Understanding your Cat’s Food Allergy
Food allergies can be frustrating but the good news is that truly hypoallergenic diets are available to help diagnose and manage this condition.
What is Food Allergy?
A food allergy is an over-reaction of the immune system against proteins in the food that would normally be considered harmless. This may be caused by abnormalities in the intestinal tract allowing the immune system to be exposed to proteins that are normally not absorbed across the intestine. In contrast, food intolerance does not involve the immune system – an example is lactose intolerance in cats (they can lack the enzyme to digest lactose, the sugar in milk). Although the mechanisms are different, food allergy and intolerance can be difficult to tell apart and their dietary management is very similar.
The most common signs of food allergy are either an itchy skin or gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting or diarrhoea (or both). Many other conditions can cause these signs so your vet may need to carry out various investigations to rule out other conditions.
Diet is Important.
The reliable way to diagnose a food allergy is to feed an elimination diet such as Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic. If your cat has a food allergy then the signs should disappear when fed the elimination diet (and return when your cat goes back onto its original food).
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic is a truly hypoallergenic diet – it contains selected proteins that have been treated (hydrolysed) to break them down into tiny fragments that are highly unlikely to provoke an immune response.
Once food allergy is confirmed you may chose to either find a diet which avoids the specific protein source that your cat is allergic to (if this has been identified) or continue feeding a hydrolysed diet such as Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic.
Tips
- Any protein-containing ingredient could be the cause of food allergy.
- When carrying out a food trial, ensure your cat eats only the elimination diet and drinks only water. No treats.
- A food trial may last for up to 12 weeks, although a response is usually seen within three to six weeks.
Single Hydrolysed Protein
Broken down into tiny components, too small to cause any immune reaction.
Purified Carbohydrate
To reduce the risk of an allergic reaction occurring.
High Palatability
Achieved through high-quality ingredients and hydrolysed feline palatability booster.
Urinary Security
With St/Ox to help support urinary health in cats which may be susceptible to urinary conditions.

Our Sphynx has problems
We have a Sphynx kitten who has toilet issues. We have spent a lot of money on vets bills and different foods. We were advised to try this and it is the one that seems to be better for him. It does not stop his issue but makes it a lot better. We are just hoping that he will grow out of his problem. Just a pitty that this is not easily sourced.

Caused diarrhoea in both my cats
I was recommended to try this food by my vet for one of my indoor cats who has been diagnosed with IBD. Since it’s impossible to separate my cats when feeding I just changed the food for both cats (one who has no stomach issues whatsoever). Within a couple of days of being fully on this food both cats developed diarrhoea. I persevered thinking I had maybe changed them over too quickly but the diarrhoea has just got worse. After two weeks I have had to give up. Cats love the food though so I guess if a cat can tolerate it then it would be a good food?

Cats won’t eat it.
We are a multi cat household with 2 on specialist diets.3 stars for clearing up the scabby skin.No more than 3 because we had to buy new food as after a week or so none of our brood will eat it. And is so light that cats are still hungry even when they do eat it.

Satisfied cat & customer.
One of our cats has had an on going skin problem that causes her to over groom her abdomen & inner back legs. She also had some scabby patches towards her tail on her lower back. She’s been to the vet , had injections to alleviate the problem but no cure. The vet suggested a prescription diet food as it could be an allergy problem. She’s had another reputable prescription diet food for quite a while but when I wasn’t able to buy it I thought we’d try this one. The results speak for themselves; the scabby area on her back has resolved, she’s not over grooming her tummy as much as she was, & she’s very happy to eat the product- kerching! Happy owner & much happier cat. If you’re experiencing similar problems with your cat this product is definitely worth trying.👍

Helped my cats skin issues
My cat had horrid sores and big patches of fur loss. I tried all sorts to help including v expensive ‘raw’ cat food. Nothing worked. And then I started this and within a few weeks her fur is so much better-I’m so so happy and relieved.

Cat food
This food is necessary for my cat as she has food allergies, it’s on the expensive side. The bag is good as it reseals. It has no odour, which is good, and her bowels seem to be better on it. It’s clean too, except that there are lots of really small bits at the end of the packet, which just gets wasted….

Pro Plan Hypo Allergenic Cat Food
My cat was prescribed this diet by her vet when she suffered from itchy scabs all down her spine from head to tail. The vet wasn’t sure if it was an extreme reaction to flea saliva or a food allergy, so we tried this food initially for 6 weeks . The food has a single source of protein in an easy to absorb form.Luckily the cat really likes the food so there was no trouble getting her to eat it ! It comes as small round kibbles and looks a bit like Rice Crispies only a little bigger. They must have a good flavour as Emerald eats them willingly and they are light and easy to handle.I have now been told that it is OK to include other foods in her diet but will continue with this one as she likes it so much.It is easy to order through Amazon and have the bag delivered to the door.

