Fantastic Design Makes Up for the Mediocre Power

This is a quality product for the price range. I own several 20 volt BLACK+DECKER cordless yard tools and have been really happy with their performance so I bought this mower hoping the batteries were interchangeable. They are not. The batteries that come with this unit (2) are double the size and 40 volts. They take at least four hours to charge out of the box so make sure that is the first thing you do when you receive the package. Set up was ridiculously easy since the unit is shipped 90% assembled already. The shape is impressive and looks like a sleek RC race car except larger (it is the size of a typical mower). The handle to adjust the cutting height is large and easy to use which is good because you will need to start high and slowly work your way down to your desired cutting height (just like the instructions recommend). The unit is very light weight so it was a breeze to maneuver (My kids will be able to take over this chore much sooner)! One battery was able to handle my entire backyard which has a sizeable lawn. There was one area that has been taken over by Tall Fescue which was several inches high. I had to pass over this area at the highest cut-height setting (7) or the engine would quit. I then tried to lower the height to 4 but that was too dramatic a difference and the engine quit. I was able to make another complete pass at 5 before the battery was depleted. I have no doubt that with two batteries I will have no issues mowing my yard in the future. There is a convenient storage compartment on board for the spare battery which is awesome. The power and performance were honestly about a 3-4 range. I still gave it a 5 however because the design and weight or so great and I was able to push this mower with more ease than the self propelled walk behind gasoline mower I used previously.

Light weight – great power – two batteries – one charger

This mower exceeded my expectations for power and performance. I previously had a Worx mower that was over 8 years old with the large battery. it was heavy but got the job done until battery finally failed and no replacement. This B&D mower was a great replacement for my Worx. I took a hard look at another Worx, but their price to mower size just didn;t compare to this one on Amazon. The large blade and mower deck gets the job done. The single lever with multi height adjustment is awesome for getting the perfect mow height.A few quirks to mention, but I would still say this is a great mower.1. The plastic wheels squeak a little when I mow and turn. A little lubricant might solve that haven’t tried yet.2. It only comes with a single charger and two batteries, so if you deplete both batteries, you have to charge one, then swap and charge the other. if you forget to swap you are short a battery for next mow.3. Only one battery is active at a time. Not a big deal, but it isn’t that obvious from the pictures. The rear battery compartment is storage only, and you swap the front battery out when it is depleted and move the spare to the actual battery port on front. (This is good for me, as I currently get whole yard done on single battery. since it isn’t drawing from both batteries, I only need to charge one when done with mow)

    Batteries make this nearly useless

Needing a new lawn mower at the start of COVID, I didn’t want to shop in person, so purchased this. The mower itself is lightweight (not surprising, since it’s mostly plastic) and maneuverable. Granted it has been over 2 years since I assembled it, but my recollection is that it was straightforward to put together.Unfortunately, a major problem – and what brings my overall rating of this mower to just 1 star – is that the batteries don’t last long enough to do the job. My home sits on a quarter-acre lot with a house, shed, driveway, several trees and a garden. If the grass wasn’t overgrown, I could mow the yard in 45 minutes with my old corded mower. The description of this mower stated that just one of the two included batteries would last the amount of time I needed to complete cutting my yard’s grass. Unfortunately, this was never the case. The original two batteries combined have never lasted the 45 minutes that were promised for one battery. On top of that, only one charger was included, so only a single “round” of mowing could be done at a time. With a charging time of several hours, I often had to wait until the next day to resume mowing. After a couple months of frustration with the above situation I purchased new batteries and a second charger. When I made the purchase, I stuck with Black & Decker batteries. I verified that the voltage, amps, etc. were the same. The batteries also looked identical in the pictures I could see. Unfortunately, when the batteries arrived they were obviously not right for my mower, as the connectors were wrong.Last year I purchased another replacement battery and charger. This battery was stated to have twice the capacity (amp-hours) as the originals. Unfortunately, it also fails to last anywhere close to the 45 minutes (let alone the 90 minutes one would expect) I need to get the job done. At least I can get in two “rounds” of mowing now.Another frustration is that if the grass is overgrown and thick, the mower stalls quite easily. With the battery situation being what it is, this often happens as I need several days to mow my yard. The method I’ve adopted when dealing with this is to “pop a wheelie” with the mower: Where there is a small patch like this I will just lower the mower onto the patch. Where there is an extended stretch of such grass I mow over it multiple times in order to get it to the desired height. This can extend the time needed to cut the grass quite a lot. When I was younger it seemed that Black & Decker had a pretty good reputation. Unfortunately, this experience, a few others, and some things I’ve seen & heard from other sources, leads me to conclude that they no longer deserve that reputation. I certainly won’t be buying any more of their battery operated tools in the future.Update: At only three years old the starting mechanism failed. I tried to fix it myself, but found that beyond my skill. With the problems mentioned above, I wasn’t willing to put more money into having it repaired and bought a replacement from another manufacturer.

All the features I loved in the old one, with all the improvements I wanted.

I had an earlier model of this mower, which is why I purchased this one. After years of continuous use, it finally got to be time to replace. And I’m glad I did. The new one is lighter and easier to handle, but seems no less powerful, easily handling my lawn. Height adjustment is by a lever in easy reach and the height of the handlebar is also easy and precise to adjust. Not sure about the proprietary battery, but it seems to have lots of power, and on-board storage for the spare is a great idea. Also, there’s now a “power remaining” indicator, which the old mover lacked.I’ve used it once, and already I love it.Edit: The battery life is not as great as in the older model. Fortunately, they included an extra battery which more than enough for my modest surburban lawn. I notice that Amazon offers third-party batteries for this unit, which have a higher Amp-hour rating; I intent to get at least one of those just to be sure. Being a photographer, I’m well aware that many battery manufacturers offer high-guality replacement batteries for cameras, so I’m pretty confident in such batteries. If you have a large lawn, I would suggest getting one or more additional batteries to be sure you always have enough.

