What is science-led nutrition?

Nutrition inspired by science — not trends — creates differences you can see, feel and trust. Our food scientists understand the combinations of nutrients and ingredients to help support lifelong health.

How much should I feed my pet?

Most Science Diet foods have a feeding guide on the package to help you determine the proper amount for your pet. It’s critical to your pet’s health that his or her physical condition be monitored regularly and the feeding amount adjusted as needed.

How can I tell if an unopened can or bag of cat or dog food is still good?

The datecode on our plastic bags is located on the left gusset, near the 4 or 5-digit SKU number, toward the bottom of the bag. The datecode on our medium and large bags will be located on the top of the bag, generally the front flap.

How should I store my cat or dog’s dry food?

Bags of dry Science Diet, Healthy Advantage and Prescription Diet cat or dog food should be stored in a cool, dry environment under 100°F (38°C).

Amazon has that this product has “no refund or replacement” policy.

We love this product, however, the bag of food has cut/slice in it. Looks like a “box cutter'” may have accidentally cut it during packing or warehouse. Not sure when it happen, so wondering about the freshness.

    Amazing stuff

I changed my cats food to this hills science brand and it’s been over a week now that she has not gotten sick ,I fed her quite a bit of other brands out there and she would get sick on every one of them ,so far so good I’m crossing my fingers that it stays that way✔️

    NOT RETURNABLE!

Be forewarned, this food has lots of fillers that are fattening for cats, and cannot be returned once purchased, even if package is unopened.

Helped my cat not vomit as much

Got an old cat. She apparently loves to throw up that she makes it an olympic sport…10 points for getting it on carpets w/o stain protectant. But in all seriousness, she seemed to be throwing up more and poor thing was losing weight. I know she likes wet food but she’s a grazer and never eats it all and i believe it was irritating her stomach. I tried other wet foods but with no luck, she would either turn her head up or throw it up. I finally gave up and tried this food based on the revews and Hills was the first brand that she was on as a kitten, hoping it would work. Well she vomits less and seems to like it. Even though she likes wet food i know she prefers to graze on crunchy food. And the result is she throws up much less (about 1x per week vs. Every day). And plus it costs less than getting so much of the canned food. She has also gained about 1/2 lb. It’s only been about 3 weeks but I’m hopeful.

    Worth the higher price

My cats fur has become extremely soft , their skin has improved a great deal. They no longer scratch as much. They all have stopped vomiting too. I’m very impressed with the quality of this food and the results. It’s definitely worth the higher price. I highly recommend it.

Quality for my peace of mind; tasty for them

I prefer this brand, Science Diet, because I know it’s quality food. Not the crummy stuff you find at the grocery store. I buy this flavor because it’s the cats favorite. I haven’t noticed a difference with their skin or the amount of hairballs since we switched but I do know they enjoy it which makes me happy. Also, my two love the size of this kibble compared to some of the other ScienceDiet options. This kibble is small and bite-sized so the cats don’t fight with it like they do some larger cat foods.Even the stray cat I’ve been feeding and trying to catch loves it!Good food. Wish it was cheaper but gotta do whats best for the cats. (:

    Works well for itchy cat

I was in search for something, anything to relieve my cat and her crazy itching. She scratched herself bloody and bald in some areas. I had her on the instinct brand of cat food. I first switched from Hills science diet when I got her home from the ASPCA . And every 6 weeks or so, I noticed a new bald spot. This went on for a while and I started searching for supplements and was not successful, she wouldn’t eat it. Then I finally i figured it was the food and decided to switch her back to Hills. I came across this healthy skin food and thought why not and it works! I haven’t seen not one bald spot since I switched her and she loves the chicken flavor. I even get her the wet food. It’s all expensive but worth it.

    After years of searching….