Done the job!
Our cat was diagnosed last year with a flea and/or tick allergy. He was developing crusty sores on his skin, losing patches of fur and over-grooming his tummy. After the vet initially gave us stronger spot-on treatment it appeared to mostly clear up but then it came back this year alongside occasional upset stomach. To avoid further testing we put him on this food exclusively for 4-6 weeks and it seems to have cleared it up almost completely. We will keep feeding for a while longer and if everything looks good then this is the food for him. He’s certainly needed more water since being on dry food only so make sure the water bowl is topped up regularly, and/or mix water into the dry kibble, but needless to say we’re very happy. Now just got to see how subscribe and save works out as I’ve read mixed reviews re pricing and reliability…P.S. he was a little overweight before having this food but due to the ease of portion control is looking much healthier and slimmer!

UPDATE Great for my Ragdoll cat who has IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
2017: I’ve clicked on five stars ‘I Love It’. The truth is, I’ve never actually tried eating it personally, but my cat loves it. Just over three years ago it was suspected that he had early stage cancer of the bowels. After various veterinary treatments, it was decided that he doesn’t have cancer at this point but inflammatory bowel disease. Now his medication has been reduced to a steroid injection and a Vitamin B12 injection every few weeks. It’s been a hard road trying to find something that Alfie can eat regularly and can keep down, or in, both ends. Now Alfie won’t eat anything else (except Hill’s Prescription Diet Feline t/d Dental Care, which I give him a little of each day, to keep his teeth clean). Purina Pro Plan works. He loves it. I’m glad of it. And my carpets appreciate it too. :DUPDATE 2021: Alfie is now 12. He remains on this product and his coat is long and glossy, his weight is good, he is off the steroids too. Occasionally he has a couple of days sickness (IBD is not curable) but a tablet or two prescribed by the vet soon sorts him out. This is the only food he eats, apart from the Dental Care biscuits already mentioned, and the very occasional tuna treat. Not my doing. Alfie won’t eat anything else.

My cat seems to like this kibble
I have a young male Birman with a very sensitive stomach and till now was unable to keep biscuits down. I tried this as it’s vet approved and so far he has not been sick through eating biscuits, so hopefully this will run alongside his wet food. A much happier little boy!!

My cats love this!
I know it might seem bland to give a cat the same thing every day but Daisy doesn’t seem to mind and reminds me twice daily that it is food time! Daisy has a delicate stomach and these biscuits are great for her. The vet said they are one of the best when I told him what I am feeding her now. Maybe these are more expensive than supermarket cat biscuits, but thee do seem better quality and as you buy bulk, I’m not sure it works out as much more!! I will continue to buy these, as they seem to be good for her!

Well fixed my cat
I was recommended this food by my vet after my cat had regular bouts of diarrhoea and nearly daily vomiting episodes. They suggested I try it as first instance before doing tests. She’s been on it a month and we haven’t had one vomiting episode! It’s great. It does look like rice krispies and the portions are quite generous, which benefits us as my cat actually seems content between meals. I only wish they did a wet version of it.

Great product, but comes with a caveat!
I initially thought my cat had a flea allergy but after spending hundreds of pounds on decontaminating the house and repeated visits to our useless vet, she was still itching her fur out in chunks and had also started to vomit. In desperation we decided to see if she had developed an intolerance to her food, so we gave this a shot – within a very short period of time her dermatitis stared to subside and her stomach settled, and eventually her fur grew back in absolutely beautiful condition. The kibbles are designed to be easily digested so they are small and light, and they actually smell quite appetising so you won’t have to worry about your house smelling like a pet shop! We couldn’t be happier and it seems that our cats are pretty happy with it as well, judging by how they jostle each other at feeding time and guzzle their meals down. Now for the caveat: our cats now refuse to eat anything else!

Leaves my cat content and fluffy
Merlin loves these cat biscuits, they’re smaller than usual cat biscuits and lighter in colour but my cat Merlin is totally content eating them, he loves them and looks forward to meal time.Merlin has had issues in the past with itchiness and baldness, i genuinely believe it was because i was giving him corner shop type bought food, ever since giving him a quality diet like these pro-plan biscuits his fur has grown back on his rump, tummy and back of his legs and is looking better than ever. Not just that but he’s way more content and him being happy makes me happy. I have found paying more for quality food not just makes my cat happier and me but is an investment in better, good health.