    Battery lasts about 20 minutes

The mower comes with 2 batteries, and I ended up buying 1 more (> $100)and a fast charger ($55). I have a pretty small yard – about an eighth of an acre – and it should take an hour and 45 minutes to cut all at once. The battery needs to be swapped out every 20 minutes, and it takes at least 2 hours to charge one with a fast charger (not included with mower!). So mowing my small lawn takes all day, even with 3 batteries and a fast charger. It is also hard to seat the battery on the mower and make the electrical connection. Much more difficult than the comparable B&D 19-inch mulching mower I replaced, which had a battery with 3 cells that lasted much longer than I needed to mow the whole yard. And the battery fit in the old mower much more easily. That said, the new mower is much lighter and more maneuverable than my 2 previous B&D mowers. In short, B&D needs to solve the battery problem with this model.

This is an effective lawnmower. Cut surprisingly well. Since I had multiple batteries from other black and Deckers i’m able to change them out.

    nice light weight mower

First of all I read all the reviews. Many of the reviewers did not read their instructions. I also read price compares. Consumer reports. and other reviews and I also have black and deckers weed eater, blower and chainsaw that use the same battery. I knew going in that the mower battery will not run long. any battery that runs constant will not run long. but if you let it rest you will get more run time out of it. I got 35 minutes run time out of two batteries the first time I mowed and I was able to finish my mowing. about 1/6th of an acre. I still had one light reserve power. and you must recharge your batteries asap do not let them stay discharged in your mower for a week or two and expect them to stand up. and one should not mow to low. and I do not use the bag catcher. I mulch. one should mulch and put the clippings back into the yard. been mowing for 65 years and I know what I am talking about. such a waste of money to even include a bag catcher I have not used one for 40 years or more.so any review that says something bad about a bag catcher is worthless. the mower spins fast and cuts very well it is the third highest mower in ratings on a youtube ratings group. yes the battery could use an upgrade but the mower is $200 to $300 less than the higher rated mowers. I have 5 batteries now from my other devices I can trade off when needed. works for me but that is the only reason I rate a 4 star. 2 batteries were included with my mower.

Worth Buying if you have a small to medium lawn and want to go green

This is not a great mower in my view, but I am still pleased with my purchase. The pros: Great to use a mower that is easier on the environment. Its much less noisy – you can use at odd hours without unduly disturbing the neighbors. At 20 inches, it cuts an adequate swath. Its good for small to medium sized yards. My yard is approximately 2,000 SF and the mower is adequate for the job. It comes with two batteries. Changing the cutting height is very easy. Cons: Its underpowered for tall or thick grass (mow your lawn regularly). I need to use both batteries to mow my medium sized lawn – one is never sufficient. (I do have a few trees and shrubs to mow around, which takes more time.) It took 2 months to receive after ordering – may have been an issue with 2021 supply chain constraints on many items. It was marginally difficult to assemble – would have been much easier with clearer directions. (I dislike having to go the the manufacturers website or You Tube. It should have clear directions with photos or diagrams in the box.) Bottom line – satisfied purchase but I will consider other brands when replacement is needed.

    All reviews are true

I just bought this lawn mower last week and used it for the first time yesterday. First, I had a Black and Decker CM1836 that I bought in 2014 and I never had any problems with until I ran over a sewer cap and it start smoking. I thought about getting it repaired, but talked to a lawn mower repair shop and they said that I had gotten my money’s worth. So I decided to buy another Black and Decker because I had such good luck with my last one, even though the repair shop suggested I go with a Kobalt. I decided on the CM 2043 because it had the edgemax design and that will save me some time trying to trim edges. However, I did not read the reviews close enough (which is unusual for me) to see that like everyone else I could not even cut my whole lawn without the battery dying. I have a small lawn, but decided to cut my neighbors lawn yesterday and it died before I finished. Good thing it comes with two batteries, but make sure you charge both before mowing. I also have the same criticism as others, the CM 2043, while lightweight does not feel as sturdy as my CM 1836. Also I quickly found that if your grass has grown little long it will stall out while cutting. So, I must say I’m somewhat disappointed with this lawn mower, but I’m going to keep it and just make sure both batteries are charged before I mow the lawn in a few weeks. I will say that it was very easy to assembly and fits very neatly in my small garage. I would suggest that if you looking for a new lawn mower check out the Kobalt cordless mowers.

    Perfect for me!

This mower may not work for everyone, but it is perfect for me, and I love it! Light weight enough that I could lift it easily enough if I had to. Runs like a charm over a great deal of uneven ground. It’s not really meant for such a large, rough property, it’s meant for a small suburban lawn, but I got the first one I had because I have some physical disabilities and I needed a mower that I could easily handle. I’m working on taming a lot of area. This little mower even takes on chunks of wood that I run over by mistake, and keeps on going. The only problem I ever have is that the batteries don’t last long enough, but I solved that by buying a couple more batteries. This mower is a replacement for the first one I purchased and I have no complaints. Definitely value for the money. I would recommend to anyone.

    Great Mower

I have owned this mower since the beginning of mowing season. I wanted to use it for a while with all the features to see if it held up. It Did! I’m so glad i purchased it. I have a corner lot with bermuda and a small piece of st. augustine. I also have the edger, blower and hedge trimmer. They all work off the same batteries and they all work great. It’s light weight and starts with a push of a button. My yard is not easy to mow. I have a 4 foot high ledge i must navigate in the front of the yard and an incline on the side of the yard. Because the mower is light, I walk along the ledge and push it up the incline with little effort.I was paying the “lawn guys” over a $1000 a year to mow my grass. I’m 65 years old and did not think i could handle a regular gas mower on my yard. But with this one, its a breeze. I get a good workout and a nice neat yard whenever it needs it. I don’t have to put up my dog, or be home to be sure they do everything and most importantly i no longer have to replace the sprinkler heads near as often since they are not getting broken anymore by the “lawn guys”.Also, I’m taking better care of my yard since i see it up close every week. I am now putting out pre-emergent and fertilizer. The bagger took a little patience to see how to get it hooked propertly, but now its great. Also, i read the issues about the batteries. I live in Texas and my garage can get boiling hot in the summer, so i keep the batteries in the house. The mower does have a plastic cover, so you can’t just bang it around, but i’m ok with that. This mower works great for me. I’m glad i bought it.

