Works and gets to temp well, but very cheaply made

This thing works though it has a small basket, enough for 2 servings typically. The main issue I have with this is that the lid of the entire unit will pop off while frying. This is messy and asinine. Get a different fryer, foe the cost I am sure there are some out there that don’t have cheap plastic lids that randomly pop off.

Never had a deep fryer before, this one seems good?

I’m a competent home cook but never owned a deep fryer before. We all know they are not particularly healthy and I was always worried about using one and having it stink up the house (and yes, it does). However, I finally broke down and bought this one after my kids really wanted to try making a couple things (onion rings and fry bread in particular). So not having anything to compare it to, here are my thoughts…GOOD:It feels reasonably well made and easy to use. The sides stay cool and it’s nice that you can raise the fryer basket out of the oil without opening the lid. It heats up quickly and seems to maintain the oil temperature pretty well. And I like that is disassembles for cleaning and that the entire oil bin can be removed for storage (in the freezer…I read that this was a good way to extend the life of fryer oil).BAD:It’s pretty small. Our first use was onion rings and we could only fit 2 at a time in the basket otherwise they just stuck together. Same goes for the donuts we made, 2 small donuts was all we could fit. I imagine that if I was making french fries for our family, it would probably take at least 2-3 batches to make enough for everyone and there is no way you could do a “blooming onion”…unless your onion was extremely tiny. It’s also a bit weird to clean…the basket and heating element/front panel all come out. But the heating element is particularly tricky to clean. Also, you get oil splatters all over the inside of the lid.OVERALL:I was right to avoid getting a deep fryer. They are just kind of messy and gross. On our first run, it instantly stunk up the house (even though I had it under our stove vent running full blast) so now I’m only using it outdoors or possibly in the garage. It’s gross to clean. And the oil gets so hot and takes so long to cool down that you have to basically let it cool off in the garage overnight before you can clean it. None of these complaints are a knock on this particular item though…just deep frying in general.

Compact size and very easy to remove oil

Like everything!!! I live in a condo and I set it on my balcony floor, to avoid setting the fire alarm, very sensitive. It fries fish, wings, sliced mushrooms, asparagus, peppers, cut potato chips SO WELL!! Food comes out less greasy than sautéed and deliciously crispy. I fry with organic olive oil which is great for your health and delicious!!! 💯 satisfaction

    Not really wowed by this

I like the frying bin is not a non stick surface so scratching is not an issue. I am not real sure about the accuracy of the heat dial. It seems like the oil is not as hot as it says it is. The supposed hanging basket feature is totally non existent. It barely hangs when empty, if you have something in it it just won’t hang at all. The edge of the frying bin is rolled and the “hooks” on the basket don’t engage very well. I am thing of bending them down a little more to see if that helps. Considering the price on this I am not really pleased.UPDATE: Bending the basket hanging hooks down keeps basket from not staying in hung position.

    works as advertised

The temperature control if fairly accurate. The temperature recovery is fairly fast. The basket could be a little larger. All in all it does a good job of deep frying. I have done chicken wings and Tempura shrimp.

    Poor Handle Design

OK. I don’t like to burned by 375° Cannola oil. It really friggin’ hurts and takes a long time to heal!!!The basket handle will NOT fit into to very small notches in the basket so it’s virtually impossible to lift your scalding HOT fried foods out of the oil without splashing the extremely HOT oil on yourself, the floor, countertop and any small children or pets that happen to be within 3-4 feet. The guys who engineered and the inspector who passed this device should be fired or at least made to use this defective appliance.Don’t recommend, but if you do buy it, don’t say “I didn’t warn you”….

10+ min to heat up is not fast!

This unit takes 10+ min. to heat up to 360 degrees. The sides are supposed to be cool, but I can’t touch them after cooking.Other than those problems this is a great unit. I enjoy using it clean-up is easy.