2 happy tom cats
Definitely worth trying. So far I think it’s great!!! I have two male cats who love their food but are both very fussy. Before I tried this they would often throw up a their food a little while after eating so I knew I had to try something more suitable. After some research this one seemed to be a hit and it’s so far so good! Only one throw up after feeding my boys this for 2 weeks….impressive

Happy cats
One my cats has been suffering for a while with allergies but we can’t work out what she is allergic to, we had tried different food to no avail and were buying medicines that worked at £100 every 2 months. Until we fed her this food. She can be picky with food so we weren’t sure she would eat it but she gobbled it down like a pig, 2 weeks on this food and she now only needs medication very rarely. Very happy customer.

Brilliant for my kitten with skin problems!!
I have been using this for nearly 2 months now for my 5 month old kitten. He suffered awful scratching and he would cut his skin open every day to the point we had to keep a cone on him 24/7 for about 10 weeks. The vet did biopsies and we couldnt work out what was causing it. She suggested this food and since he’s been on it his cone could come off and his skin has cleared up! At one point his skin looked like elephant skin with hard roles of it. He looks so much healthier and happier now. He eats a lot of it so must really like it. He must be allergic to other cat food. My older cat who is 4 has to have it too to prevent other brands of food being eaten by the kitten and the 3.5kg bag lasts about 3 weeks. Really pleased it worked for him. Just wish I could buy 10-15kg bags.

Does the job
Budget friendly hypoallergenic food. If you spend more on say science plan yes it’d probably work better but it also costs an arm and a leg. You get what you pay for. My cat still needs small dose of steroids to stop his skin reaction but it’s alot better than on regular food.

Great for cat with food allergies and value for money
I have just changed my rescue cat from normal RCannin dry food ( which his foster carer was feeding him) to this product- just 6 days ago. This was because he was itching his head , being sick nearly every day, had soft stools intermittently and dry skin. Also was a constantly grooming so his belly is bald and was quite lethargic at times- he is an indoor only cat so needs to have the energy ran around!Since he has had this food he has NOT been sick once , the itching had stopped. He has more energy. His stools were a bit soft at first but by the 6th day of having this food they are solid again!I am not constantly cleaning up his sick pools and his constant belly grooming and biting himself have virtually stopped. The poor cat had a food allergy and thank God for the internet which has helped me to diagnose this food issue without having to pay expensive vet bills- it is early days but so far so good!.I will keep him on this food only without any treats for another 3 months and if all is still OK then this is his diet for life I am afraid! This food is also fine for long term feeding since it has all of the nutrients a cat requires- and he loves the taste- thank goodness.

Spock is feeling much better on this! Will gradually introduce the suspect biscuits to see which ones make him puke!Looks like anything with wheat in and perhaps maize! One month without sickness but as soon as he is back on biscuits he had before, sickness back! 😜 🤢🤮 poor Spock!!!So far found the whiskers dental bites make him eat grass then be sick! So he is now banned from eating those! No more snoring which is surprising! Peacefully sleeping now! 😍Hairball came up, so still a bit of sickness but not as much!Other cats having to eat it too! Light biscuits flying everywhere! 😆Why one to three months on the second delivery! Waited too long had to cancel and order from local store at a higher price! 🙄 maybe there is a shortage due to Brexit as its very hard to get hold of!! 😐

Absolutely avoid
I bought this product as my cats vet recommended we switch her to hypoallergenic food moving forward after a few days on/off in the animal hospital. This made my cat is poorly, every time she would eat this she would have explosive diarrhoea and vomiting. I don’t recommend and people should avoid if your cat has a problem with her stomach

Great Value, healthy and delicious!
Bought for our cat, he had allergies which could’ve been down to food allergies, this brand was recommended by our vet. Our tabby is quite a picky eater- I was worried he wouldn’t take to the new food, especially since he previously ate both a mix of dry and wet food- he was ( admittedly ) very spoilt. But surprisingly, he loved it! Took to this food very well :)Pros:-Great value for money! Worked out cheaper than the food he was eating before- about 40p a day (for our 4kg cat)-Our picky cat ended up loving it! (Although, we could see he missed his wet food. After he was on this hypoallergenic food for a few weeks, we introduced pure, plain chicken to his diet. I monitered his reaction to it, and I can see it didn’t cause a worsening of his allergies- as a result, we give him some often)-Hypoallergenic food recommeneded by the vet, seems to work!-Healthier than regular food in any case, as it’s a closed formula (unlike most brands)Cons:-Can’t think of any! Apart from wanting a hypoallergenic wet food from purina to treat our tabby every once in a while 🙂

Cat food in a not so strong Bag with poor seal.
Cat will eat it but she’s not overly keen on it. It’s okay I guess. This was my first purchase of this but the Bag sadly was very poor. It had the usual seal across the top. Simple to use. However it ripped very easily when I tried to pull open. The seal burst apart and the bag tore down the front and back. Not very strong. Luckily it didn’t split too far down and none of the food spilled out, but it wasn’t far off it. I’ll buy another bag of this but hope the bag doesn’t do the same as this one

No Good For My Cat
My cat has had diarrhea for a while now. Vet recommended hypoallergenic food before I collect poo samples. 6 weeks in and my poor cats diarrhea is so much worse. He can’t even make it to the litter tray at the moment. Just yellow liquid coming from him. I’ve stopped feeding this now.

