Beelink EQ12 Soft Router Mini PC – A Solid Performer for Home Server Setup

I recently purchased the Beelink EQ12 Soft Router Mini PC for my home server needs, and it has exceeded my expectations in several aspects. Here’s a detailed review based on my experience:Hardware Specifications:Processor Performance: The Intel Alder Lake-N100 processor with a clock speed of up to 3.4GHz provides ample processing power for my server applications. The system’s 25W TDP ensures efficient performance without excessive heat generation.Display Capabilities: I can’t comment much on that as I m using it as headless serverConnectivity: The inclusion of WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, USB 3.2, and a 2.5G Ethernet port ensures high-speed data transfer and connectivity options, making it suitable for diverse networking needs.Low Noise: The minimal noise produced by the Beelink EQ12 is a standout feature. The quiet operation, to the extent that I need to open the cupboard to hear it, is ideal for a home server setup.Software Experience:Proxmox 8 Installation: The installation of Proxmox 8 on the Beelink EQ12 was smooth and hassle-free, indicating good hardware compatibility.Stability: The system has been running for a solid two months without any issues. This level of stability is crucial for a home server, especially when hosting critical applications.Application Compatibility: Running a variety of applications, including pfSense 2.7 as a router, Home Assistant OS, UniFi Network Application 7.5 for WiFi AP management, MQTT server, ESPHome, Grafana, InfluxDB, and MariaDB, demonstrates the versatility of the Beelink EQ12. The dual Ethernet ports make it particularly convenient for routing and network management.Overall Impressions:The Beelink EQ12 Soft Router Mini PC has proven to be a reliable and efficient solution for my home server needs. The combination of powerful hardware, versatile connectivity options, low noise, and excellent software compatibility make it a top choice for users seeking a compact and capable server solution. I highly recommend the Beelink EQ12 to anyone looking for a rock-solid, high-performance mini PC for their home server setup.

    Reliable and powerful

I use this as a general pc and for photo editing. It works very well on both. I run a 19inch monitor and a 32inch monitor together and so far nothing has slowed it down.Fast enough for me everything seems to work great. Easy to set up and the fan is silent.

Great mini PC hampered only by its GFX core!

We purchased the EQ12 16GB version for use as a mini file server for our network due to its dual 2.5g network ports and USB-C/3.2 compatibility.Let’s start of with athletics, this thing is beautiful what a great design, very clean, elegant and inline with the other NUCs and Mini PCs.The materials used feel substantial, the case feels weighty and strong and that it will handle any mishaps should they occur. The packaging was great, packaged much like an Apple product and came packaged with all the cables and power we need to get started. The intervals. The 16GB DRR5 was not configured to run at 4800mhz out of the box? We find this concerning as it meant entering the bios to make changes which we feel some non technical users may not want to do.We also noticed that the fans were running relatively high, and while not noisy, it raised questions as to why. Upon entering the bios again, we noticed that the c states, of the professor were not set correctly which meant the processor was essential pegged at 100% at all times, again this required a quick change in the bios, nothing major to most of us, but to SOHO users they may not know to do this, or feel comfortable doing so.The SSD is actually relatively decent, while it’s not running at PCIe 4 speed it far surpassed most mechanical drives and therefore gets a solid pass from us as it’s good enough for most use cases. The fans are relatively quiet, overall the mini PC is not noisey, but under load it can indeed be heard, albeit not annoyingly so.The N100 has a weak GPU and this is a huge downside for those looking to use this for light gaming or emulation, because of this we would recommend the N97! While the N97 sounds like it should be slower than the N100 and after than the N95 this is not the case, the N97 is the N100 with a much more powerful GPU suitable for most emulation at a good resolution and frame rate. While we were only using our EQ12 for serving files through the home, coupled with home assistant etc. the lack of GPU horsepower was not an issue for us, and as a file server this device did a dam good job at serving up files fast to all our devices on the network.Overall, great packaging, reasonable price (needs to be more competitively priced) and a solid well build and specced unit help give this Mini PC A solid 4* recommendation from us.We would like to see a slight price adjustment, an N97 version in tne EQ12 range and with more options for add on cards in place of the WiFi card etc.A solid product, with a reasonable price bracket, good build quality, and great packaging.Recommended!

Honestly 5 stars. Best mini i have baught

Lads no lies actually amazing for the price. I searched for weeks for laptops with the specs this has and they were all priced above 400 and were out of my budget, so i decided to get a mini pc. Also expensive for good quality one, but seen this. Thought it was to good to be true and that it was a scam. I chanced it and when it arrived i checked on the device itself what specs it had, and sure enough it had all. Amazing mini pc, runs faster than most laptops for double the price. 5 stars

    really good!

It shipped with windows 11 out of the box. Just received it today and everything is great so far.My main plan is to use this as a proxmox server with nextcloud, wireguards and pi hole. I will update the review after the installation process.I also have attached the speed test for the stock PCIe SSD. The ram and SSD are non branded ones with AZW sticker on it. installing SATA SSD was pretty easy and I only tried MX500 2TB and it is working great!

    Comes with Windows installed

It’s always a bit iffy reviewing a product like this after only a few days, but here we go anyway. Hooking up the ethernet, HDMI display and keyboard was easy, and I found that Windows was preinstalled. I’m not sure if if was Windows 10 or 11 as once I was sure that it worked, I inserted a USB with Ubuntu server on and rebooted, tapping F7 as it rebooted to enter the boot menu and wiped the drive with a fresh install of Ubuntu server 22.04 which went smoothly. I’ve got a pihole, media server and a few Docker apps running and so far so good. It would have been nice to be able to buy this product without Windows installed as that would probably have made it a bit cheaper, but that’s a minor gripe. It’s been running smoothly for 3 days and so far so good – time will tell how reliable it is.