    Lawn mowing tool works

I have bought in to the Black and Decker product line – so have many batteries. I used five for my large lawn. The lawn mower is ridiculously light weight and easy to maneuver. It has large wheels to ease rolling and an easy to use mechanism to change cut height. Did a good job for my lawn (first mow of the season, dry grass, mostly tall weeds and short grass). It is reasonably quiet and did not “bog” down on the first cutting. I could see where it might in the future – so “extra” batteries are necessary for my lawn. It is worth it for me though. Easy to assemble – but the instructions were not great. I could have put it together without the instructions either way (although I may not have lined up the cables correctly).

A nice, light, cordless mower for a small yard

I chose this cordless mower because I had invested in 40V batteries for B&D leaf blower/vacuum and string trimmer. I use it in mulching mode and it does an excellent job of creating a clean, even cut and does not leave wheel ruts like my previous, heavier gas engine mower. It takes at least three, 3.5AH batteries to mow my yard. The two 2 AH batteries that come with the mover are essentially useless for mowing because of their short runtime. And the slow charger is a joke. I bought batteries and two fast chargers from other vendors that work much better. I had to remove the foot protector from the mower so I could turn it and pull it backward. I really like the lightness of the machine. Like the other B&D 40V tools, its design started with some good ideas, but then marketing ruined them. Overall, though, I’m satisfied with the mover, but wish B&D had tried a little harder to improve the design and shipped it with more powerful batteries and charger.

    Dream machine…almost.

Updated my review: After using the mower that I bought about a year ago (a little bit less) only 6 times or less, one of the rechargeable batteries is dead. A new battery will cost about a third of the price of the lawnmower. The running time of each fully charged battery, when they both worked, was about 15 minutes. The machine came with only one charger. The batteries took hours to charge. Thus, mowing my lawn was a 3-day job with this mower. I hired someone to mow my lawn most of last summer and this season because I don’t have that kind of time. That’s ridiculous–to own a lawn mower and have to hire someone to mow your lawn. Here’s my original review:The lawnmower runs like a dream. This is my fourth B&D electric lawnmower. They seem to last about 5 years before I break the blades, burn out the motor, or the like. The starter button stopped working on my last mower. Fixable? Very likely, but not by me.There are a couple of improvements over my last model. The grass cutting height adjustment lever is in a more reasonable place. It should stay in position until I choose to move it. Not so, in previous versions.Secondly, I like having an extra battery. Much appreciated. However, a few new things are irritating me. First, I had to hire someone to help me assemble the machine. I’d been able to handle the assembly myself with past models. The user’s manual was singularly unhelpful, and B&D’s customer service rep was trying to Google the answers I was seeking. Really? I’d already tried Google. It didn’t have the answers. Someone with decent intuition about how parts fit together could probably assemble this machine in less than 10 minutes. The rest of us have to find someone in that category or return the lawnmower.Secondly, I’m used to leaving the battery in the mower, and charging it while it’s in place. That doesn’t happen here. Because the battery is difficult to position properly, having to remove the battery after each use to recharge it and then replace it may be enough of a buzzkill to make me hate the mower. We’ll see. I’m dinging it 2 stars for this reason. Maybe I’m being too hard on it. Maybe it gets easier to position the battery with experience. It probably does. But I hate the fact that I’ll have to find out for myself.

Lasted 1 year and Black and decker wont replace it

Initially I was very happy with the mower. After 11 months the batts seem to not last as long. One day it would not start at all. I tried recharging the batts, re inserting the safety key etc.May of 2021……It would not start. Black and decker wanted me to drive it to a location 40 min away. I currently don’t have a car. They then said I should box it up and mail it to them. I obviously don’t have a box that large. Who stores a lawn mower box for 11 months? i borrowed a friends car and dropped it off for service. They said it would take 2 weeks to even look at it. A month later it’s done and they mail it back to me. I turn it on and the mower vibrates like crazy and then stops working. I flip it over and see only 1 out of 3 bolts are installed holding the motor on. It wont run so I call B&D again. They say to mail it to them and they will replace it. I now have a box but again no car to take it to a drop off location and they wont pay for pick up. I found a ups driver in the street and got him to take it. It arrived 3 days later at black and decker. A week later I call them and they say they don’t have one in stock and will ship one out in a week. A week later I call and they say they are shipping a replacement. 2 weeks later I still have no mower. I call them and they say they don’t have one in stock and never shipped it. They then try to get me to take a corded mower to replace it. I told them i have a big lawn so a corded model wont work. Its now been 3 months and I still don’t have a mover. At this point i bought a junky 50 dollar mower off craigslist since they have not replaced it in 3 months.October 2021: They now say they will issue a check in the amount of the purchase price. Unfortunately the mower now cost more then when I bought it. But at least its something. 2 weeks later i still have no check. They say they don’t know how long the accounting department will take. They said it could take up to 2 months with nothing they could do.March 2022: Still no refund of replacement mower. I’m contacting them again. I need to buy a new mower for this year since they have not replaced it.