Years ago we adopted a stray female cat who was pregnant. She had three little boys, and although we did find a forever home for one of them, we couldn’t find homes for the other two so we kept them (and their mother). These two kittens looked the same (Tabby), yet were like night & day.One always weighed more than the other and was a darker red-orange than his brother and never had any health issues growing up. The other, however, always had digestive issues (would gobble his food, then get sick, or have very soft stool). He was always thinner, but very energetic. We figured he could be allergic to something in his food (canned & dry) so we tried many different foods over the years. I even took him to the vet around the age of three to see if they could find anything specific, like IBS. They could not.The best we found that gave him the least amount of problems several years ago was Purina One Sensitive System dry food, which he did pretty well on for years….his symptoms weren’t as bad. The other cats liked it too. But about two or three years ago (?) the recipe may have changed because he and the rest of the cats no longer liked the food and the name changed to Sensitive Skin & Stomach.About that time the whole “Grain-Free” craze went wild, so we started trying our cats on various grain-free foods. Now our vet is telling us to avoid grain-free….that it isn’t good for cats. Oiy!So, we again started trying different brands and flavors and finally landed on Hill’s Science Diet Dry Cat Food, Adult, Sensitive Stomach & Skin after finally getting a diagnosis for our cat. He has a type of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with a thicker intestinal wall or “loops” as our vet calls it (a biopsy showed no cancer). In addition to an anti-inflammatory, our vet had us try Science Diet ZD (canned), which our cat really liked for several weeks, and occasionally will eat it now. Our vet didn’t have the Z/D dry the day I was there, so I checked Amazon and found this Hill’s Science Diet Dry Cat Food, Adult, Sensitive Stomach & Skin two months ago. It seemed to have an optimal balance of carbs to protein so I decided to try it. It arrived the next day.All four cats really like this food, to the point that we’re quite shocked. They still eat canned food twice a day (Like Fancy Feast, Purina Beyond, Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin canned), but we keep two dishes of the dry food available for in between canned meals.I just ordered our third 7 pound bag (we go through one 7 pound bag per month for four cats).P.S. The way I test how well they like various food is to put three or four different brands/flavors out in different dishes and monitor which foods disappear and which do not (& who is eating the food). I’ll replace the untouched foods with a different one, keeping track all along, even revisiting a previously passed-up food. This Science Diet Sensitive and been the consistent favorite for the past two months.Note: The 7-pound bag has a Velcro® enclosure that is not airtight, so be sure to secure the bag…..after rolling down the closed bag opening, put a couple of bag clips to hold it closed….we always use the black and silver binder clips for everything…way cheaper than “bag clips”

For the amount I think the price was a little bit high but I was desperate to get some food seems to be OK. I just started it but does need to be adjusted in price for the amount you get.

    My cats love it!

I have 2 cats, both nearly a year old. I had been feeding them the Hills Science Diet Indoor Kitten chicken flavor dry food since the day I adopted them. One of my cats has a very sensitive stomach and after her most recent vomiting spree, I had to look for other food options for her sensitive stomach. I did some research online and read reviews from other people about the Hills Science Diet Sensitive Stomach and Skin and decided to give it a try.My cats both immediately loved it! I noticed they would actually pick out the new kibble over their old kitten kibble, so the transition to the sensitive stomach food went way more smoothly and quickly than I had expected. It has been nearly a month since I swapped them over to the Sensitive Stomach and Skin formula dry food, and my sensitive cat has not had any vomiting or tummy issues.I got the chicken flavor bag because my cats prefer chicken, but I did notice there is also a seafood flavor available (in case your kitty prefers seafood). The food is a bit pricey but I feel that the quality of the food, and because my cats love it, makes it worth the money. The bigger bag costs a couple dollars less per pound than the smaller bag, so I put the big bag on my Amazon subscription list.I included a photo with my review to help provide a visual comparison of the kibble. The left side is what I was feeding my cats previously (Hills Science Diet Indoor Kitten) and the right side is the Hills Science Diet Sensitive Stomach and Skin dry food.

Great for my senior and FIV positive cat

This food has worked wonders for my little guy! As he’s often sick or just dealing with old age, he’s struggled a lot with multiple dry foods over the last few years but this food has been easy to digest and easy on his stomach (alongside his medications too). He loves it and although it’s more expensive then what I’m used to, the benefits make it all worth it! It’s my second time rebuying and it came within two days of placing my order. Very happy with this product!:)

Every brand wishes they had the rep of science diet. My cat has a sensitive tum and this was probably one of the better response to hard food. However quality matches prices. Little expensive but still its mother fudgin science 🧪

This is my favorite brand of food for my sensitive skinned kitty. She can be picky and not a big fan of the healthier catfood brands, yet this Hills Science Diet Chicken and Rice formal for sensitivity has her begging for her breakfast every morning and keeps her body running regular.

Since I began feeding my cats this dry cat food their health has improved.

I had taken my Siamese cat to the vet twice because she was passing bright red blood in her stool. The vet could find no reason for her passing blood. Since I’ve fed her Hill’s Science Diet, she’s had no more problems. My tabby cat has stopped vomiting also. I never realized what other companies used in making cat food until I took time to read the details which listed cheap unhealthy products. Hill’s Science Diet Cat Food is so much better for cats!!!

