Fairly good value , but no backlit keys & MS make it difficult to be individual

First of all I have to say it has NO BACKLIT KEYS as some have suggested it has [ see Q & A section] but this could be due to the configuration ? i.e. mine is with an i3 processor, 8GB of RAM and 258 GB SSD.It is quite bulky but no worry to me. This was to replace my 6 yr old Acer s13 with WIN10. Having tried to put my own configuration and programmes on this laptop I have found Microsoft are making it much harder to change what they want you to have in Win 11.. For instance trying to use Firefox browser that I like instead of MS Edge was not easy. You have to disable their S system. The same goes for other non MS programmes so putting obstacles in your way if you are trying to make individual choices. Also the new layout I am trying to come to terms with. So don’t expect it to be all plain sailing as they make you believe. Has a decent sized screen. The loss of backlit keys is a pain. The price seems decent generally though. Only really bought this due to increased storage from my Acer plus the screen section was coming away from the keyboard section so meant an expensive repair. On reflection just about justifying buying this laptop – so far !

Like other ASUS machines, the touchpad stops working properly when it’s warm; very frustrating

I bought this a month ago. Right from day 1, I had issues with the touch pad. It goes haywire whenever the machine is even slightly warm

Very fast, great having the number pad also.

Great laptop for work, holds battery very well and all processes are very quick. Handles most programmes with ease and has very little to no fan noise or excess heat. The wide keyboard and added number pad makes it much easier to use for work. All ports you’d need aswell.Overall very happy.

    Lightweight and clear.

Bought to be used as a basic laptop – email, BBC news, spreadsheets etc – and not for gaming or work related. Easy to pick up and start using – nice screen and perfect for my simple needs. Keyboard has a look and feel similar to my ‘old’ VAIO and is very comfortable. The version of Windows installed makes it awkward to install Chrome and it seems I need a letter from the Pope to do it. I haven’t run the battery flat yet but I can get 6 hours without any worries.

    Good priced laptop

This is a good Intel I7 laptop for the money and is quite fast with above average soundIt handles video rendering reasonably well and does everything else I need it for .Also it not full of bloatware ether .However the battery life is not very good and falls short of its claims. I would recommend it as there really is not anything else at the price point

Slimline, lightweight, perfect for my needs

Nice slimline laptop. Has had limited use so far as we are in the middle of getting ready for a house move. No SD card reader but I knew that when purchasing and simple fix with buying a USB plug in reader. Does what it says on the tin. Nice bright screen and vibrant colours. So far very, very pleased. Would recommend

    For the price its good

Needed a new laptop so spent a couple of days looking what was available. I’ve had ASUS before and it didn’t let me down once so decided on this i7-1255U model. Its a decent laptop for the price point, I wish I’d ordered black instead of silver has my only niggle is the keybooard is difficult to read in certain light conditions.I also purchased extra RAM for it from Crucial via Amazon. A singe 8GB module CT8G4SFRA32A.

    Any good?

I have sold 7 of these this year and my customers love them. The keyboard has a nice feel to it. You can add an extra hard drive but you have to buy the cable and it alone costs £20. Its easy to fit once you open up the laptop. I bought one for myself as my company laptop. The only negative is the battery does not last long before a recharge.

    Good Laptop

As someone who does not know much about laptops and what makes them great, this laptop so far has been working absolutely fine for me. The only game I play is Sims, and so far that has not been a problem to download or run. I stream a lot of shows on Netflix etc, and everything works well. The fan is super quiet, which I like, and the laptop does not get too hot. The only thing I would say is that I think the placements of the speakers are not the best, as they are under the laptop- so this means that when I am sat with the laptop on my lap, it can be a little quiet, even with what I am playing on full volume.Overall, the laptop works fine, the screen is good quality, and I don’t have any issues with it. Especially for the price that you pay, I would definitely recommend.

    A good all-rounder

Bought this to replace a 7 year old Acer. This Asus is a good choice – lighter, slightly smaller and faster. Fan is very quiet. Upgraded the RAM by another 8Gb to deliver 16Mb – the upgrade cost was a quarter of the difference in price of buying this exact model with 16Gb already installed – and took me just 10 minutes to do. So overall a very satisfied customer. My only downside comment is that the backlit keyboard is good at night, but during the day, the letters on the keys are very difficult to see – being a pale grey against as silver grey background. Getting used to it but better contrast in this area alone would make this a better all round buy.