    A toy lawn mower

I mow the grass on our very small city lot.My old mower:Purchased December 2, 2009. Black and Decker 24-Volt, 19-inch rechargeable, mulching lawnmower CMM1200 $365.00I loved and would have never parted with this workhorse mower, except that Black & Decker stopped making the charger (mine finally failed), and the internal 24-Volt battery was discontinued as well.New mower:Purchased April 19, 2018. BLACK+DECKER CM2043C 40V Max Lithium Mower, 20″ $299.00Mulching, bagging and side discharge of grass clippings. Two 40V max Lithium ion batteries “are included for twice the runtime”.There is a big clue in this statement. Twice how many _minutes_ runtime? How many batteries can you juggle?I gave this mower two months to prove its worth. Every time I use this mower, one phrase will not leave my mind . . . “a toy lawn mower.” Under weight, under powered, short life/weak batteries. I have to go over most of the lawn twice, occasionally three, times at two/three different height settings. With one charger provided and the recharging of three batteries (I bought an extra) mowing my lawn takes two days. With the necessary extra battery or two, the mower really costs considerably more than the list price. With three batteries, my mower doesn’t come close to what my old 24-Volt 19 inch rechargeable Black & Decker could do. I tried the “mulching” settings with the 40V Lithium and I think I’ll be raking and paper bagging or composting before I spend the time and batteries that mulching will take. The fatal weakness of the 40V B&D system is the battery. I really need four batteries to do the same grass cutting job as my old 24 Volt B&D. One charger in provided. 5-6 hours per charge per battery. The batteries are very temperature sensitive. The batteries will not recharge until cooled down after use. Each three-and-a-half pound battery’s plastic case, is just waiting to be dropped and break on the sidewalk or basement floor. The mower itself holds one operational battery, and one extra. It’s very inconvenient carrying around necessary batteries, then pulling them on and off the charger for a day.Black and Decker should not have put this mower on the market. It soured me on what I thought was a respectable brand. Why on earth did they drop the 24-Volt internal rechargeable battery system.

It’s a nice mower, but this is the second one now that produces an uneven cut.

2nd Update: Amazon sent me a second mower. This one also produces an uneven cut. I have contacted Black and Decker to see what can be done about it.Update: After seeing that one side of the mower’s cut is higher than the other…and trying to ignore it…I decided to take some measurements. First, I measure the distance of the mower deck to the garage floor, and found that the measurements were the same. The problem is not with the wheels or the mower deck.I laid the mower on it’s side and took some measurements, from one side to another and found that the blade is not true with the mower deck. One side is lower than the other, which produces the uneven cut. Whether that means a warped blade or something else, I don’t know. But you can see from the attached images there is a definite difference.I have a week left in Amazon’s 30 day return policy. If Black and Decker doesn’t respond to this post, I will be sending it back in for a new one.Lots to like about this mower. I had a good push mower, but as I age it was getting harder for me to push it (8″ wheels) and maintain it. So I decided to give this a try. Extremely happy with the results.Pros: Lightweight, easy to push and move around. Blade height adjustment mechanism is pure genius. All mowers should use something like this. Power is good, and speed of blade automatically adjusts as the going gets easier or tougher. Battery life is good. I mowed my yard with one battery, then tested it on my neighbor’s yard as he lets his grass get higher. Setting on 3, mowed his yard with one battery too. There will be NO oil changes, buying and storing gas with this mower. ELECTRIC START. On-board storage for the second battery.Cons: I haven’t found one yet. It remains to be seen how the long term performance will be. But for right now, I am 100% happy with the purchase.

May be alright for very small yards only.

I bought this unit to do my part in helping the environment. The mower works fine as long as the grass is completely dry and you only want to trim about a half an inch off the grass. The two batteries that came with the mower are 2.0 ah and last 8 to 12 minutes in the above conditions. I also purchased two 3.0 ah batteries which last 12 to 15 minutes. My problem(s) with the mower is that I have a yard that is a bit under a half an acre. The grass doesn’t completely dry out until the middle of the afternoon if at all. When I mow, I trim 3/4 to 1 inch off he grass so the batteries have a much shorter life. And the mower often bogs down. The 2.0 ah batteries last 5-6 minutes and the 3.0 last 8 or 9 minutes. Using all four batteries, I can get a quarter to a third of the yard mowed before I need to recharge the batteries. It takes around 40 minutes for the batteries to cool down before I can even start recharging. With the charger provided, it takes 4 hours to recharge 1 battery. I purchased a quick charger but this still takes 2 hours to charge each battery. So, using both chargers it takes about 7 hours to get enough power to run the mower for another half hour before I have to repeat the process. I will suffer through this year using this mower but I will most likely scrap it and get a gas powered mower for next year. If I wasn’t retired and on a fixed income, I would have already done it.

Easy to put together and use, but its meant for small small lawns.

As the title states, this product is meant for small small lawns. Easy to put together and easy to use. It comes with two batteries that need charged. I just got this thing yesterday, and went through the first battery charge in about 30mins. Went from 3 bars of charge to 0 while I was mowing the minimal lawn I do have. Wouldn’t recommend just based off the poor battery life.

keep on top of the mowing every few days to get your money’s worth out of the batteries.

We love this lawn mower but it certainly isn’t perfect. It’s super quiet and light weight. Thankfully we also purchased extra batteries and a rapid charger because even though we have a small yard we easily go through 3 fully charged batteries justto do the front and sides: especially if it has been a wet week and the grass has shot up rapidly. If you are unable to mow your lawn and keep it mowed every 4 to 5 days to keep it super short the grass length will bog down and wear out the battery in mere minutes. That being said our standard lot takes 6 complete battery charges to mow which is not what i expected… but at least we no longer come inside smelling like gas & oil

    Good for Small Areas

The power of the mower is similar to that of a gasoline model of similar size. The mower is very light, easily transported, and highly maneuverable. The only drawback seems to be the amount of time it takes to fully charge the battery for use.Additionally would seem if you have any long or difficult grass the battery life is greatly reduced. After 2 weeks away it took 3 fully charged batteries to mow only 750 square feet of Broadleaf Fescue. Overall this is a great buy if you have a smaller area you have to mow.

