included temperature probe. It tells you when the grill is warmed-up, when to add the meat, and when to let it rest. Takes all the guesswork out! It was done quickly and perfectly. The included instructions are great and helped me a lot. Looking forward to many more meals with this great grill!

    Great outdoor grill/air-fryer!

This is a great grill/air-fryer for families that like to enjoy the grill and have the experience but don’t want to go through the hassle of having a regular grill. With this, you can quickly make the grilled meat, and you don’t need to be an experienced person. It’s very easy to use and clean. I think it is a perfect size for small families and you can easily store it or move it since it is not very heavy. We tried it with chicken and fish, and both turned out to be very delicious. I really like it and highly recommend it!

    Interesting concept…

I’m an avid meat smoker, so I didn’t have super high expectations for this as far as smoking. I more wanted it for the quick grilling. That, it does well. It doesn’t quite replace having a conventional grill, in my opinion. But it does a good job of supplementing. One frustrating aspect is that so many accessories are needed to have this truly be an all in one replacement for a grill and light duty smoker. What I like this for mostly is taking it to bbqs and events where we would normally use charcoal. This makes the cooking so much quicker, easier, and cleaner. For that alone, it is worth it for us!Before you buy, just do your research and make sure this is truly what you want!

    A next level cooking

Although this is not my first Ninja product, it is my first Woodfire outdoors smoker/Air Fryer. I’ve used it three times so far and I’m extremely pleased with the results of what I’ve cooked. On the first time, I used the smoker mode to cook a whole chicken, baked potatoes, and sausages. The cooked food was amazing and ready to eat in about an hour and a half; I used some of the included All-Purpose Blend pellets, and the flavor was fantastic. I also used the smoker mode to prepare a beef brisket in the second time. The third time I made chicken wings, I used the Air Crisp mode, which is the same as the Air Fryer mode, and I got the most delicious chicken wings with a smoke flavor. This outdoor smoker, grill, and air fryer is extremely well-made, solid, and durable; I can’t believe I can add smoke flavor to my food now using an electric appliance. This Ninja XL model is an upgrade over the previous model, however I should point out that the upgrade was just in size, not in features. This model is larger than the previous one but has less modes; since it is a 4 in 1 appliance, but the size upgrade is very helpful for preparing large meals since I can easily fit two whole chickens and I believe I can fit a 20 pound turkey, but I have yet to try this. I’m lucky to have a close by GFCI outlet in my backyard; otherwise, I would have needed a long extension cord because the supplied power cord is just 2 to 3 feet long. Cleaning the pan and the smoker is easy; I rinsed and dried the pan and used a damp towel to clean the smoker. This smoker does not come with a stand, which I would have loved. I would have loved to see a griddle pan as well. It does, however, come with a probe with which I can set the desired temperature and it will notify me when the food is done. The included instruction book was not designed specifically for this model because every QR code I scanned in the book took me to a page where I had to download the mobile app, but this model does not have WiFi like the Woodfire Connect model. Aside from that, it’s a fantastic appliance that I’m sure I’ll be using for years to come, and I’ve been recommending it to my friends and family.

Very good alternative to regular grilling

This is NOT you’re regular charcoal or propane grill. It grills beautifully once you understand how it works. It grills FASTER than a regular grill, so always adjust your time! It DOES add a nice smoke flavor, but because cook time is faster you don’t get a true smoking experience. With that said, an easy fix is to sous vide some meat first. Most people won’t even know the difference because it’s still delicious. You CAN use other brands of wood pellets. In fact, I prefer other brands over the ninja ones. Sometimes, even with the ninja pellets, they don’t heat up evenly. It’s usually due to user error so make sure they are even. This thing is a beast and perfect for my huge family. I watch Salted Pepper on youtub for all my ninja needs and she covers this bad boy. Great buy, especially if you have a large family.

    Simplifies Smoking

Disclaimer: I have only used the smoking mode. This product makes smoking easy. Super simple process. Even the scoop is sized to perfectly grab the exact amount of pellets you need per session. It even comes with two bags that have enough pellets for about 3-4 sessions each. It only comes with one grease liner though but that is fine. It even has a thermometer too. Only thing I do not like is the claim that you can only use the Ninja brand liners and pellets with it. Big lie. I have had no issue using any other brand of pellet. I like how light it is and easy to move around too. Cleaning is also a breeze.