    Good Little Fryer for Beginners

In an effort to reduce the number of times I go to fast food restaurants to buy fries (and end up getting a full, greasy meal), I bought this little fryer. The deciding factor for this particular model is that it is encased in plastic, reducing the possibility of burning myself. I have never owned a fryer before, and the thought of actually getting this out of the cabinet to set up and use was so daunting that it stayed there for three months after I got it. Today, I decided I was brave enough to try it out.Set up was easy and straightforward. Wash components, thoroughly dry, reassemble. So far, so good.Cooking was simple, too: add oil, heat unit (easy to know when it is ready with the green indicator light), put the food in the basket, put basket in fryer, close the lid, gently drop the basket into the oil and let cook until the food is colored to your liking, drain a moment before opening lid, and turn food out of basket onto your preferred method of draining fried food. The booklet that come with the fryer recommends a paper towel lined colander. I prefer to use a baking sheet, lined with paper towel that has a metal cooling rack on top. Food seems to remain crispier that way. I cooked frozen steak fries and a few fish sticks today. Both turned out quite well! The cooking time of the steak fries was a few minutes longer than recommended on the package, but that’s not a big deal. Just something to remember the next time I cook them. And I didn’t burn myself even once! The bugaboo I found with this fryer, which is likely the same issue with most similar fryers, is the clean up after cooking. Waiting for the fryer and oil to cool completely, filtering the oil, putting it in storage containers, wiping as much oil as possible from all the different parts before washing them, drying them, and finally putting everything back together for storage. I will probably use this fryer less than twice a month, but given the nature of what it is, that is about all I should be using it.

    I like it but

It works great. But to fully emerge half the basket you have to overfill on the oil so that means the baskets bottom will still hang in the hot oil when your pulling food out. I don’t like that it doesn’t have an off switch. Just a temp switch. So you have to plug it in Everytime which wouldn’t be so bad if the plug on the fryers side didn’t fall out so easily. Other than that, it’s great. I use it all the time.

    Patience, Prudence

Traded one in that didn’t get hot enough. Got this one based on brand name and reviews. It still takes a bit of time to snap, crackle and pop but I am not in a business of making fried pork rinds. I do it for my granddaughters, who love the stuff. A little off-putting that the heating element is in direct contact with the oil, but it works. I’d still like one that goes to, like, 425 F, just for the time savings and the lack of grease absorption, but still, it works FAR better than the one I’d bought previously that wouldn’t get above 325 F. Yah, highly recommend for small quantity, home use.

So, it’s light weight, easy to use and hassle free. The pic that’s posted should tell it all. I ended up over cooking those nuggets. Surely, not the sharpest knife in the kitchen.. advise- keep the hatch open to see if you over cooked or not 😝. Thanks.

You must be extremely using this cooker, avoid it altogether.

Good points It heats up rapidly. It does fry your food very well.Problems : the basket is much too small three full size wing at a time. it took forever to fry six pounds of wings. The basket dos not reach far enough down into the oil, therefore you will need to turn our food over too fry on both sides. When the basket is submerged into the oil it is not steady it when to be moved all though the frying. It does ok when you are letting the food drain. Because the fry bowl is so swallow the oil spatters all over everything and I do mean every thing. I am still find spattered food on the counters and items five days after using this fryer. If you buy it please be very careful.GHD

Could use some minor improvements, but otherwise OK.

Overall I like this unit. But in all honestly I have nothing to compare it to, since this is the only deep fryer I’ve ever owned. There are two things that I do not like about it, though. It seems to me that 325 and 350 are pretty common temperatures. But the scale on this unit reads: 265, 300, 340 and 375. Leaving you to guess what you’ve set the temp at the high end of the scale. I plan to use a thermometer so I can mark the two temps I mentioned on the scale. And confirm how accurate it is.I say that because I’ve used this guy twice. Once for donuts, and the 2nd time for chicken The donuts were on the greasy side. Which may be an indicator the temp was too low. That could also be because I had to guess at temp setting I wanted. The other complaint I have is that the power cord is kept in place using a magnet on the back of the fryer. The fryer comes with a short cord, so if you happen to move it, the cord will disconnect easily. You will not notice it until you spot that the front power light is off. Which is what happened to me.Given the price I paid, and how often I’ll use it, I do believe it was a good purchase. I just need to tweak a few things to get used to using it.

    Not a very good product.