    This is a beast

This is a beast that eats grass and weeds like there’s no tomorrow. We have a penned in area that’s not easy to get to and easily forgotten about. Needless to say the grass and weeds had gotten out of control and grew very tall. I got this and once assembled and charged the battery I began what I thought was going to be a very long process. But this little gem took it on with gusto. I pushed it into the tall weeds and grass and it chewed it up like it was eating a salad for lunch and kept going for more.Unfortunately I can only give it 5 stars when it clearly deserves 10.

Very simple to operate with the height adjustment very easy from low to high

Assembly of the mower was fairly simple, it took about 20 minutes which included taking it out of the box. Very simple to operate with the height adjustment very easy from low to high. It is an excellent mower for trimming, which I did by it for. I would have given it 5 stars, but the batteries they included were not the best for this mower. Two batteries included where the 2.0 AH strength, and they should have been the 2.5 Ah for added run time. The charger also has a lot to be desired. It is a cheap piece of junk I have other Black and Decker tools which use the same batteries, I have the better batteries and their fast charger which works very well. All in all it is a well built mower, but do recommend the better battery and charger. Gives an excellent cut for smaller areas.

    Great mower, terrible batteries.

I love the mower. It’s lightweight, quiet, sturdy and easy to use. The included batteries are not good. This is my 2nd mowing season and while I hit 15 min per battery last year, I’m now getting less than 10 minutes per battery this season. Also know, the battery takes 3-4 times as long to cool off for charging, then 3-4 times as long to charge – than the minutes you get from a charge. I have 2 other 40v B&D batteries, same age purchased separately, and am having the exact same issue… less than 10 min per battery. I also bought an off brand 2.5amp that I get almost 20 minutes from – same age/use as original B&D batteries. – also same price. Overall, I love the mower, but count on getting off-brand (better) batteries so you have a positive experience with the mower.

    A pleasure to use

I thought for quite a long time about buying a cordless electric lawnmower. I owned a corded electric one many years ago and disliked having to deal with the cord as well as the possibility of getting electrocuted. I am so happy with this new cordless mower. It is very lightweight and easy to push around. The battery power lasts a decent amount of time, and it delivers a very clean cut. After mowing I take the battery out to recharge, flip the mower on its side and it is very easy to scoop the clippings out with a glove. Then I squirt it out with the hose so it’s ready for the next mowing. A very good, well-built product for a decent price.

Fantastic electric mower, really weak batteries.

I’ve had this mower for about 2 months now, and it does a GREAT job cutting my lawn. The problem is the 2 small batteries that come with it. The charge for each battery lasts ONLY about 20 minutes, so I have to literally RUN around my yard to get it done before the charge ends in both batteries. The first time I mowed my lawn, I had the trim level down to 3 I believe, and I could NOT finish my entire lawn with the two batteries. The next time I mowed my lawn, I raised the trim level up one notch, and then I was able to mow my entire lawn. Again, I HAVE to RUN with the mower though, or I don’t think I could finish my lawn. If it were not for the low-charge batteries, I would absolutely give this five stars.

Great mower, but could use a little more battery life.

Works great. It’s light and easy to maneuver. The 2AH batteries don’t last long enough to complete my yard. The extra battery would be more useful if it were paralleled with the in-use one so that you wouldn’t need to stop and replaced it. Still, it takes 4 batteries to mow my yard. Not a big deal, they’re easy to change. Just be aware. It’s a good idea to order a couple of extras. I ordered 2 of the 3AH batteries on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R6HD6HM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It doesn’t look like B&D makes a 3AH battery. These are an aftermarket brand. They also work in my B&D weed-eater and my B&D hedge-trimmer and can be charged on the battery chargers that came with the mower, hedge-trimmer and weed-eater.

It works but how do you open the compartment for the spare battery?

I have a lot of power tools including Black & Decker weed wacker and blower. I thought I would try the Black & Decker lawn mower powered by batteries only. It comes with 2 40 volt batteries as you probably already surmised. It does cut the grass adequately and is easy to push around and maneuverable. Of course it’s much quieter than a gas-powered lawn mower. It is not courted so you don’t need to worry about wires. Just charge the batteries in between cuttings! On my lawn that usually takes 2 charges. I have to use both batteries. The batteries are easy to switch out. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to store extra battery in the compartment on the lawn mower. I can’t even get that compartment open! So I just put the second battery on a table on my porch. That way when I need it I just switch it out from there. I sure would like to know how to unlock the compartment for storing the extra battery! That part remains a total mystery to me! It’s my only complaint!

    Poor battery life

I had a small yard in the city of Boston. I owned the prior model from 2012 and it was fantastic. They’ve clearly cheapened these. It takes both batteries to mow a lawn roughly 2,900 square feet. The prior model could mow it 2+ times on a single charge. Too late to return. The prior model last 10yrs. I give this one 5 yrs as a guess. Nobody makes good long lasting equipment anymore. Everything is throw away. I’d rather pay 2x as much for American made quality.

Gets the job done with regular schedule

Works fine as long as grass is not too long or too think. If it is then it cuts off multiple jobs and drains battery quickly so that you only get 15-20 minutes of work before you need to switch batteries. I have good sized back yard and I have found that as long as I don’t let it get long and eventually get rid of the moss and other weeds making areas thicker than other it does exactly what I need it to do with about 3-4 battery changes. I will update once I’ve fixed the yard and no longer have to deal with mossy areas. Still a good purchase in the long run regarding money and environmental aspect.

Took half the time as my electric mower and almost got the whole yard with one battery. I live in a trailer park so it’s not a huge yard but it’s big enough. Blade mows all the way out to the sides so there’s not much weed eating.