Ninja – OG850 Woodfire Pro XL Outdoor Grill & Smoker

We love the Ninja – OG850 Woodfire Pro XL Outdoor Grill & Smoker!! This is a heavy-duty multi-cooker but takes up very little space. It can sit on a tabletop (we sat it on our outdoor table to use it) but I think we might consider purchasing the grill stand that is sold separately. This would also be good for an apartment balcony, tailgating, camping or an RV since it is small (compared to a full-size grill). I really enjoy the versatility of being able to make a complete meal with one product. It comes with everything you need (except for food!) to get started. We grilled tuna steaks and air fried sweet potato fries and broccoli in less than an hour. I am looking forward to warmer weather so we can try smoking chickens on this. As others have said here, the cord is short but the way our outdoor outlets are we had to get an extension cord out anyway, so it isn’t an issue for us. SO many possibilities and Ninja makes great products!! We are very happy with our purchase!!

    I LOVE THIS SMOKER!

I’ve been using a small pellet tube with a gas grill to add smoke flavor into our grilled foods when I didn’t want to go to the trouble to set up our charcoal grill… So when I saw this I had to order it!I have not been disappointed! I’m actually using it right now as I type to cook a boneless turkey breast…The setup is was easy, the directions are clear to get it started. The first time I used it (the day it arrived) I kept it simple and grilled burgers with it as well as asparagus and cauliflower bits. The book does say, some foods absorb the smoky flavor from the pellets more than others. The asparagus and the cauliflower were significantly smokier than the burgers, but meat does take a long time to absorb smoke flavor anyway and burgers cook fast by comparison to a bigger piece of meat like a big chicken or turkey breast. So it wasn’t on the grill very long to soak up the goodness, it had a hint of smokiness and honestly it was perfect. They were delicious! The bigger cuts of solid muscle vs ground beef, cooks much slower and has more opportunity to take on the smoky goodness.I really like the electric ignition feature on the pellets, I always struggle with lighting them on my pellet tube in advance and keeping it going or keeping it from burning up too quick. This works just right!I’ve only used the robust pellets so far, and they make everything yummy, a little goes a long way so I haven’t had to refill it very much because everything I’ve made so far doesn’t take long to cook to need to replenish the pellet door often. I haven’t tried the other pouch of pellets or the other brand I already have for my pellet tube. I’m looking forward to a nice “low & slow” cook for a beef brisket I have in the freezer using the robust pellets.I absolutely LOVE this thing!

    Phenomenal grill. Worth every penny

And we haven’t even used all the features! We’ve only used this as a grill and it’s been amazing. My husband loves that it gets to temp quick, it takes up very little space, it’s straightforward, no fuss, super easy to clean, and it alerts him to when the food is finished cooking. And it’s accurate on that, every single time!We did hot dogs, burgers, steaks, chops, tons of meats on this grill and, for our three person family, there’s enough space to get all the meat done at once. For our party, it worked awesome to feed twenty lots of food, and got back to temp quickly. It has so many features. Every time we use it, we find a new ‘plus’ to add to this. We got a little grill cart for it and it’s become a staple for us already. We love grilling and this is just perfect. We have used this inside our carport, which is open on one end and has a half wall on the other, and is between the house and the shop and it didn’t get super smoky or anything. The price is excellent and this grill is high, high quality. It’s pretty much perfect and we’re looking forward to using it regularly. I’d definitely gift this. This gift tells a griller that you really love them, lol.

    Not your granddaddy’s BBQ

The media could not be loaded.