…Wow. For a $40 purchase, you’d think the thing would still function fine after more than 3 uses.Alright, first off, this thing does not fry evenly. I did beignets and fries in this fryer, never taking up much space in the already small basket. Too many things in there will make it so (maybe) half of the contents are fried. Anyhow, I had to flip the beignets, frying for 2 minutes when it should have been less than 1 minute, and do the fries for ~10 mins a cup or so at 375. For a “deep fryer,” you shouldn’t have to spend very long on it to fry a few things. It’s really annoying to have to go back several times just to make sure you fry everything and that you refry the underdone pieces of food. By the time you finish frying everything, it’s all cold.Next, the “Cool Touch” is absolutely pitiful. You can feel nearly all of the heat coming from the oil on both sides of the machine. I can’t see how that’s going to save anyone from burns, especially when they expect it to be cold instead of over 200 degrees. I don’t have a temperature gun, so I can’t tell you folks the exact temperature. All I know is that it is way too hot to hold your hand on for more than a few seconds (just enough time for your nerves to feel it?). I’d never leave this thing around children or any adult that’s unfamiliar with it.The paint on the lid rubbed off during the fryer’s third use. Now, mind you, I haven’t been anything but gentle with the machine. I let it cool after using it, unplugged it, left the lid open after use, etc. However, it seems to me like the heat is way too much for the plastic to handle. The paint shouldn’t be rubbing off like that, not so quickly. It doesn’t help that you need to push exactly where it’s at in order to close the lid. I was taking off paint just trying to check on my fries today. I have attached a photo showing how the paint came off.Speaking of the plastic not being able to handle the heat, I think the plastic may have already started to warp. I’m not sure if this is some kind of cleaning feature or not, but the lid almost completely came off while opening it. It seems to me like this may very well be a cleaning aspect of the item, but I included a photo for you to judge. From what I’ve read in the manual and seen online, you have to clean the heating element (which goes directly into the metal tub with the oil) separately, as it’s attached to the electrical part of the fryer. Now, I don’t think you’re supposed to get any water in there, so it seems rather troublesome to clean. All in all, I don’t think this is worth $40. I think people would be much better off just frying in a dutch oven or a regular pot. You can almost always get either of those for much less money. A dutch oven (cast iron) can only get better as you use it more, so that would probably be your best bet. It’s certainly a lot more versatile. A pot or a dutch oven would do just as well, if not better, than this electric deep fryer from Hamilton Beach.UPDATE 2/20/16: I just went to open the fryer after not having used it for almost 2 full months and, guess what, the lid no longer opens with the button. Likely because of plastic warping or something. I’m guessing it’s because of the thing that happened in the first photo? At any rate, this thing is now a piece of garbage, pure and simple. DO NOT BUY THIS FRYER.

    Worked good

I read the reviews before I bought it and was aware others had temperature problems. I just got done using it for the first time. I used peanut oil. When it said it was “ready” and I could smell the oil, I put a lodge thermometer into the oil. It registered 325 on the thermometer. I decided to give it go since it was turned up as high as it would go. Despite the temp on the thermometer, the french fries seemed fry as they normally would. I didn’t notice oil saturation into the fries from it being too cool. The fries came out great. The one thing that bothers me is the cord. I know why it is so short and I know why it is magnetic, but I had a fry daddy in the past the magnets were very strong on that cord… this cord… not so much… when I turned the unit on my counter a little bit for a better angle for me to work at it, the cord fell off and I had to reattach it and try to turn the unit again without cord popping off. Like I was only turning it a couple of inches.I love the shape of the fry basket. Would’ve liked a deeper unit to hold more oil and be able to fill the basket with more at a time.I hope this continues to work well.

    Supper small

It works but the cooking pan is very small. The unit it self is way to big for the amount you can actually cook. Maybe a single order of fries , fish 1 piece at a time is all it will hold. Not worth the price at all

    Would not Buy Again

I did not foresee, until I used the fryer, that the removable heating element (while designed to heat up faster) would not allow the basket to be fully submersed in the oil so the fries did not cook evenly. The basket sets at a tilted angle so the back of the basked is down in the oil while the front (near the handle) sticks up out of the oil. I would not buy this one again and am disappointed in the product.