Sensitive Stomach Control – Check, Hairballs Eliminated – Check

My 4 year old cat (a Domestic Shorthair that looks like a russian blue) has an incredibly sensitive stomach. Despite being low in shedding, she is constantly coughing up hair balls or vomiting up her food. A part of it was how fast she was eating, and so we reduced the amount of food she was getting, but still she was constantly getting sick.We tried limited ingredient foods, and grain free, but none would keep her stomach in check for more than a couple of weeks. Her issues always came back. Eventually, her vet recommended we try this science diet sensitive stomach, and it has been an absolute miracle. We don’t have a cat getting sick anymore on a daily basis, or nearly as many hairballs (now its once in a blue moon). She has gained back weight (she actually went in the opposite direction and became overweight, which was something we were warned about ahead of time). We were used to feeding her more food since she didn’t always keep it down and kept feeding her the same amount every day – which ended up causing her to gain weight, so we had to cut back. Otherwise, she is happy, thriving, and no longer suffering from her stomach issues. She has been on this food for 6 months now, and I am happy to say that my cat is thriving again! The odor is minimal, and smells like a generic cat food (no fishy or otherwise strong odors). The pieces are small enough for her to chew easily, She had no issue from day one with the flavor, and was able to eat it easily from the start.Definitely recommend for anyone with a kitty that has a sensitive stomach!

2019 new look AND a totally NEW formulated RECIPE!!

seems until all old bags are sold, you may or may not get the original version, you could now get the new formulated version that you will need to slowly transition your pets unto!! pretty sad that this once great food, that helped many cats, has been reformulated and now includes chicken as first ingredient that will cause issues for those with cats that have poultry issues and needed a limited protein type food. new recipe also now contains soybean oil which is known to cause allergies issues in many cats!! oh and the kibbles are different too now, grrrr.. other things have change as well, sompay attention to the ingredients to make sure your cat doesn’t end up back to having stomach issues again 🙁 .well since my cat i originally got this for cannot eat chicken anything unless it is only a trace amount like the chicken liver flavor in original recipe, since chicken is now a main ingredient i guess we can no longer use this food since new recipe is no longer going to be a ‘sensitive stomach’ dry food for him at all nor is it going to be for my other cats who get the original recipe mixed in at 50/50 with their wellness core turkey duck dry food. they cannot handle chicken either for everytime they get into our two other cat’s hills perfect weight management dry food that has chicken first, they vomit it back up every darn time..really getting tiring to have these food companies changing recipes when it is NOT needed and without really letting customers know ahead of time at that. right now pics on here only show you the coming soon new bag; it doesn’t say new recipe in pics or description but, if you pay close attention, you will see that new bag look shows different kibbles and it says chicken and rice, so i went to their website and sure enough they didn’t just add chicken into ingredients, they reformulated the whole recipe to be a totally new dry food!!!well guess time to take this food off autoship and start hunting down a new dry food for the soon to be grumpy picky ones when they don’t get their hill’s kibbles anymore.. on the bright side, this food was way too high in carbs anyways so maybe it is a blessing it got reformulated to not be a sensitive stomach food anymore..update: if you are in need of a new food now, i am having good luck with american journey grain-free duck dry food (chewy brand). it is lower in carb (24-25% dry carb matter), there has been no vomiting/stomach upsets since starting it on feb 15th, no poop issues (actually they are now mostly less bulky so less scooping for me) and all but, 2 of our 9 cats that can have it like it. even our IBD cat that was doing well eating original hills sensitive after we got him better with homemade food first, has been transitioning to AJ dry duck food very well too, no poop or vomiting from him either.. only thing is calories are about 100 less i believe per cup compared to hill’s so you may have to feed a little more dry food than you normally feed if you count/limit calories. Still 1/4 cp of it twice a day (about 205 cal) is more than enough calories for most average not that active 12-13 lbs or less cats so you still don’t use a lot of this food either in the end. we are happy with the switch so thought i’d share that info for those not sure what to switch too if their cats cannot eat chicken either or are not doing well on new hill’s sensitive formula..

    Shockingly good results

A friend recommended this food. I wish I had started my two boys on it a long time ago. We usually feed them a Costco brand of food. We mix this food with the Costco food half/half. Almost immediately, we noticed the litter pan rarely stinks after they poop. Which was shocking. The other good thing we noticed is our youngest cat has almost quit farting. Since he was a tiny kitten, his farts would clear the room. That rarely happens now. Also the older one rarely vomits now. And they love the taste! They took to it right away. It’s somewhat soft in texture. I feel really good about giving them this food.

The only food our adopted stray can eat!

Last fall, as winter started coming on early, we adopted Oscar, a yellow tabby stray that was hanging around the house. As we live on a very busy road, we worried both about the cold Michigan winter coming on earlier than normal and the dangers of him crossing the road. Unfortunately, he came with a bit of a problem – he could drive you out of the house when he used the litter box! The odor was unbearable, and his deposits in the litterbox were much less than solid – I was sent running for the scoop and a bag to scoop the box immediately upon him using it at least twice a day. I took him to the vet, of course, to be neutered and checked over before we brought him inside permanently, and had him tested for worms, Coccidia, Giardia and any other intestinal parasites or infections that might cause the odor and litterbox issues – all tests were negative. The vet suggested we change his food (we were feeding him Solid Gold dry, not a cheap food) to Hill’s Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach. I was doubtful it was the food, but to my surprise, it was! Within 4 days of changing the food over gradually until we were feeding him all Hill’s, his stomach adjusted and the problems completely stopped. His deposits in the litter box are now of a normal, solid shape and have very little odor. (I mean, it is what it is, there’s going to be SOME odor, but it’s minimal compared to what it was before!) As a bonus, his dry, brittle coat is now soft and silky – probably more due to the fact that he’s getting regular nutritious food than anything else (he WAS a stray, so was eating whatever he could find).I’m sold on it – that’s all he’ll eat from now on. Yes, it’s more expensive than your average supermarket brand food, but you get what you pay for. If you want a healthy cat, you have to be willing to provide a good quality food.