The Ninja 🥷 WoodFire Pro XL is part of the 2nd generation of the WoodFire product line. I didn’t own a 1st gen WoodFire grill, so I can’t speak to all the changes, other than this XL model is bigger (it’s still not very big by BBQ standards), and has less cooking modes (the original had 7 modes and this has 4).Included is a non-stick grill surface, an air crisp basket, temperature probe, 2 small bags of pellets, a grease tray and liner, a pellet scoop, and documentation. The build quality is pretty good and about what I’ve come to expect from Ninja. The base and handles are plastic, and the lid is cast aluminum. It features an intuitive digital control panel, a convection fan, an integrated temp probe port, and temp probe storage. It’s easy to use, simply plug it in, fill the pellet hopper, choose the mode temperature and cook time, then press ignite. Wait for it to preheat and display “add food”, then start cooking. In “grill” mode on the “Hi” temperature setting, I was able to heat the cooking surface to almost 560 degrees which is hot enough for searing (barely), and it heats pretty evenly. Most importantly, this is capable of producing great food in a variety of cooking styles (grill, smoke, bake, air fry, etc..). The grill will fit some large cuts, but not all. You could cook a whole chicken (even two), but maybe not a turkey (depending on size). You won’t fit a whole packers brisket or a full rack of ribs, but almost anything else should fit (roasts, pork shoulder/butt, ham, etc…). This even has a cold smoke feature (haven’t tried it), for cheeses, salmon, bacon, etc…The nonstick grill and air crisp basket are NOT dishwasher safe (which is disappointing). The cord is only about 2ft, so you will need to supply an appropriately rated extension cord. You cannot use abrasives to clean the nonstick surface and I would assume this also means you shouldn’t use metal utensils.According to Ninja you are only supposed to use their pellets which are extremely expensive by comparison. I could not tell any difference between their pellets and other brands I use, so I have to believe this is simply a marketing tactic to get people to buy their overpriced pellets.Overall, this a modern outdoor cooking gadget that is easy to use and produces great tasting food. It is particularly good for apartment dwellers, or anyone with limited space or living in a community with restrictions on BBQ fuel sources. That said, it could be better. I would have liked it to have a longer cord, dishwasher safe parts, and an included cover.

Perfect smaller grill and smoker! Very portable too!

We got this to use in a camper and a lake house, as well as home. It is great because it is so portable. We didn’t buy the extra stand for it we just put on picnic tables, or outdoor counters and use it like that. We have probably used this about 5 times now and it is just awesome. The smoker feature I didn’t expect much from but we have done ribs twice and they were amazing! If you want a nice all around cooker to take many different places I would highly recommend this!

works exactly as one would expect it to, no hidden construction or missing pieces. only thing was meat started to taste a little chemically? could be something that i did wrong during set up, but just make sure you go through all the proper steps.

    Easy to use

I thought this sounded like an expensive gimmick. We researched reviews. Even the leading consumer magazine raved about it. First use was a home run! A friend is a serious BBQ-er and he was impressed. Ours will sit covered on its stand out on a screened in deck, so our only question will be whether that limited exposure to the elements will affect it in the long run.

    We love this grill.

We weren’t sure what to expect when we got this grill, but we’re pretty happy with it.Pros – Large cooking areaEasy to useMultiple ways to cook – we really like the ability to smoke our meat. The built in thermometer comes in handy. One of the great perks is that it’s mostly easy to move and clean which means less chance of attracting critters if it’s not cleaned off well like a regular bbq.Cons -The cord really needs to be longer. Especially for people in apartments if you don’t have a plug on your patio you will have to run an extension cord from inside of the house. While it’s a nice item everything that makes it an ‘outdoor grill’ is basically something you have to buy separately.Overall, if you don’t have a grill or an air fryer this is probably a great purchase. If you already have a grill and an air fryer I’d take the same amount of money and buy yourself a smoker instead. Or if you’re in an apartment, condo, or a strict HOA situation and can’t have a real smoker this is a good alternative. It’s a fun appliance, but it’s definitely more appliance and less grill.

What a convenient way to get that smoked, BBQ flavor in your dish! No longer having to wait for the wood or charcoal to fire up before you start cooking. My adult kids all raving about how fast and flavorful the food cooks! This was a big hit for our Christmas celebration!!

    I love it – now!

There is definitely a learning curve to this appliance and my advice is don’t start with steaks or any expensive proteins! Stuff cooks WAY faster than you think and can turn a nice piece of chicken into a smoldering hockey puck in a heartbeat. Now that I’ve learned that lesson (a few times) I’ve come to really enjoy cooking with it. No more fussing with charcoal or running out of gas but with all the advantages of “set and forget” convenience with a smokey flavor. And cleanup is a BREEZE !