    Excellent Value

ASUS would not publish my review of its x1500EA Laptop so I thought I’d post it here:Good looking, slim and surprisingly fast.It came with some pre-installed bloatware. McAfee nagged me to install and buy it when Microsoft Defender software is built in for free. Edge opened every time I turned the computer on advertising Deathloop. Took me a while to get rid of both.Looked to contact customer services by phone about camera not working but that was almost impossible. (I couldn’t find a way. Others might.) Managed to sort the problem using Google. (Hint: Press F10 to turn camera on and off.)This model only has 256GB of storage but it is an SSD, so very fast. I use OneDrive (Other cloud storage is available) so need very little to be stored on the computer. The screen and keyboard are fine.To sum up: Recommended it for a friend then bought one for myself!Only 4 stars as it can’t make the tea!

    Laptop for browsing

I recently purchased the ASUS VivoBook 15 X515JA, and I am pleased with its performance, especially considering its reasonable price. This laptop is a fantastic choice for everyday use, particularly for browsing the internet and watching videos. The 15.6-inch Full HD display is vibrant and sharp, providing an excellent viewing experience. Whether I’m scrolling through websites, watching YouTube videos, or streaming my favorite shows, the colors are vivid, and the details are clear.Powered by an i3 processor and 8GB of RAM, the VivoBook 15 handles everyday tasks with ease. Browsing the internet is smooth and responsive, even with multiple tabs open. It boots up quickly, and I’ve experienced no lag when switching between applications. The 256GB SSD has fast read and write speeds. It not only ensures quick system responsiveness but also offers ample space for storing documents, photos, and videos. While it may not be the largest storage capacity, it’s sufficient for my needs, and the speed is a significant plus. The laptop offers a variety of ports, including USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and a microSD card slot. This versatility makes it easy to connect to external devices and expand the laptop’s capabilities. The ASUS SonicMaster audio technology delivers surprisingly good sound quality for a laptop in this price range.

    Excellent

This is my second Asus laptop, my 1st died of old age. I use a laptop simply for leisure, no work related topics, and for this, it is brilliant. Easy to set up and carry on. It is a lot faster than my original which is a plus. Price wise an excellent buy. No issues at all.

  23. M Z

    4.0 out of 5 stars

    Powerful but otherwise very “budget”

This is for the X1504ZA model which is i5 12th gen and 16gb ram.I snatched this for under 400 as a warehouse deal – at this price this laptop can be really great value because it’s so hard to find many affordable options with 16gb ram. However, you need to be aware there’s no magic pricing here – significant corners were cut which may or not matter to you.1. Screen: the specs say “IPS-level” but I wonder if this is actually a glorified TN panel? The viewing angles are incredibly poor, using this laptop on the couch is very complicated since you have to be facing the screen at a perfect angle. The colours are mediocre as with most budget laptops but OK but surfing the web etc. The brightness is quite low, lower than the MSI Modern 15 and an HP 14s-dq2502na, probably very difficult to use on a sunny day (but those don’t come all that often eh?)2. Battery life: appalling. You can get 4.5hs of light use if you’re lucky. (I profiled it extensively) This was the same as the 1 year old HP 14, and 1-1.5 hours less than the MSI Modern 15 with Ryzen 7730U with a marginally smaller battery (39Wh vs 41Wh). The vivobook draws on average on idle 1.5W more than the MSI Modern which is almost to be expected as the i5 can’t beat the ryzen in power consumption. This, paired with a small battery and probably low quality components that are very power inefficient (and a larger screen) means you just can’t get much battery life. People claiming it’s great are likely coming from ancient dusty laptops that can barely hold a charge.3. Ports: so outdated. The USB-C port does not support charging nor video out. The poor battery life could be compensated by easy charging via USB-C but no, you have to carry the (albeit small) proprietary barrel charger everywhere which is highly impractical if you move around the house or generally use this on your lap… Also because of this, you can only ever support 1 external monitor so OK but not ideal for say, working. If you don’t care about any of the above then the laptop is actually very good value depending on the price you get it for. The build is really good for the price, I really enjoyed the keyboard (minus the unusual bottom row of the numpad). The touchpad was very good even if the mouse did skip a few times. The bezels are small and the whole unit feels solid for a plastic build and actually looks sleek if you don’t look too hard at it. As a last negative, I’m personally not a fan of the 16:9 aspect ratio, the 15.6″ screen seems too wide and short – I find the newer 16:10 to be far more practical and enjoyable but you can’t have it all at a budget level, just consider this as well. Lastly, as you’d expect the performance with the recent 12th gen i5 and 16gb of ram (and a decent NVMe SSD) is actually excellent for a budget laptop, super speedy.

