Tips on assembling the offset side door.

The media could not be loaded.

For earlier models, I can’t say if there was a design flaw but on this model, the hinge folds internally and screws to the offset box with the door open. It will fit perfectly and latch correctly. It doesn’t lay outward like other reviews show. Also, ALL bolts and screws should be attached by hand initially and barely tight to avoid cross-threading. Once things are in place and square for a section, then tighten with a screwdriver. A power driver may strip threads or warp the metal leading to cracked paint and finish failure upon burn-in. Hope this helps. Happy smoking!I will update after a few uses. I can see the possibility of having to apply grill seals in certain areas to prevent smoke loss.First use update:Followed burn in explicitly-lightly oiled interior, single layer of coals, temp not over 400°, two hours, then cool down. While waiting for charcoal to get ready in the chimney starter, realized the ash pan hangs from the bottom of the hanging charcoal grate, not clear in the instructions.First smoking update:Bacon wrapped shrimp cheese jalapeno poppers! Turned out great! One hour smoke with 15-20 briquets (6 in the offset with 2 chunks of pecan wood and 9 in the main pit), then 5 more to crisp up the bacon for a few minutes. Shrimp was juicy, bacon was crispy and smoky.Post use update:After cool down, removed ashes completely and wiped down grill inside and out. No rust or flaking paint and it was very humid!.Possibilities for why others are having this issue:Overheating the grill during burn in, leaving ashes in the pit (they absorb moisture from the air)The instructions say NEVER to let the grill exceed 400°. I would say If you do, make sure it’s for grilling or searing only with the lid open.Side note: Still considering grill seals or high temp caulk. Some smoke escape but still plenty to smoke with.Update 2:Smoked a brisket Thanksgiving weekend. Still no rust or flaking paint. Did an awesome 12 hr cook on it with a mix of pecan wood and briquettes. Will need to clean ashes out half way thru. They were keeping my fire from staying hot during the last half of cooking. Didn’t add grill seals, smoke flavoring is fine even with the excess leak. No complaints so far. Totally recommend an inserted thermometer. The included lid thermometer is about 50° higher than the temp an inch away from the meat. Each time, clean ashes out completely, wipe it clean and re-oil inside (at least till it’s seasoned good). Only issue was the dripping grease from the brisket drained to the outside right seam instead of the drip hole but that was most likely leveling and operator error. It has been well worth the small price it cost overall. I’d have spent more buying the brisket already smoked from a pit place and I can control the smoke, salt and flavor.Next project: baby back ribs and a smoked chicken for Christmas. Update following…Didn’t get to ribs until New Year’s day. Have my first sign of any rust. It’s on the door to the offset, where the most heat is. I’ve sanded it down and sprayed it with oil to hold till I have time to clean and cover with high heat grill paint. The main pit is still holding up great, no problems. Full rack of baby back ribs, smoked cabbage and cream cheese and my brisket boats for New Year prosperity and good luck!Update 2/28/23:Haven’t gotten around to repainting the area that has started to rust but after steel-wooling off rust and spraying with Pam oil, it hasn’t started rusting again.

    A GREAT budget charcoal grill

My old charcoal grill/offset smoker rusted really bad and it was time to get a new one. I found this one for a great price here on Amazon and bit the bullet. I have used it several times a week for months now and it’s still in great shape. It’s very durable and budget friendly. However, there is a negative with my grill. The top part of the shell was bent. As a result it would not close properly, leaving gaps between the top and bottom of the shell. This gap causes a lot of smoke and heat to escape. This can be fixed by getting a gasket by “LavaLok,” which can also be found here on Amazon.I still absolutely recommend this grill. For the price you can’t beat it. And the issue of smoke escaping can be fixed for very, very cheap.

Absolute Garbage – you don’t even “get what you pay for”.

First one arrived with the hood not even welded (see pic). It wasn’t cost efficient for Amazon to accept the return due to shipping cost so they said to keep it and sent me a replacement. Replacement was also defective. The legs on this one are incredibly wobbly and, as some other reviewers mentioned, not all the predrilled holes line up for assembly. It doesn’t help that some of the pieces are clearly different than the ones illustrated in the instructions.I say you get LESS than you pay for because you are better off just getting a no frills $50 charcoal grill. I can see why other reviewers complained about the seal on the smoker you can tell at a glance the assembly leaves the metal misaligned.Terrible. Avoid at all costs.Update – it is SO flimsy it literally blew over in light wind. Can’t weigh it down because the bottom shelf supports almost NO weight and the legs keep giving out. TOTAL garbage.