Excellent performance. Cool Touch is a great safety feature. A minor nitpick or two…

I’ve only used it once so far but it I can already say it’s everything it claims to be. Works well and simply. I selected this brand based on reviews I read – it seemed that most people love their Hamilton Beach fryer no matter which model they got. I selected this model for the cool touch feature. There was a stainless unit that is probably a better shape for my space and is definitely better looking but when I zoomed in on the picture it had “hot surface” stamped into the sides. I figure the compromise in aesthetics is worth the cool touch feature’s idiot-proofing (at least first order idiot-proof).If I had any feedback fro the development people at HB it’d be: 1. An audible timer would’ve been a nice feature for this unit. There’s a lower cost HB unit with that feature, so I’m a bit puzzled at this. 2. I would’ve gladly paid a little more for a heavier gauge frying container. Even if we didn’t go for the heavier gauge metal, maybe roll the edges under a bit or finish them a little more thoroughly. It only comes into play during cleaning by hand but it does feel cheap when you wash the thing.Again I’ve so far only used it one time but very happy with the way my breakfast potatoes came out. Looking forward to making some sweet potato french fries in it with bbq burgers. In terms of performance, this is a major upgrade vs. my old method of trying to fry potatoes in a pan. I just had to eventually admit that I couldn’t get the temperature consistent enough that way. Although I’m against cluttering up my counter with kitchen electrics, I definitely deem this one to be worth the space it takes up.

The basket doesn’t hold a lot but it does very well at frying. I love how you can drop the basket with the lid closed so the grease doesn’t go everywhere. The cool touch sides are wonderful. The sides get warm but not hot.

    Excellent counter top fryer.

Can’t really complain. Fill it with oil, set your temp and fry away. It holds temperature well. The basket is well designed and easy to dunk or hang. the lid helps keep the mess down. And after you’re done it’s easy to breakdown and clean. If I had to complain. The magnetic power connection is a bit weak. But it’s also for safety so I’ll give that a pass.Recommend if you need a small countertop fryer.

What I like most is that I can use this indoors without my whole house smelling like grease. The filter in the lid seems to work very well! The oil temperature, though, is questionable for the highest 375 degrees. It takes a really long time to get fully heated, and the temperature light doesn’t seem to work correctly when at range. So far, my handheld temperature probe has not shown it to reach the top temperature at all. It does get hot enough, however, for the foods I have tried so far: chicken, chimichangas, poppers, and sopapillas. I like the size of the basket, as it provides plenty of room to use tools for turning items over. I limited my larger foods to a count of three and smaller foods to eight/ten. Fried foods are a treat, but not something we would eat daily, so it will take time to try more things. I think it is worth its cost so far. It is easy to take apart and clean. I would be more impressed if the temperature was more precise and the “ready” light worked better.

Great fryer – An auto off feature or timer will be something I consider on my next fryer

Efficient capacity: Holds 2 quarts of oil and about 6 cups of food.Quick heating: Ready in just 8 minutes and 15 seconds, reaching around 363-365°F.User-friendly design: Features power and ready lights, hinged lid for easy access and cleaning.Impressive performance: Cooks whole order of chicken wings in one batch, maintains steady frying temperature, and produces delicious, crispy food.Cool Touch feature: Sides register around 120-130°F, ensuring safe handling. An auto off feature or a timer would make this a perfect productOverall, the Hamilton Beach Cool Touch deep fryer delivers excellent performance, convenient features, and a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

Gets the job done , has some negatives though

I am solidly in the middle on this purchase. At the end of the day, it gets the job done so will probably keep it. It is pretty easy to clean because the front panel / heating element assembly just lifts out. The bad thing is it tends to want to lift out when you lift the basket while cooking also. The basket is on the small side, good for one or two people. The bad side is the overall unit is bigger than I thought, takes up a fair amount of space that we don’t really have. It has a window in the top. The bad thing is you can’t see a thing through it while in use. The power cord is kind of neat in that it is magnetic, just sort of pops on there. The bad thing is it is literally like a foot long, you have to set it pretty much right next to an outlet. It takes a little more oil than I thought (it has a min/max line) – I would say about 48 + oz or so. Since the heating element is exposed and just sits in the bottom of the oil pan, you have to fill it up or some of the food in the basket will be above the oil line. Even when the oil is full, if you have a little too much food in the basket some parts tend to be above the oil. I will probably try to fill it up just a little past the max line and see how that works. It has simple controls on the front panel, just has a dial for the temp and a red and green light, with the green light signifying the oil is at temp. It does a good job of heating the oil pretty quickly, however when you lower the food in it, drops back to red and seems to stay there quite some time while cooking. This may, however, be a common trait of these types of home fryers IDK. The end result is always nicely browned just like you would want. So, to me, it’s one of those purchases that while not perfect gets the job done, and the negatives outweigh the faults.