    Bargain in November

I have an old Packard Bell TJ65 that’s done me 10 years plus, I have to remove the keyboard (Stuck with velcro) then use a screwdriver to short a power up as the power button failed and a real pain to replace but it still works and for an old girl it is fine for me, BUT not for the rest of the family! The old TJ65 has an amazing shiny crystal clear screen as competed with the old Sony cinema laptops, but it is so flippin noisy it drives me mad and I installed a fan control software to quieten it down.So I waited for Black Friday as I do my TV and Mobile requirements and this Asus laptop popped up very early on on Amazon before the sales started and I snapped it for £329. I bought a Crucial RAM 8GB DDR4 3200MHz in the sale for £20 which simply slots in, apart from undoing some screws on back of laptop it was simples, just plug and play, re-screw and done, upgraded Ram to 16GB. I am not a nerd or a techy, I don’t even know if I have done any good, but I feckin hate newspaper websites that kill my laptops and this has done the trick. The Asus is really fast, very very quick starting, I have 3 profiles for family and it’s bullet fast. The screen is not as good as my old TJ65 but you getz what you pay for and it’s fine for what it has to do. If you need a seriously good screen then you need to dig deep right. It is light to carry, the hinges are not looking to be the strongest so will be careful and not take the Michael. But what I really love about it is it is silent, so silent I worry something is not right, I have a £1900 HP work laptop 3 months old and is noisy compared to this Asus! The battery is fine, it lasts for hours and I have never yet had to run for a charger, it is absolutely reliable and suspect that’s because it does not have an energy thirsty fan panging away..The only downside is a real cheap keyboard, my HP is back-lit and posh, this is button press, twang and noisy as you type, but actually, for an old fart like me, it actually helps as I don’t mistype as much!So I am sorry for the wordy review, I don’t do many, but it’s a definite yes from me and I would buy another, if I got some amazingly well paid job that meant i needed another, but I guess I have 3 laptops now so by default have a great job, unfortunately not in the pay scale department!!

    Great little laptop!

This is a fabulous laptop for my needs, I don’t game so I can’t make any comment on it’s use for this purpose but I can say it’s ideal for reviewing, editing and writing articles, browsing the web, watching video tutorials and general internet use. The speed is impressive for such a reasonably priced laptop and functionality suits me fine. I’m definitely happy with my purchase and would recommend for anyone using it for the above functions. I was a little wary of this purchase as I replacing a very old but very expensive laptop that has served me well for 6 years, I was not disappointed, it’s fab!

A well-built laptop that represents excellent value

When purchasing any tech product one always has to take into account whether the product represents good value. At this price-point the ASUS X515 is very good value for the following reasons: -BUILD QUALITY. Excellent. The product looks and feels well-built. One has the impression that with reasonable care, this laptop will last a long time.PERFORMANCE. Surprisingly Good. Considering the spec, I was not expecting the laptop to be particularly fast, especially when multitasking. But I have been pleasantly surprised, for everyday computing tasks it is more than able to do the job. The storage medium is superfast – impressive.MONITOR (SCREEN). Good enough. At first I was disappointed with the screen, the factory settings were bland and uninspiring. But once you have setup the screen the results are very acceptable and the matt finish is excellent as it does not detract from brightness but removes all reflections – very good.BATTERY LIFE. Sufficient. Don’t expect to run the laptop all day on a single charge. It is not that type of machine. But the battery will last long enough for most purposes. Battery and weight work in opposite directions, a bigger battery means longer battery life but also means a heavier laptop. I think ASUS have got the balance between battery life and weight just about right.WEIGHT. A 15″ laptop is never going to be a lightweight option. However I am impressed with the balance that ASUS have achieved between Size; Build Quality; Battery and Weight. Just about perfect.KEYBOARD. Outstanding. I love the keyboard. I touch-type at around 60wpm, so the keyboard is an essential item for me. I have found that I make far fewer mistakes on this keyboard. The size of keys, the spacing and the key-travel are absolutely perfect. 10 out of 10 to ASUS. Possibly the best keyboard that I have ever used.TRACKPAD. Very good. Well worth the time spent getting to know all the actions that this trackpad can perform.USER GUIDE. Excellent. Well written. Covers everything.RECOMMEND. Yes. I would buy again.