No smoker or grill is perfect. They all have their personality traits. I love using a Traeger but I could not justify the cost or size for my smaller cooking needs. Their mini smoker still weighs 60 lbs which is a lot to wrestle with.I wanted a smaller, balcony friendly, electric powered smoker with some smarter features so I wasn’t spending hours trying to figure out how to cook. This is where the Ninja XL came in. It had the feature set that I wanted and the size and weight that I think is the sweet spot.On my first couple of attempts at cooking on this I made some discoveries. The ambient thermometer is off by about 5-10º because it is in a place where it does not get blown by the convention fan. The temp you set your smoke to is off because there is a hot spot in the middle of the grill. As long as you adjust for this, you will get perfect smoke times. Using the included probe really helps with getting your internal meat temperature right, but trusting the ambient temperature thermometer means shortening your smoke time and making for tougher meat. I use a Meater Two Plus which has a method to calibrate, to get accurate smoking temperatures in the grill. The big trade off for me on having a grill plate and the overall weight is this plate is aluminum with a non-stick coating. I tried doing a sear on a 7 lbs tri-tip and round that the plate would lose it’s heat with that size of meat and it prevented me from getting a good maillard crust. I used a cast iron plate on my range inside and then put the tri-tip on to smoke it to perfection. You can probably sear smaller cuts, but for the bigger heavier pieces, this griddle does not have enough mass to keeping the temperature up for searing.A tip for smoking is depending on your humidity, pellets at 60% humidity and 80º temperatures outside will burn up completely in about an hour in the smoke box. If you want more smoke flavor, you can figure about an hour for a full box, 30 minutes for a half box etc. On some of my meat I like a heavier smoke flavor, so I would refill the box 2-3 times to achieve the right flavor.I’ve been asked about the short cord and it should be noted that this is a higher amperage appliance. The shorter the cord the safer the draw on it. If you need to extend, make sure you get a larger gauge extension cord as close to the shortest length you can run it.My last recommendation is because of the convection fan, the underside of the grill hood is a little more sensitive to oil and grease build up than a standard grill, so cleaning it after each use is a great idea. I could see the performance degrading after an awhile if you let the build up happen. If you are looking for a smart grill and smoker that fits your balcony, or smaller needs (a family of 2 or 3) this is about as close to perfection as you are going to get!

Nice upgrade to the OG700 series

My review is based on this model and my experience with the predecessor OG700 series. My model was the OG701 and the OG850 adds quite a bit of grill space – my complaint about the 701 was the relatively small for a household of 4. The 850 also adds a different air fryer basket, but the pellet box on the new model is much easier to access (it pulls out whereas the 701 has a lid that lifts up, making access a little awkward when it’s hot). The 850 also eliminates a couple controls – dehydrate, roast, and broil. I didn’t use those settings anyway, so not a factor for me but it seems odd they would ‘upgrade’ the machine by removing features. The included thermometer is a nice touch but I have not used it yet – it’s not for checking the meat temperature as you cook, it’s used to monitor to food temperature to trigger the end of the cook cycle.I use this more for the smoking feature, and have mostly smoked chicken breasts so far. Once I experimented a little, I finally have the perfect settings for boneless chicken (the recipe book with suggested settings is way off). Like any other smoker, I have to mist the chicken with water every so often, and flip it a few times to get a good even char. I also refill the pellets (they burn quick) a couple times as well, but use that opportunity to use different smoke pellet flavors. We also use this quite a bit as an air fryer when I’m grilling on the gas grill, that way we can do all our cooking outside on the deck and go straight from grill grate to plate and eat outside. The OG850 is a no brainer if you’re looking at the OG700 series … for a about 20% more you get noticeably more grill space, the built in thermometer, and improved pellet box access. I’ve included some side by side pictures to show the difference in grill grate size and the different basket, etc (the OG701 is on the right and the new OG850 is on the left).I did prefer the air fryer basket with the OG701 better (it was traditional solid metal versus the wire mesh basket that comes with the OG850). The stainless steel wire basket cleans easily in the dishwasher though, so not a huge defect in my opinion. The loss of 3 cook features (dehydrating, etc) is not really a loss because I never used them (and really have no reason to).The one standout feature is the Ninja website which includes a couple how to videos and a whole mess of recipes. The included guide book also has some recipes and a chart of recommended cook settings. I used the suggested settings for skin-on salmon and it was perfect, but like I mentioned the boneless chicken smoking settings were way off. Overall the Ninja OG850 is a big upgrade over the OG701, and I’d highly recommend it as a smoker for those that only need to smoke in small batches (plus it’s a lot easier to clean!) and as an add on cook surface/air fryer for regular outdoor cooking. We have ours on a kitchen card so I haven’t used any of the accessories like the mobile stand, etc.