    Cheap, but Effective for Smoking

The grill is cheaply made, which I expected to a point. This is the first barrel grill I’ve purchased with the thin wire grates for grilling and that is disappointing. The ash pan is super flimsy, hard to empty, and falling apart after about a dozen uses. However, this is my first offset smoker and that part is really effective. I’ve done a brisket, ribs, and pork butt and controlling the temp was pretty easy. I use a mix of chunk charcoal and hickory mini-logs for smoking and they fit really well in the box. There is a lot of smoke loss, but that’s to be expected with a cheap unit. I have some sealer tape to apply to help limit that.TL;DR: Great for smoking meats, but less than satisfying for grilling.

    Good For the Money

DELIVERY: FIVE STARS. On time and quick.ASSEMBLY: THREE STARS. The usual “What IS that thing in the drawing?” moments. One or two disassemble / reassemble false-starts because the orientation of pieces is not always clear in the drawing. Pieces are not labeled, so you’re totally dependent on the drawings. But assembly is extremely easy and can be done in less than an hour with a Philips-head screwdriver. Extra points because they include extra hardware.DESIGN: THREE STARS. It’s a good basic unit, not chef’s quality by any stretch, but for the price well-designed. The ventilation system is not entirely intuitive and takes some fiddling to master, but you get there in the end. The smoker underachieves a bit. The warming rack has a design flaw in its raise-lower mechanism, and the rack falls down at inopportune moments: I improvised a fix, but this is the biggest engineering fail I’ve encountered in the unit. (Note: the instructions are particularly vague on the assembly of the warming rack, so I’ll go over that again.). There is no good handle with which to maneuver the unit. Does come with a decent canvas cover. Grates are thin (we prefer sturdier cast-iron), but they seem to conduct heat evenly. Metal is thin and light but durable against ordinary stress, and retains heat.PERFORMANCE: FOUR STARS. Again, not chef’s quality, but a very good unit for the money. Good heat retention; onboard thermometer is accurate and durable. I haven’t tried the smoker yet: but in the grillings I’ve done so far, there seems to be inadequate draw into the smoker: again, the ventilation isn’t entirely intuitive and takes some fiddling. But we’re pleased so far. Three stars if it were even thirty dollars more expensive, but at this price, this is a good unit.

    Buy Lavalock with this grill

It works great now, because we bought lavalock and sealed it. It was not lined up when we put it all together, so heat & smoke were leaking everywhere. Also there is a step in the instructions, towards the end, that is not explained well, & took forever to put together. Have patience & buy Lavalock with this grill. You will need it. We love the grill now. 👍

    WARNING!!! Do Not Buy

Nice looking pit for the price. Now my coals stay lit and I’m able to cook my meat better. The metal is a bit thin, but maybe the cover that came with it will protect it in bad weather. Only time will tell if it will hold up but for now It was a good deal.Update:The wheels started coming off. The top rack will not hold lots of meat so it bends and comes off. The cover faded white because of the sun. The bottom plate that holds the charcoal is starting to deteriorate after a few uses. The overall metal is so thin and flimsy that strong wind will eventually move it. This pit will not last a long time and I haven’t even had it a whole 2 months!Amazon only gives you a 30 day return window and will not help you with any warranty refund or replacement after that. They will say contact the manufacturer but for what?? Another pit! Lol….Save your money and buy a better pit from lowes or home depot for around the same price. Dont be like me and stay stuck with a cheap pit. Its really embarrassing having a bbq get together with a new pit that’s falling apart during cook outs. Oh, and I’ve been bbq’n for years and this is not worth it!!! What a waste!!!2nd Update:I managed to rig the pit to stay in use. However the cover is long gone and is hard to replace and find the right size. The cover that comes with it tore.and ripped into pieces because it became brittle and it catches on the pits sharp edges…..I dont not recommend. Spend the extra $40 on something made with better quality.

    Great grill for great price

We put this grill together in less than 40min. Instructions were pretty easy to read and we used a drill to tighten the screws. The cover is great by the way if you leave it outside. We grilled the next day and the food came out great no complaints! The only thing though is that it does peel but if you clean it well after every use this will def last. Looking forward to more bbqs this summer! Def get the right brushes and products to keep it clean so that i will last great buy!!!!

Entirely serviceable. Probably the most affordable option for a good reason.