    Cure for stinky litter boxes

My 1 yo cats’ output was wretched. The odor filled the house and clung to litter box. After trying almost every type and brand of cat litter without any noticeable difference, I added this cat food to regular food per online recommendation. 50:50 mix. Game changer.

    No more vomit

I wanted to wait a while before giving a review on this- to ensure it was truly working as advertised. We have now been feeding this to our cats for over a year. We have a 13 year old tortie who has struggled with hairballs/vomiting for several years. When I say struggling, I mean 4-5 per week. After switching to this food, this has been reduced to approximately 1-2 per month!! Truly impressed for what it has done for our girl. My other cat who did not have this problem also eats this as well due to convenience of only needing to purchase one bag, but he absolutely loves the taste and comes running hard anytime he hears the bag open. Also, this is on Amazon so no need to visit the pet store. My only gripe is that our cat who does not have the vomiting concern has gained a decent amount of weight, so I believe this may be high calorie. Overall, have been very satisfied by my purchase.

    Cat lady’s cat loves it!!

Before feeding this my baby was balding on hind legs and belly. Tried other brands and made cat sick. Fur has come back and she comes a running when it’s in the food bowl. Highly recommended.Vet also is happy I’m feeding this too.

    Clean up cat puke LESS!

Let me tell you about Monkey.Monkey isn’t a bad cat. He’s a bit weird — he likes to sing, he talks to and fights with my innocent houseplants, he snorts like a pig, and he likes to hang from things like a monkey, hence his name. Besides that, though, he’s a sweet, weird little muppet (see pictures). There’s one thing, though, that this cat loves more than anything in the world — more than plant wars, hanging, and singing — and that is eating. He’ll eat anything, all the time. And he’s so excited to eat! He eats when he’s hungry. He eats when he’s not hungry. He eats because he sees the others eating, and wants to eat, too. He makes happy snorting sounds when he eats. It’s his favorite thing. And no, he doesn’t have worms or anything… he’s just Monkey.Any other cat food he’ll eat way too much of, way too quickly, and then immediately puke. I tried separating him from my other cats. I tried feeding him and only him at specific times. I tried so many different kinds and brands of food. The end result was always the same. I don’t know what it is, but with this cat food, he can be himself and puke so much less. Where it used to be at least a few times a day, now it’s maybe once a week.Maybe he enjoys this brand more, and so he eats it more slowly and savors it. Maybe he enjoys this brand less, and so he eats less of it. I’m not really sure; the data isn’t reliable enough to make a statement about it. What is reliable, though, is the fact that he pukes so much less, and that’s good for everyone.

My Picky Persian… Aren’t they All!!!

I have a Persian cat, after he “grew up” and became an “adult” (hahahaaha) we have gone through the song and dance of trying to find a steadfast food for him that he likes. One that meets his needs nutritionally, easy for him to physically eat it (mushy faces can have issues picking up food with their mouth because their faces are so mushed; even though mine has never shown any signs of distress, nor is he underweight by any stretch of the imagination.) and I was also looking for a food not composed of trashy filler ingredients. We have gone through Taste of the Wild, Royal Canin Persian 30, and other various cat formulas and finally, I found a hit!!Hill’s Sensitive Stomach & Skin mixed 50/50 with Hill’s Adult Indoor (Longhair). The mixture of the two is perfect for my needs, it controls what goes in and out of my cat m, and there’s not been any adverse reactions,!! YEEAAAH!!I use the Adult Indoor Longhair version to mix starting around July through January and the Regular Adult Indoor to mix with the sensitive stomach & skin the rest of the year. Because he stays inside all of the time his fuzziness schedule is based on my air conditioning/heat schedule and it’s a lot drier and hotter in the house in the Winter than the summer, So his coat shedding/change is actually in the winter and holy moly there’s so much fur!! I know I could make a whole other him out of the fur I brush out of him. I also get him shaved once a year so that he can feel free of little knots and look really cute for a few weeks too!!

    My cat loves this food

My 18-3/4 year-old-cat, Suki, loves this food more than his special diet food, so I mix them together. He ends up eating both, and I’m happy that he’s happy in the last year of his life.