    Happy so far

I bought this laptop about 3 months ago. I use it mainly for work and so far I am pretty happy.Pros: I like the keyboard which feels robust and stylish in its way, I have never had any issues with processing power, it generally does all the usual office and web based tasks quickly, and is quite light weight.Cons: You have to look at the screen at 90 degrees for best image quality, I have had comments that my voice was somehow distorted in the laptop mic (so eventually I bought a headset). I experienced the occasional wifi connection issue at first which I resolved by making settings adjustments. I have to tap the touch pad lightly as when I press it hard a pop-up menu appears by the cursor. All in all I am happy with this laptop 3 months in.

    Nice.

Good quality picture , fast to start up.A few down points: no ethernet connection. You have to buy a adapter to connect to USB.The light up keypad is nice but in broad day light ( or not in some kind of darkness ) you can’t see the keys as they are grey with white writing . Not very clever Asus. But as soon as the room gets dark then the keyboard is beautiful and the keys easy to see.Battery life not that great ,I’d say around 3 hours and the battery icon telling you the charge left and the time left is so inaccurate that you cannot rely on it to check the battery status.Nevertheless a nice device.

    Pros and cons

I did a fair amount of research before buying this laptop and it was the best on the market for the price at that time (November 2022 £329.99).I had a couple of issues with it not turning on properly and ended up having to buy a new charger.I needed the laptop for a mixture of light gaming (The Sims 4), business stuff (Zoom, creating docs and graphics) and using documents.I was really pleased with the quality of the graphics, it was quite a noticeable difference. It’s quite lightweight and you can get on ok with the screen size (slightly smaller than my previous laptop). The camera quality for the zoom calls was quite good (pro and a con!)The keyboard set up was quite a bit different to my previous HP, it took some adjusting and interfered a bit with my gaming as I had to keep pressing numlock to change the settings. Minor inconvenience. The touch pad is RIDICULOUSLY sensitive. It drove me mad.Ultimately I couldn’t get on with it. I did more research about what was the best laptop on the market now and I kept getting the same answer – Asus Vivobook. Across a few different price ranges.I don’t know if the power issues was just that I had a glitchy one (sometimes it turns on immediately, sometimes I’ve got to try five times, sometimes I’ve got to leave it for an hour and hope for the best) but that and the touchpad sensitivity was enough to send me over the edge and I’ve had to send it back.I’ve now spent over £100 more on a 17″ HP laptop and I’m much happier. It’s heavier, it’s not as easy to transport and I’m mega paranoid about it getting broken which I wasn’t as nervous about the Vivobook so maybe it felt more robust. I have to say the graphics quality is noticably poorer on the HP.Overall I think it’s a good laptop and would hope that I just had a faulty one but the combination of issues I had with it has honestly put me off Asus and hopefully I won’t have to do this laptop dance again for another few years. There is an element of discomfort trying out a new brand that has affected me not getting on with Asus, but overall the temperamental issues with not switching on and the touchpad were what made me return it. Given the quality of the graphics it’s probably a good laptop for the price.

    A great little laptop.

A great little, light and quite powerful laptop. I wanted a new one and after reviewing a lot I decided that this was the best price/performance laptop available at the time. I have used it every day since I bought it and I can’t fault it. It does everything I want it to. I can surf the internet and open multiple tabs with no issues. I can watch any youtube videos or films which stream too. Highly recommended.

    Great laptop

I found that the laptop was performing really well and it had minor glitches. What’s disappointing is that one of the buttons has come off within 1-2 months of the purchase

Good laptop could have better battery life

ASUS Vivobook 15 X515JA 15.6″ Full HD LaptopThis comes with windows 11 home S so if you need to run application that not in the windows store then you can opt out of the windows S mode and it will revert to the usual windows home 11.This can be done in the windows store to switch version or even upgrade to Pro if needed too.The laptop itself isn’t half bad, for the price you pay its pretty good value its snappy while being responsive and should be able to run most applications and deal with their needs rather well. Its not a gaming laptop nor a system that can be used to run heavy applications, so if you need a system for anything else this is perfectly suitable.Wouldn’t be a bad laptop if your needing something for school, college etc.The battery is probably the only thing that i felt within the price range could have been better it still last around 3 – 4 hrs however, this will also depends on the settings and application used so will vary from person to person.Has most connectivity that one needs so one USB-C, three USB-A one of which is a USB 3.2 a HDMI and micro SD card slot which personally could have been a normal SD card slot.Overall is a quick, snappy laptop that prefect for school or college needs. Will run all windows application perfectly fine.Only criticism is the battery life which i felt if aimed at the student could have been a little better.Build quality is as expected within the price range, its still a nice simple yet sleek design from ASUS.