    Easy. Fun. Perfect for two.

This is the first time I’ve tried deep frying, and this little gadget has made it easy and fun (and safe). It’s a very well thought-out device, and keeps the mess contained within itself. It is pretty small. You can make a modest serving of fries for two people (one large potato’s worth), or about eight medium-sized fried shrimp, or four street taco-sized tortillas for little tostadas. We just take things out, drain them, then put them on a cooking sheet in the oven at 275 to hold until everything is done.I read a bunch of the other reviews before getting it, so I’ll answer some of the concerns I saw there.I can’t imagine how this would “leak.“ The oil is contained in a one piece steel tub with an enamel finish. The max fill line is maybe halfway up the side. Maybe if you put way too high-moisture much food in at one The oil could bubble over? But we never got near the top in normal use.The sides do get warm, but even though we used it for well over an hour they never got hot enough to burn us. I was able to very carefully move the fryer a few inches (not a good idea, but possible) while in use. There are little handles/indentations on the underside so that it’s easy to pick up (when it’s cool). We have not tried any truly goopy foods yet, like tempura, funnel cakes, or beer battered fish. But we have made breaded fish and shrimp, and have had no problem with those sticking to the basket. One grabbed on a little, but it was easy to dislodge it with the tongs without losing any of the breading.Yes, you can drop stuff directly into the oil. You don’t have to put it in the basket first and then lower the basket. Somehow that wasn’t clear to me at first, but it works just fine and the manual even recommends it for some foods. Put the basket in first, then gently set the food into the oil. When it’s done you can use the basket to lift it out.Do not overlook the possibility of making fresh tortilla chips! When we were done cooking dinner one night I dropped in some little corn tortillas Just wondering what fried tortillas would do. It wasn’t until I tried them that I realized (duh!) that I had made tortilla chips. They were excellent.I have been gluten-free for about 12 years, so there are things I have not had in ages, like fish and chips, or hush puppies. Now I can make them in a way that works for me.All in all, I’m very happy with this little appliance and hardly recommend it.

    I love this thing.

I’ve lived all over the world so I feel confident saying that we Americans sure love our fried food. But we don’t have deep fryers at home. After buying this, I find that so weird. Sure, you could heat a pan or pot of oil and risk burning yourself. But what will you do with the oil afterward? I always found that the biggest issue with frying at home. This little guy changes the game. When you are done and the oil is cooled down completely, you can either just cover the tank with plastic wrap and close the lid to make a seal or pour cooled-down oil into a big old red coffee container (you know the ones) and throw it in the freezer. The oil lasts such a long time, especially with the latter, without always having to dump it with guilt and/or wash 20 million dishes. The device is so easy to clean as well. Strain the cooled-down oil with a cheap coffee filter and/or fine mesh metal strainer(both for best results!) then scrub and dry the easily detached heating element and the removable tank and you are good to go as long as the oil is still good (and anyone with a working nose can tell when it’s not.) Oil is very forgiving as long as you don’t have specific food allergies. Not to mention that this fryer is crazy safe. It is designed to be turned off by pulling the plug from the wall outlet and has overheat shutoff protection. Even if you put something frozen in and it starts it bubble up at max heat, rest assured that it shuts off once it exceeds a certain heat limit. I accidentally tested one of the safety features when my gf made the mistake of pouring a small amount of water in it at max heat, and yes the house didn’t burn down hugely in part of the shut-off features and YES it still works. If you enjoy Japanese katsu, American fried chicken, Philippines lumpia, or even just straight-up french fries/ chips (which are the cheapest thing ever if you just buy your own potatoes!), this little fryer is the way to go.