Broke Down After Only 1 Month

I’m so angry right now. I bought a Black & Decker cordless lawnmower in May off Amazon. It worked fine at first, but when I tried to mow last Saturday, it wouldn’t start. I had 2 fully charged batteries, but neither worked. I know it’s not the batteries, because they worked in my hedge trimmer. Of course, I was 2 days beyond the Amazon 30-day return window. So I had to contact Black & Decker for warranty repair. They sent me a shipping label, and I let them know I didn’t have a box big enough for the mower. The email response indicated “UPS can give you one” – I assumed that meant it was covered in the return. UPS said I had to pay $80 for the box (they actually had to make one big enough), so I called Black & Decker right after, assuming they would reimburse me. NOPE! The reason I got Black & Decker is because I have a bunch of other B&D tools, and want to share the batteries. I told them I’m a long-time customer and let them know all the B&D tools that I have,. I said I couldn’t believe they’re going to lose a good customer over $80 – especially when I had to return a piece of equipment that shouldn’t be breaking down in barely a month! They couldn’t care less. I will never buy another B&D item again,

Impressed with this mower after 2 years

I’ve had this mower for two years. In that time I have added 2 more batteries to my line-up as I have the matching trimmer, leaf blower, and hedge trimmer. I mow once a week, my front lawn take 1.5 batteries, the second battery is also used to trim and blow the clippings. The mower is nearly silent, just a low hum, I can have a conversation with someone while the mower is on. The adjustable deck is great, easy to operate with one hand, very light weight and gets very close to the edges of my garden boarders. The back lawn is over 0.5 acres, but this thing will get through it with the 4 total batteries I have. If you think that the battery this came with is all you’ll need, you will be sorely mistaken. Just like any battery powered machine, the battery does get used, and needs to be recharged.I also highly recommend buying a second charger, for the batteries. Lithium Ion batteries are made to either be discharging, by use, or charging. If left out of either of these states, the battery will slowly discharge and if it ever gets to a 0% charge the battery will fail and no longer hold a “good” charge.Best mower I have had in a long time.

    SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIVE STARS

This is a well designed, strong, high end, competitively priced and well built Cordless Lawn Mower. The electronic Li Ion batteries have plenty of juice to spare after mowing my front lawn. Why Black + Decker decided to include a dinky little, slow battery charger for the 40V MAX I will never understand. That being said, after reading the reviews, but before buying this fantastic machine, I also bought the larger and very fast charging full size 40Vdc MAX battery charger. I am very impressed. This has made my life so much easier. Had this larger, faster battery charger been included with the 40V MAX Cordless Lawn Mower I bought, this would be an irrefutable five star review!

    Quiet and efficient

I really like this mower because its quiet and light weight and easy to use. It’s very efficient while the battery lasts. Adjusting the height is also super easy. The only reason I dont give this a five star review is because I’d prefer the batteries to last longer. I can’t get my front and back yard done with just the two, so I’ll be needing to buy more batteries if I want to mow both in one go (which are not that large, so if you have a large property you will definitely want to buy extra batteries.) Batteries take about 4 hours to fully charge and there is a bit of a wait after you take it out of the mower to plug it in due to the battery being to hot from being used to charge. But over all great product so far otherwise and can live with the battery life, as I knew to expect the battery life to not last as long as a take of fuel. Would still recommend.

Good for small lawns, not so much for larger ones.

It makes a nice clean cut. However, beware, if your grass is a little high it will bog down and stall out. The electric drive motor needs a bit more power. The good: my lawn is not much larger than a living room! That’s why I bought this, I have the b&d srting trimmer that uses the same battery. This eliminated the need for storing gas.The Bad: The aforementioned lawn usually uses both supplied batteries if the grass is more than an inch above the normal mow height. Meaning, if I normally keep it at 3 inches and let it go more than a few days the mower will bog down and stall out. I have to then set the height to the next longer setting and cut twice. The Ugly: so after a month or so, I’m not completely satisfied with this. If the motor were just a little more powerful and the battery lasted just 5 minutes longer it would be perfect for me.Conclusion: if you have a really small lawn like I do then this is just ok. If you have a law.n that is 100’ x100’ or larger and let the grass go a couple days longer you will not be well served with this mower.

Good Mower – batteries are a weak point

I want to love my 2-month old mower, but the 40-volt batteries are the weak point. The mower does a fine job on fescue, clover, and crabgrass, even when wet. It is not “over powered” by any means but it holds its own so I can walk at a normal speed on the lawn. The fully charged batteries last 10 – 12 minutes each. The 2 batteries that came with it don’t allow me to do the small front and rear lawns. I called B&D customer service and they sent a slightly higher capacity battery which lasts about 15 minutes. Thank you B&D. The mower itself is mostly plastic, but well designed and easy to use and adjust I have a total of 5 40-volt batteries (I also have a weed trimmer and a leaf blower) which allows me to cut the front & rear lawns in one shift. Hopefully B&D will come out with better capacity batteries. Again, a very good experience with B&D,s customer service.

Great mower … but plan to invest in a better charger

Our new house has a small yard so for a while I had been using a manual push mower for a while, but finally decided I need something that would give a more consistent cut. For those of us who don’t like keeping gas cans around, this mower is perfect for that kind of small job. If I had a large yard I might look at something with more runtime. That said, the batter charger itself was disappointing. Fortunately I already had previously purchased a couple of B&D 40v tools so I already had one of the older rapid chargers. The charger that came with the mower takes several hours to charge a battery pack, but if I use the one that came with my 40v string trimmer it only takes a couple of hours. If I didn’t already have a better charger I’d be looking to upgrade.