The assembly for this grill is only minimally frustrating. It’s like IKEA except it uses those isometric exploded views where the rear legs in the image cross over the front legs in order to show you what’s going on, but it ends up looking like MC Escher. Most of the instructions are fairly straightforward, because there are ultimately a limited number of screws. Many of the screws thread into the parts they are meant to connect. It says you can do all of this without a drill. I disagree and I would encourage everyone to use at least an electric screwdriver if not something like a lil impact driver. The paint flaked on my first grillatory expedition, which involved just, you know, normal grill activity. A fun fact for you is that charcoal burns at around 2000°F. This grill’s finish, according to Royal Gourmet, is only warranted for 400°F. Given that many parts of a grill will always get much hotter than that, it’s easy to see how it’s possible that the finish would start flaking on the first grill-round. This is a major design and quality control issue.A little bit more grumbling about this specific topic: I’m not an expert on paint and coatings, but I do know that it’s possible to apply powder coating that can hold up to high temperature (factory-applied, not DIY). I also know that there are solvent-borne paints– like spray paints- that can be used in high-temperature applications. I have used the high-temperature ones and I have used the ultra-high-temperature ones. The former does not hold up to frequent grilling. The latter, fortunately, does! (I inherited another similar grill that was heavily rusted and have been able to test out this idea over multiple seasons).Royal Gourmet, for their part, are very responsive, if you consider the fact that they basically just want you to return your whole, assembled grill. Amazon does NOT want you to do this, because it’s very, very expensive for them to process a return for something as large as a grill. However, if you want to hold them accountable, I’d encourage you to just ask. If the finish doesn’t hold up, that seems to be a warrantable repair, yes?Overall, it gets the job done. It’s nice having a shelf thing in front AND on the side, plus multiple racks, including a warming/smoking rack but also the regular grilling surface. But there is a reason why it is this cheap. There are some ergonomic deficiencies, like the lack of a handle, so you have to pull it kind of awkwardly. As other reviews have stated, the one door part is quite clumsy. The door on the offset smoker compartment is also very clumsy and the hinges I’m pretty sure are gonna wear out real fast. I am unclear what kinds of toxic chemicals are transferring from the epoxy-coated grill tray/rack into my food, but it’s probably some sort of horrific endocrine disruptors. God bless America. But in the meantime, it’s getting the job done.

    Easy To Put Together

This grill has been a godsend! It was easy to put together. You will need to have 2 people to make the process easier. The only thing I’m not a fan of is the racks. You would need to use foil or buy cast iron racks which I’m gonna do. I used a lot of oil (avocado oil) to prevent the food from sticking and it kept sticking to the racks. The only downfall!

For the price you can’t beat this. It does the job. It does leak a bit a smoke, for the smokers out there but overall, it’s a great pit. I put it together myself. You don’t really need someone else but if you do have one then it’s even better! I do recommend it!

    Save your money

Although I am able to get good cooks on this grill, it is flimsy,. I had to reinforce it after assembly as it was not structurally sound. It leaks like a sieve, and gobbles up fuel. The temperature is difficult to control. When assembling it, one of the spot welded fixtures that functioned as a hinge for the lid fell off, and I had to fabricate another one. The included cover was for a grill and not the smoker as it had no accommodation for the smoke stack. There is no ash pan, so the fire box needs to be vacuumed out after every use. Definitely not worth buying

Use it at least once a week. Nice stable temperature control ability. Could be made of slightly thicker steel…but all in all…very nice. Love it!! Couldn’t do better for the price!! Smokes and grills like a champ! And mine coming with a cover for it is a super plus! If you keep it clean, and keep the rain and weather out…it’ll last you a good long time!! Recommended!!

    Looks, works good

I like this grill because it looks nice, and assembled easy due to having all the parts, bolts. I did find and watch an online video showing it being assembled so that helped me since I always have a difficult time with instructions. The grill works well…and actually I been only using the small smoker part to grill with since it works good for the smaller amounts that I grill. (Usually couple large ribe eye steaks or 2-4 large burgers. The grill shipped very quickly with no damage at all to the box or contents. The grill also comes with a durable cover

Fantastic and amazing for the money

First thing I did when I assembled was threw some charcoal in and made some New York strips and wings it was fantastic. Love how you can adjust the charcoal height and the smoker is connected. Used some wagyu beef tallow and made for an amazing dinner. This is the Perfect option for smoking meat but not wanting too smoky of food. Everyone in the family loved it, even the picky ones. Also have the tables on front and side is super handy. Table on right could be slightly larger but isn’t bad at all.