The TN screen technology is not for me

The laptop spec is perfectly fine for normal use (not heavy creative graphic works) and bit of light gaming too. However, it has got a terrible screen quality and technology (it is TN ; NOT IPS or VA) which is never mentioned anywhere in the product description or specifications !!The viewing angle of the screen is quite narrow i.e. it only can be viewed properly at perpendicular. As you increase the viewing angle, the color will distort and contrast will fade away.

    Brilliant Laptop

I’ve had this for just over a year and this is the best little laptop I’ve ever bought, it’s quick, very responsive, screen is great, webcam great, and it has all the connection ports I need.I got it for about £230 at the time, the best value I think I have got for a product ever, however if it’s going for a little more but better than similar products, I would still recommend this without a doubt.

Very fast, nice keyboard, average display, noisy fan

I have had several ASUS laptops over the last few years and have been generally pleased with them. This one is decent (but not perfect) – still good value for price.( i7 / 8GB RAM / 512 SSD / backlit keyboard)Pros:- very fast- solid keyboard, backlighting is excellent and a must-have for my purposes (laptop used in low light at times)Cons:- display is average but usable, typical of a LCD but I wonder if I should have paid more for OLED (although I understand they are not perfect either)- fan is easily triggered by even low CPU load and a little noisyHaven’t tested battery life.Overall, good value for money. Nice balance between performance and price.

    Don’t use for Linux/ubuntu

Discovered after wiping the machine and installing ubuntu that it came with an MediaTek MT7902 wireless card which is not supported by the ubuntu kernel. Unless you’re prepared to open the thing up and replace the wifi card, or dedicate a USB slot for a wireless dongle it won’t suit your needs if you require network connectivity and linux.Other issues: Touch pad too sensitive. Constantly catching it whilst typing.Keyboard: The enter key is really small, with the ~/# key as part of where you’d expect the enter key to be, though you’ll get used to that.

    great

I am not a tehno but am delighted with this laptop…I was nervous but very easy to set up. Use it for basic stuff & find it very quick. Not bothered with lack of keyboard light & the keyboard is a delight to use. The screen is not extremely bright even at 100% but that saves my eyes so not complaining. For me the battery lasts as stated & the charge time is also correct. It’s robust which I love as I have no fear of breaking something so can speed up my usage. In fact it has given me confidence to use the variety of options offered…saying a lot for a non-tech! I spoke to the Asus team reregistration & got through quick for free. They were very helpful which is also a major plus. Regarding the sound it’s not perfect but I have got use to & am now very happy with the quality. If you’re looking for a laptop for basic, common usage I would highly recommend.

Delighted with it and the only downside is the colour (black). You need super dry hands not to leave marks on it also.

    its…..meh

very little gaming capability, screen viewing angles are poor but might just be down to the panel type, and even though its advertised as having 8 hour battery life, i at most couldnt get it to last more than 2hr30m and that would be brightness at its lowest, battery saver on and other power saving features

    Good laptop bar one aspect..

Very pleased with this laptop and a big step up on the one it replaced except one area.Lightweight, relatively fast processor, silent operation and quick to load programs thanks to the solid star drive. Screen display bright and clear.Downside? Speakers. If you wish to have music or even a video conference with a quite loud setting this laptop doesn’t appear to offer that. If your hearing is 100% it’s not an issue, nor is it for general use – but if you want louder, no.

    Short battery life

It’s a good workstation, but you can’t expect anything outperforming from it. This unit is basically unupgradable, the mother board doesn’t support more ram than what it have, the battery can’t last more than 2-3 hours of intense work. The laptop is good if you need it for your studies. But If you looking for a good workstation, you should probably search elsewhere.

    General look good

The laptop looks good in general and so far it is all working fine. Quite easy to transfer my files from my previous laptop via the cloud. The only downsize I’ve found so far was the sound system which is quite low and only plays the sound from the left side, even if you use the headphones (very disappointing), hence why I gave three stars intead of four. I’ve only had it for a week so I can’t comment on the other features yet. I will do another review is needed in future if needed.