Get the job done RIGHT! For a fraction of the competition…

I have a commercial snapper mower. That thing is built like a tank, and I really like it. So why did I buy this? Well l needed some more batteries for my 40v tool (trimmer, sweeper, hedger, and chainsaw) all great tools, and I get 2 new batteries with this mower; the math worked out for me.Well with all that being said, I like this mower. I use it to cut my front yard, since it’s all grass and don’t have to worry about tree limbs. It’s super light and it leaves my lawn looking great. I still use my snapper for my back yard. But I’m at least a little bit glad I am reducing the carbon footprint for one third of my yard. With 2 batteries I can mow my front yard, edge my sidewalks and driveway, do the trimming, and sweep up with the blower.I’ll admit, I’d of never gone with Black and Decker if not for the affordability of the hedger tool (First tool I got from Black and Decker). I now have a whole toolset, and they have worked wonderfully for my household needs (the chainsaw is awesome as well). As an independent observer, this is great for my home use (1/3 if any acre of which one third of that is my front yard; and for me the price and quality is undeniable). But I have seen stellar reviews for some of the competitors, and if you need that bit more of performance, do your research.Hence this review is from a satisfied customer of using it for 2 month, who thinks this is a fun and more than capable Mower option. But if I would not already had the black and Decker batteries and tools wouldn’t have even given this mower the time or day. I’m glad Black and Decker are building a quality product…,

    Cuts grass well

This is the second of these mowers that I have owned. The first lasted 3 full years before it would no longer start. The battery housing in the mower is not the best…but works. The battery connections to the mower do not always work well and they ultimately failed in my first mower after 4 cutting seasons. Battery life is fair and it will take both batteries to cut third of a acre lot with ease. I had extra batteries from previous purchase and also have additional batteries from my Black and decker 40v blower and trimmer. In general I would recommend especially if you are using other 40v equipment. The batteries that come with Black and decker tools are good but off brand replacement batteries are only fair and don’t seam to last.

Great mower! Get/use the fast charger though

The media could not be loaded.

So happy to finally get away from gas powered landscaping tools. I picked up the B&D 40V string trimmer and blower at this time last year. The pair came with one battery and a fast charger. Impressed by the power, I figured I should get the mower.Assembly was done in minutes without tools. The battery takes a good shove to seat fully. I can mow my 10,000sqft yard, trim, and blow with the three batteries. The charger included with the mower is a cell phone power adapter with an end that slides onto the batteries. It is hilariously slow. Using the fast charger from the trimmer blower combo, all three batteries can be charged back up in about two to three hours including cool down time (running the mower heats them up and the charger will wait until cooled to start charging) and swapping each battery onto the charger. On height setting 5, each battery gives about 20 minutes of runtime, more or less depending on grass height and motor load. Mulching and bagging work well and I don’t think I’ll be using the side discharge unless the grass gets way too tall. Height adjustments are effortless.More batteries can be had from amazon or ebay for about $30 each (LBX2040). The fast charger is around $60 and absolutely necessary in my eyes (LCS40).The mower handle is height and length adjustable. Super easy to push and maneuver even one handed.I came back to edit and add, the bagger is the perfect size to fit into the top of a yardbag for dumping. The bag has a handle on the back and it makes emptying easy. I’ve since picked up two more off-brand but compatible batteries. They were advertised to contain 3.0 Amp hours (stock is 2.0Ah) and I can say for sure I’m getting about 10 minutes more runtime out of them than stock! Hoping I won’t have to break out the riding lawn mower at all this season.

    I love this mower!

I bought this little cordless for my front yard, which is really small. I’ve had a cordless black and decker before, so I kind of knew what to expect, but it really exceeded that for me. It’s much more powerful than my conventional plug in electric mower, and the maneuverability is far superior. With it set on a 3″ height I could easily turn it with one hand, and the large rear wheels make getting it up the steps to the porch where it’s stored a real breeze. Don’t get me wrong, certain corners where cut to get the weight off, the wheels are large & plastic and look like a toy’s on steroids, but as long as it gets the job done I just don’t care. My yard’s about 20′ x 30′ without the sidewalk, and I did it with one battery, in half the time it would have taken the electric mower. When I took the battery out it was dead, but you wouldn’t have know it from the way it mowed, there was literally no die off of power at the end, like my old cordless had. All in all I’m really happy with it, and I really want to go out & mow it again! My weedeater also uses these batteries, and my electric bike, so a no brainer for me.

Pretty good mower, but has some glitches.

I will start by saying that previous to this mower I owned the Black and Decker CM1836, a 36V cordless mower that used three small lead acid batteries for power.I decided to get this mower because the batteries needed to be replaced on the old one.I find that this mower is very light, but actually seems to be a little flimsy. Time will tell. The handle folds down easily. The cover over the battery that powers the mower can be a bit difficult to get open. The grass catcher requires a special touch to get it to attach securely to the mower. The design on the CM1836 was much better. The batteries in the CM1836 combined for 10,000 milliamps. By contrast this mower is sold with 2-2,000 milliamp batteries which can only be used one at a time. I am still able to mow my lawn without changing batteries as long as the grass is not too wet or too tall. I mow with the mower at the lowest setting. My lawn is appx. 800 sq. ft.Bottom line, the mower is powerful and easy to maneuver, but will need extra batteries if you have a large yard. I like it, but it’s not perfect.

Not As Powerful As Gas, But A Much Cleaner Option

I’ve owned a battery powered lawn mower from Black & Decker in the past, the

    Black & Decker CM1936

and found it underpowered and clunky. Now with lithium batteries, the new generation of mowers is a lot more powerful and a lot less clunky. At first, when I got the mower out of the box it looked a little like a life sized toy mower. The wheels are plastic and the mower is very light. This mower, however, punches much heavier than I expected. It has a nice sharp blade and does a good job mowing through regular grass. With slightly wetter grass it struggles more than a gas mower and it chews through its battery faster. It uses a standard battery size from Black & Decker which also fits the chainsaw we own.I found that with the 2 batteries provided I was able to completely mow my 1/4 acre lawn, but I do dig into that second battery, so keeping after them both to be fully charged is important. What you sacrifice in power, you do get back with less noise and no emissions. It’s nice to mow and not deal with clouds of exhaust.I like the fact that the mower is light, but I think sturdier wheels and a little less plasticky feel would have made this a better mower. It’s still a nice jump in battery tech, and a solid mower.