    Just right for two people.

My brother lives with me and I do the cooking. A two-pound of tater tots, for example, is split exactly in half and they fill up the cooking basket right to the rim. They cook evenly and in a timely manner without waiting around or guessing if things are ready to go. When the tots are done, we divide them exactly in half and they make for one meal for both of us with no leftovers. That said, there is a “min” and “max” fill line stampings in the oil chamber that cannot be seen. The stamping should be deeper, or marked with contrasting paint, or both. The oil chamber doesn’t have handles and can be tricky to remove from the base unit to pour the oil back into the bottle. These two minor flaws prevent me from giving a five-star review, but four stars ain’t really shabby, ya dig?In sum — recommended for a one- or two-person household. Very handy.

One use, so far so good

First impression. Pros: all the parts are removable from base for cleaning. Cooking and draining can be done with lid closed. Works as expected. Cons: Basket is small allowing only 3 jumbo wings(1 layer as per manual) to cook at once. With the fryer ready light indicating up to temp, my temperature probe only read 260° when set at the max of 375°.

The screws in the handle are already rusting !!

I purchased mine in August of this year and it works great! My main objection is that they were too cheap to use a couple stainless screws to hold the plastic part on the stainless steel basket handle. The two metal screws that they used are rusting like crazy, as can be seen in the picture that I included. I guess the want me to try and find a couple stainless screws that fit.

    Small, but mighty

It was definitely easy to assemble. Compact, the sides are not cool to touch. Keep it close to a window or a vent to prevent the smoke from taking up your whole house. We turn ours on the highest setting per what we saw on a YouTube video. I wish the front would be more secure. It does come off super easy.

I bought this as used but like new. Everything was great except there was no manual with it. I am so use to getting a manual, but I can go on line and get it just as easy and less paper.

One of my most used cooking devices

When you don’t feel like wanting to cook up something in a pan or a bowl or whatever, I always adore how these deep fryers come in handy. I got one when I was a kid, but a Hamilton Beach deep fryer is one I plan to keep for a very long time. They’re usually of quality, and so far so good! I keep it around for whenever I don’t feel like spending time looking over the food I’m preparing on the stove. Its kind of a cheat code.

    We’re enjoying deep frying !

My husband wanted the Beyond Steak Tips to be crispy so I purchased this. We use it with light olive oil to make it healthier. Very easy to use, heats ip oil quickly and no splatter. We reuse a few times before cleaning.

Solid fryer. Easy to use. Easy to Clean.

Used this right away. Oil heated almost immediately. The basket works well, particularly the drainage hook on the handle. Cleaned up easily, and there was no external spatter with the cover closed.

small basket, large volume of oil.

It states 2 liters oil capacity but I had to use 2 1.5 liter bottles to have enough oil to fry in. And despite a capacity that would easily hold a full gallon of oil, the basket is remarkably small. I won’t return it but in retrospect would have gone with an old fashioned fryer.

    Great French Fries at Home

Love this fryer. I can finally have tasty, golden-browned, French fries at home. I decided to use safflower oil in my fryer because it has a high smoke point and less saturated fat than some alternatives. The fryer maintains a pretty constant temperature and is easy to clean and use. I like the fact that the lid is closed when frying, but I can still lift the basket to drain the food I am cooking.

The Truth is, Nothing beets a Cast Iron Dutch Oven for Frying

The idea of a deep fryer is nice but, the truth is, your old school cast iron is best. I know the right setting on my stove. I know how much grease/oil to use. Once the oil cools, with a funnel, i have a spill-less cleanup every time. The fryer is bulky. While the insert is removable, the outside of your fryer will need some cleaning with some Dawn or Fantastic. you have to wait on it to dry, the cord is short, you use WAY more oil, especially if you are not frying a lot ( I am single and fry about 4-5 large wings at a time). To me, it didnt come back up to heat after i dropped a few wings fast enough. i have a thermometer and watched this struggle a bit. it did rebound but… by then, my oil was at a low simmer.I decided to just use my cast iron dutch oven. the results are much better and i don’t care WHAT you tell me, deep fryers make your food have this ominous flavor/smee, likely because you heated that nonstick substance too high. I sent mine back after one use