    Used as a linux server

I needed a Linux server for a project, so on first boot kept tapping F7 until the boot menu appeared and setup the USB as the boot device. The USB contained an image of Linux Mint Cinnamon, which once booted displayed a desktop with an icon “Install Mint Cinammon”. Click on that and selected options to reformat and install to the SSD.OK, Cinnamon is a desktop environment, not a server, but I chose to go this route for the ease of installing/uninstalling necessary software and setting up things like a firewall. As for the machine, it is fast enough for everything I ask it to do. I’m so happy I bought another.

    Superb low cost computing

Needed a new computer for a while. Was debating splurging on a much more expensive laptop but so glad I didn’t. Bought for a smidge under £167 in black friday sales, for everyday computing this little Beelink has coped with everything thrown at it so far, though admittedly it wont be used for anything too demanding. Chose this one as it stated windows 11 pro was included in the description whearas the other big brand didn’t seem to specifically say. Boots up super quick too. Very happy with purchase.

    Disappointed with performance

Quite disappointed to be honest. My WiFi speed dropped to around 10 Mbit, compared to 40-50 Mbit on my previous PC which is almost 10 years old! A processor and 16 GB RAM are at 100% on just system updates and an antivirus software.Of course, it is reflected in the price. However, looking at the spec I expected a better performance. Bear in mind that Windows, unlike Macs, is prone to have more lag over time. You can probably use it for checking emails and browsing, but it was surprising to see that people managed to use it for editing or video streaming. May be mine was faulty but I doubt it. In fact, it was nicely packaged and the build quality is good.Overall:Good conceptGood build qualityGood pricePoor performance for the specsPoor WiFi adapter

    Good for a home server

I have it running 24/7 as a web server plus the Home Assistant and Node-Red server on a Virtual Machine. All working fine, the CPU is more than powerful enough to deal with the load, 16GB of RAM is plenty to run at least one VM. Very pleased with the purchase

    A great Proxmox server

My homelab used to run in Docker on my Synology NAS, but as my demands grew the CPU in the NAS couldn’t keep up. The unit is very small and sits in my network cabinet and runs a whole host of containers including: Home Assistant, Plex, AdGuard, VPN, Scrypted, UniFi controller. It hasn’t dropped a beat since it was installed a few months ago. I might pick up another one soon for a dedicated OpenSense / PfSense box.

    Great for a firewall/router

I bought this specifically to build an Untangle device and it works very well as that. It would also make a great router for pfSense or OPNSense. The 16Gb RAM is complete overkill and the 512Gb NVME SSD won’t ever get full but that’s irrelevant because this unit, fully maxed out running all of Untangles features only consumes 11W. It replaces a Fritzbox WiFi router that was 8W but it’s got as locking, web filtering, antivirus, Wireguard – EVERYTHING – running and it’s 11W.I bought it with a voucher and it was buttons for what it does. It does work as a Windows PC but if that’s what you want I’d spend another £100 and get the Ryzen 5 version with the 1Tb NVME SSD. For an appliance this is ideal.

Bought this an upgrade for my old Zotac ZBox media player. Installed LibreElec 11.0 over Windows Pro without any issues, booted first time. Plays all my HEVC/H265 10bit content no problem and passthru for Dolby/DTS over HDMI works fine.

Very reliable system – surprisingly reliable

I purchased this computer to use as run essentially as a Windows based server. It has been running 24/7 for the best part of a month now with absolutely no issues. It would also be perfect for day-to-day computing use. It’s not super powerful, but it is more than enough for basic to mid-level computing tasks.I was unsure how loud it would be when left on. There is a fan, but it is extremely very quiet. It stays at a constant spin rate and doesn’t ramp up like my last computer did (which was very loud).Overall, very good little machine. Did exactly what I needed it to do.

I already had a couple of these for development and wanted another for general use. All you do is connect up the screen, keyboard and mouse, switch on, answer a few questions and you are ready to go.Although it’s a Celeron equivalent the processor power is fine for general use if you don’t need it for intense graphics or gaming. I compared performance to my slightly older i5 Intel NUC as it is on a par with that.

    USB-C Port impeded by case

I just took delivery of my EQ-12 and there is an obvious issue with it. The plastic case prevents any USB-C cable or device from being inserted correctlyI have tried multiple devices and cables and they all “fall out” because they cannot be inserted correctly. It is such an obvious design flaw, I am surprised that any of the units pass a QA inspection.UPDATE: Beelink sent me a updated case after I contacted them. This meant I had to completely disassemble the unit and put it in the new case. The problem is now solved but this is not something customers should have to do after spending £200+ on a new product. Contact with Beelink Customer Service was good.

Bought for a Kodi/Libreelec upgrade. Not disappointed

Bought this an upgrade for my old Zotac ZBox media player. Installed LibreElec 11.0 over Windows Pro without any issues, booted first time. Plays all my HEVC/H265 10bit content no problem and passthru for Dolby/DTS over HDMI works fine.

    Very surprised with the speed

I am very surprised with the speed of the processor and I actually I thought it was going to be bigger. I love the size, very compact and has all the ports you need.