Expensive but tasty (apparently!)
My cat developed scabs on her belly so I bought this to see if it would help. Whilst it’s too early to tell if it’s helped yet, I thought I’d leave a review saying that my cat wolfed it down immediately. As did 3 of the neighbourhood cats – including one that’s a very fussy eater! Pretty good recommendation I reckon!!

My cats like it
I buy this because one of my cats can have an intolerance to other food and now I feed it to both my cats. It is expensive but they like it, they eat it all and I don’t have to throw any out. The downside is the bag, the opening is too small and the seal is useless. I pour some into a container and dispense it from that

Hard to find hydrolyzed protein
One of our cats is allergic to chicken and another has IBD, so a hydrolyzed protein diet suits both their needs. We haven’t been able to find the one we fed in the US since moving to the UK, but this is a close substitute and at a much lower cost. The kibbles are small enough that even our toothless cat can swallow them whole, they don’t have a terribly strong odor and they provide all the nutrition our kitties need in a kibble.

Amazing and Great value for money.
This has definitely been one of the better dry foods I have ever seen. I have been bring up cats for 30 years going on and my little one just had 3 kittens and I have never in my life seen such good results. If I had to pick one other it would be royal canin kitten but tried this on the advice of my vet and my cats don’t even eat there wet food now and had them on iams and hills. People say its not good for there kidneys as they get older to have them on a dry diet but that hasn’t actually been proven and its more down to dehydration over a long period of time. every vet will tell u something different. Some vets recommend a dry diet were as some encourage both as some cats struggle to take in the rite amounts of water so that’s the only reason there kidneys can be troubled if they are dehydrated over a long period of time. Again if u read up on it properly there is no proven fact that dry food on its own causes liver failure so people that put that comment up have probably been told by there vet and not looked in to it more. if u ask a different vet they tell u something else. I tend to listen to my vets they pretty much go through everything with u in detail but a dry food diet is perfectly fine as long as u have enough water for your little one. Not so much have the water out but u need to make sure they are taking the correct amount in and u don’t want them over drinking either so that’s why it is a bit tricky but if u do it correct it’s actually more beneficial. Also just a quick heads up on the wheat subject, Its all nonsense cats have been living outdoors before we started having them as pets and they can only have issues with wheat if they have allergies but apart from that it can actually be very beneficial for your little one so 2 very important things that people always tell u to stay away from when in reality there is a bit of truth behind but for the most part wheat and dry food for your little one is perfectly fine. Just make sure u have a complete dry food as some of the dry foods out there are don’t have the required nutrients that a cat will need for there day to day life. Not saying I’m an expert by any means but I’ve done a lot of research on the advice of my vet and everything he tells me is pretty much spot on. If in doubt just speak to your vet and don’t listen to comments.

We were required to change our cat’s diet due to stomach problems. The transition to this food was very quick and easy as the kibbles are smaller than the previous food and therefore easier to eat. The smell of the food is more pleasant too.Our cat seems to enjoy this food and her stomach problems are much improved.Recommended if you need to change to a hypoallergenic food.

Cat enjoys it
Got this since my cat was getting some angry looking redness on her belly and the vet suggested she had some kind of allergy. I have a little automatic food dispenser and this bag was just enough to fill the container to the top, which I believe holds 4 litres.Haven’t tasted this myself, being a human and all, but my cats seems to enjoy it more than what we were giving her before and my 2 year old has also attempted to eat a handful of this stuff a few times so it probably tastes good.Delivery did take a few days so you’ll have to order this when you’ve got maybe about a week worth of cat food left otherwise you might find your cat going hungry before this arrives.Overall pretty good product.

The product is a dietary vet recommended product for cats with certain disorders,IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrome) being one such disorder.Using this product certainly helps my Tonkinese male cat ( age 11 years) control his uncomfortable symptoms allowing him a more normal and happy life. The only problem is that the product certainly puts on weight, I have two other cats who seem to love the product and they too have had weight gain!!