Easy to assemble and use, hard to clean

Arrived with small scratches in exterior paint. Since it was exterior I just cleaned up with high heat spray paint.Easy to assemble, good directions. Access door for offset didn’t close tightly and I had to add a few washers to the pin.Cooking is great, only complaint is that there is no back stop. I’ve lost a couple brats into the hood.Cleaning main area is fine, but the offset doesn’t have a removable pan for the ashes.Cover is decent quality.Overall for the price I can recommend, but it’s not perfect.

    It’s not bad

It took 40 minutes to assemble solo. The manual isn’t great so I can see how some people could get confused. Everything came packaged really well. No damages to the contents of the box. You’ll need a screw driver for 90% of the job.The metal is thin and there’s a lot of gaps between parts. No matter how I adjusted the angles of pieces, there would always be gaps somewhere. I read online that you can mod it and make it a very good grill but I’m not going to do that yet so I can only comment what it is out of the box. You could do worse for the price. It’s pretty “aight”. I’m a little worried about it’s longevity since it’s so thin and I’m leaving it in the backyard.

Ribs came out juicy .Works fine

For the price, is not a bad option, metal seems to be thinner than average, easy to put together, about 40 minutes. A shame that mine arrived damaged, but notice it when was already assembled.

    For the price, it’s amazing

You get what you pay for. There’s not a lot of square footage, the legs were not level to the ground, and the smoke box vent comes loose when the grill is hot. You need the smoke box vent to regulate temperature, so that’s not great. If your smoke box vent comes loose in the middle of a cook, open the vent door and wait for the screw to cool down enough to tighten it up. My word of advice.5/5 because you’re paying very little for the materials. I promise their profit margin can’t be 40%.

You get what you pay for

I own a Traeger 780 and never really had an Offset smoker so for the price I paid for this one it’s definitely worth the money and not a bad smoker for someone just getting started on smoking on an Offset smoker. I’ll probably get a lot better one after getting practice on this one. Think of it this way, you wouldn’t buy an expense car when you 1st start driving so you get something a lot cheaper to get your practice in and then buy the nice car you want. It was pretty easy to assemble, it could use a gasket around the lid because the smoke does get out from that area but not to bad.

    Nice grill for the price

After looking at expensive grills in the local Lowe’s store, we checked out Amazon. We found this grill and thought there was a reasonable price for it. It does take some time to put together, but the parts are well labelled and there’s a video you can watch to see how it’s put together if you need that. We have used the grill to cook fish and burgers so far. Both turned out very well.

Thin metal but still holds high heat

I do like it, I do enjoy it, it is cheap lolIt’s certainly thinner than anticipated so more fuel is needed (wood/charcoal) over a duration of extended time. Not really an issue in my personal opinion. Grilling multiple plus years natural fuels.Does help it cool down quicker too though, so maybe a safety aspect there? Maybe?Works well, as expected.Easy to assemble.Easy to control temp/smokeFun as hellDo recommendLots of grill space, easy to move grill grates, easy to start, maintain embers. All around seems legit. All grilling, bbq, temp gauging aspects seem to work after multiple intense grill sessions.Upper grill works great for warmer, stones, pans, etcSo yea, if you’re looking at it… You want it.. Just get it lol If ya chill; this should be worth it for sure.(Be sure to burn a few hot sessions before food as factory surfaces have things that really should be cleaned or burned off prior to cooking food. And to prevent any potential fowl flavors. Your welcome)Cheers Fam

Good grill for the occasional bbq

Our second offset barrel grill, this was a great value for us, as we only use one a few times a year. We can grill or smoke on it, and if we need extra room, we can even grill hot dogs or veggies on a smaller fire in the smoker section. Only gave four stars because it’s somewhat thinner weight material than our last one, so will need extra care protecting from rust. But, it DID come with a cover (I bought one, having somehow missed seeing that detail!). We’ll store it covered out of the weather and be sure to clean it well between uses, and it’ll be there whenever we get the urge to grill something!

    great design but thin metal

for the price this is a great beginner offset smoker. but requires lots of attention partially because of the thin metal construction. outside temperature will effect cooking temp more than a stronger build. I’ve been using this grill every week for about 3 months and the paint is holding up great. I also upgraded the smoker with some grill gasket. I think as long as you take good care (clean out fire box and keep covered) of the grill it will last.

    Great gift

I gave this grill as a Christmas gift. My granddaughter put it together and her significant other did the cooking. They loved the space they had for cooking.

    Honestly pretty great!

This thing is a hell of a good bargain. It’s a grill and a smoker, has a LOT of great features I was not expecting for this price, and even comes with a cover! You cannot find anything even remotely as nice as this in a department store…

Not too shabby. Just put it together right.