Not as good as the older product

I got exactly the same product years ago which finally reached its end-of-life. The same model, same features (40v cordless)…to make the long story short, I was extremely happy with it until the very end. That made be decide to buy it again…I never expect these products to live more than 5 years but my older one lasted that long…even iof it lasted for only 3 years, I would still be happy about it. I use the same batteries with my B&D lawn care tools (blower, hedge trimmer, weed whacker, chain saw) so I have plenty of batteries. It never bothered me to replace batteries every 20 minutes of mowing since I have plenty of batteries. The construction is pretty much the same as the original one BUT…THESE are what I do not like about this new one compared to my dead original: the battery charger that came with it is a SLOW charger, not the FAST charger. I was disappointed that I thought I will now have a second fast charger…but NO, I have a second cheap charger instead. The batteries that came with it are 2.0Ah batteries while the original one came with 2.5Ah batteries which allowed me more cutting time. The handles do not seem as sturdy as the original one and there were no cushions on the handle bar. The hubcaps on the wheels are loose, so I just removed them (they are only of cosmetic value anyway). I think I will miss the old one very much.

    Convenience

I have cut my lawn twice with this mower. My lawn is roughly 80x120ft in the back and half that out front. I can cut the back on two batteries recharge as I use them and get the rest later. I love the convenience of no gas. It’s quieter and so lightweight it almost feels like a toy. I’m 67. I wanted a self propelled mower but this mower is so easy to push. So far so good 👍

    Does the job

This mower does the job. My lot is 50×150, with a house and garage taking up about 1/3rd of it. I am able to get the lawn done with the two batteries provided. I am satisfied with the result. What I am not happy about is that the batteries need to be replaced less than two years after my purchase.

Many benefits vs a gas mower.

Loved getting rid of my gas powered mower for this replacement. No more chasing non-ethanol gas for the mower, and the noise when using it. Granted this mower does make noise when cutting but only half as much. I have about 1500 sq feet of grass to cut and one battery does the trick. only once did I need the second battery. Use it in the mulching capacity, which also doesn’t leave bunches of grass along the edge of the mower. Really like the ability to raise and lower the height in one motion w/o messing with each wheel. My main complaint is….the mower does not cut evenly when pushing and pulling on adjacent cuts. Pulling the mower does not cut as evenly as pushing it. To get an even cut on the yard I have to push, turn 180, push, and so on. Not doing this has the appearance of not cutting every other row. A secondary issue is push handle is too long. There should be an adjustment for shortening it as I do not need the grass catcher. I feel like I’m driving from the back seat of the car with this long handle.Don’t get me wrong, I like this mower…..and will continue to use it. Just saying.

Black and Decker 40v cordless lawn mower front left wheel was broken

I purchased this product one and 10 months ago, but the front left wheel was broken. I think the bolt which fastened the wheel was broken, so the wheel and another part were released. And the other complaint about this is whener I use this product, it suddenly stops, especially, going up a hill, not a hill but a little bit upper part of my garden. I have to turn it on again so many times while mowing. If I use this in a dense grass part, it turns off right away, then I turn it on and have to lift front part of this mower and start again. So, It takes so much time to cut my grass in my small garden almost for two years. Finally, the front left wheel was broken. I am too disappointed with this product. Furthermore, the battery does not last long, only 9 minutes after using only a few months , so I purchased another three batteries.

It runs like a breeze for my wife, I am a Disabled Vet.

Cutting 3 areas of yard grass that had grown to a very high length due to our old one breaking 4 months earlier. Now my wife has cut the lawn a second time just to keep up because it is so easy with this mower. She loves it. It starts easy, and runs smooth!ThanksSteve and Cathy

    100% Honest Review

Honestly, my first impression was that this was going to be too weak but it actually does a pretty good job (Battery life is about 10 minutes each). I had not mowed my side yard yet this year and the grass was seriously tall, 2 feet in some places with some crab grass clumps. This really went to town on the highest setting mowing the grass. The only draw back is the batteries only lasted about 10-15 minutes each and I think really more like 10 minutes but in those 10 minutes it knocked down some really tall grass with little struggle. I think with about 4-5 batteries this could do my whole .4 acres. The other major draw back is the charger, it does take awhile, 4-5 hours to charge each battery. But I have a rapid charger (90 minutes each) I got with the 40V Black and Decker Weed Eater I also bought off Amazon.I like the fact it does a great job, No Oil or Gas to have to remember to get, No pull starting or waiting for the mower to warm up, It is really light weight and it is pretty quiet.I was mowing at 7am and had no worries about disturbing any sleeping neighbors.I still give this a 5 star rating because the battery issue is really due to the size a yard someone has and the grass height they are trying to cut. The mower it’s self is pretty good.

    Good mower, but…

I recently got my second mower of this model. The first was great, ran for years with no problems in a rough setting. I finally beat it to death, used for mulching on a rocky, wooded lot. Got my new one, assembled it, and it wouldn’t run. The safety cable would not allow the motor to start, even with the button depressed and the handle pulled tightly to the bar. I could force the mower to run by pulling added tension on the cable. A week or so later, the mower appears to run normally. Not sure what happened. But, a good mower when it runs. I called B&D and reported the cable problem. Both B&D and Amazon were VERY helpful; Amazon offered to replace it at no cost. We are Prime, and use Amazon constantly. Great store.