Just wanted to let everyone know that on the offset portion where they say the smoker door won’t shut, they have the hinge on wrong. I accidentally did this too but figured out pretty quickly it was due to not putting the hinge on properly. It is not a defect, it’s operator error. For the price it’s nice, I bought it for my son. He loves it. This is his first grill/smoker. I think it’s the right price point for what you get. A lot complaints on here are unjustified. Put it together right, season it, cover it and put it away when not in use. If it comes in a beat up box, that’s from shipping. Don’t blame Amazon or the manufacturer. If you want something with thicker metal, spend the $500 like I did on my Weber. All in all, not too shabby.

    cheap hardware buyer beware

the hardware is cheap and the screw brackets will warp after use. the frame does not line up when assembled and will allow a gap for air to seep in making it hard to regulate the heat.

    Good starter smoker…

Fairly easy to assemble, just need a second pair of hands in the first couple of steps and towards the end. As far as the functionality of it, definitely does what I need it to do, but is super temperamental with temp control. The vent door doesn’t close all the way so I can just leave the vent completely closed and it’ll get the air it needs for smoking. My biggest gripe is the thermometer, when using my digital thermometer, it reads an internal temp of 232, while the thermometer that came with the smoker was reading 300. Needle was jerking when I did the burn off, did it again when went to use the grill for the first time, so I broke out the old digital thermometer to see how accurate it was.

    Easy to assemble

Great grill for the money. I read some reviews saying it’s a grill that will only last a couple of years and if that’s true it’s well worth the money. It’s not a $900 grill, you get what you pay for. The grill cover is very well built and if you take care of this grill it should last for quite a few years. I grill 1 or 2 times a week all year round

I say, “over priced, over complicated, wobbly, pain to clean, pain to assemble, paper-weight grill”

It cooks meat, that is the best I can say. From a do it yourself kind of person:*overly complicated build, screws and overall alignment are an issue from start to finish, the lid does not seat properly and has to be manually bent back to fit or you can have a gap in the front of your grill.*foam and packing do not prevent rubbing in shipment and some surfaces show wear from being handled by packagers and shippers, light scratching will show.*useless features, drop in tray is useless and cumbersome, the hooks for the BBQ utensils fall off with ease if the upper clasp of the hooks are not bent to prevent this.*shows the slightest amount of dirt even when clean and covered.*cover doesn’t have a cut out for the chimney to the grill, so the weather cover sets awkwardly and weight of weather cover is all on that spot and will likely lead to tearing/ wear.*drop plate for charcoal has to be cleaned and then removed to clean underneath it. So, then you have to put back this overly complicated tray that falls apart easily with any kind of movement. It is designed to hold weight, but when weight is not on it, it becomes unstable and handles come off easily leading to frustration.*retains moisture even when covered and rusts easily. The edges along the rim where the lid meets frame hold moisture and have already begun rusting and require cleaning even when grill is not used. So, if you cover after cleaning it retains any moisture left over, but if you don’t cover right afterwards the paint finish shows every spec of dirt, water spot and dust debris that come into contact with it. So, it never looks clean no matter what you do.*the door clasp to the wood pit on the side comes open when cover is removed and door opens when this happens.*Cover gets stuck on wheels when rolled if you do not have the Velcro straps together before you roll it.I will take my cheap open top Weber any day, over this over priced, over complicated, wobbly, pain to clean, pain to assemble, paper-weight grill. I can’t believe this is such a highly rated grill.

    Charcoal grill

Used for the first time and it cooked as expected very good but when I went to cover it after cleaning up the cover did not have a place for the smoke stack so I had to remove it to cover. Why would they send out a grill with a cover that doesn’t work for an assembled grill. So if your thinking of ordering this make sure it shows a cover that include the smoke stack. Very disappointed because of that

    Great starter grill/ smoker.

After a bit of practice, I mastered control of the temp. I smoked a 22 POUND TURKEY on this baby. I used the small smoking chamber for my heat source (not the grill). I think this is key in being able to maintain proper heat. I placed the bird in the big chamber. Once my charcoal got white hot, I opened the vents ( side vent and top pipe vent) and the temp in the main chamber ( the big grill chamber) increased. I let it hit the desired temp, 220, and closed both vents. It stayed at 220 for two hours. I added 3-4 charcoal brickettes to maintain the heat as needed. As far as the quality of the unit, where it lacks in construction, is balanced by its features.
