Way Better for Fishless Cycling than Using Messy Food

I really hated dumping in fish food flakes while trying to cycle my aquarium for some incoming Neocaridina shrimp. Ammonia levels never seemed to go up and I was having to dredge out all the messy flakes a few days later. Found the Dr. Tim’s Ammonium Chloride and figured it couldn’t be any worse. It worked great. Much easier to regulate ammonia levels to get those nitrifying bacteria growing. Got the 2 oz bottle and it was more than enough for a 10 gal. tank. Would recommend!

  2. Leo Pearson

    OK

Pretty much the only way to get ammonia to cycle my aquariums, since ammonia is impossible to find in its pure form (without additives like soap and dye) in Canada. The price is a little ridiculous because the bottle is fairly small, and I know ammonia is fairly easy to come by in America, with more of it available for half the price of this. Oh well. Does the job I got it for. Took a long time in shipping though.Edit: I also realized that the concentration is different from what is in the pictures here, since they have to dilute it more to ship to Canada. The bottle I received, the instructions are 4 drops per gallon to reach 2ppm

It works! Dropper is a little finicky though.

Love this stuff. I used it to cycle a new 5.5 gal betta tank. The dropper is a little bit of a hit or miss. I tested it in a cup before I added it to the tank incase the dropper just poured out the solution. 4 drops per gal worked for me and I didnt have much of an issue controlling the drops.I ended up cycling this tank in 1.5 weeks, but my tank was also moderately planted.Definitely a good value for the size! Would purchase again if I ever find I need more.

    Works great!

Love this product. After starting my new reef aquarium with live rock and live sand along with ghost feeding it did not start the cycle. After adding this product it jump started the cycle right away. I had read differing opinions on the 4 drops per gallon so I played it safe and started with 1 drop per gallon, tested and added more until I hit the 2 ppm. It ended up taking 3 drops per gallon to get there. After using this I added Bio-Spira and that dropped the ammonia down to zero in 24 hours. Would recommend!

  5. Matt W.

    Do not follow instructions

Its ammonia. I guess it is simple as can be, but my gripe (which i also read elsewhere AFTER i added it was DO not add 4 drops per gallon unless you want to have way higher PPM than you wish. I would cut that in half, otherwise you are going to have well over 4ppm Ammonia.

    Perfect for tank cycling

Helped me very quickly cycle my tank using the directions that were included. My fish is very happy and healthy in his tank.

    Cycle first folks

I actually haven’t used this product, but the science is solid. You could just get plain ammonia from the grocery store for less, but this is handy since it gives instructions and it’s easy to find. I keep a bottle in standby just in case I decide to fill up another tank

Perfect for tank cycling and easy to use!

I had been attempting a fishless cycle with fish food for a few months on a 3.5 gallon tank. I wasn’t getting the results i wanted, so i decided to try the pure ammonia route. A lot of forums had mentioned this product and the price hooked me. I got this a few days after ordering and my tank was cycled a couple weeks after. The instructions are easy to follow and the ease of use is great. I highly recommend this product!! Colonel Mustard and I are happy friends now thanks to Dr. Tim!!

Good product, but shouldn’t be used alone

This product is exactly as described, a bottle of chemical ammonia, used for fishless cycling – however, you shouldn’t be putting in 4ppm into your tank to get bacteria to grow, but 1-2ppm- the bacteria gets overwhelmed- as well, you might consider mixing this with biological ammonia, like (rotting) fish food and dying plants.Otherwise, it’s a great product! Would consider this bottle size for smaller tanks though!

What I Needed to Cycle Aquarium

This bottled ammonia is exactly what I needed to speed up the cycling process for my aquarium. Works great!

  11. kjani

    Great – here’s why…

So when I bought my 54 gallon aquarium… I did not know much. I was told at the LFS to buy this API quick start (good product) and some stress cost stuff and all good start adding fish… so I setup this tank and put the API quick start in and planted plants – one melted and the others did well but 3 days later my tank had a chalky appearance. So I took the filtering system apart EHEIM ( great product) washed the pre-filter and everything cleared. Perhaps it was the rotting plant? Needless to say I had to take the tank down and reset it up at home- same thing chalky after 3 days. So what I learned is that is a bacterial bloom but i provided no fish and no ammonia (fish excrement). So basically the bacteria bloomed and died. Ok I got this now. So did a 50% water change and started over again after receiving the DR Tim’s Ammonia Chloride. Put in API Quick start again and now added 216 drops of ammonium chloride- tested in the morning after. Ammonia was NOW at 4ppm. That evening tested and had a twinge of nitrite – just a barely there. Next morning tested and ammonia about 3ppm and definitely at .50 nitrite.Tested that evening now at 3ppm ammonia and 2.0 ppm nitrite – tested nitrate just a smidge. This thing is just rocking and rolling along in days!!! Only days !!!Following the exact path line! Wish I knew then what I know now – don’t use raw fish or raw shrimp or a bunch of fish food to generate ammonia – get a good product for starting quick with bacteria and this ammonia AN you’re set! This sooo speeds up the process!!! I’ll keep updating…UPDATE: next day: ok now ammonia is at 2ppm; nitrites at 2.00ppm; and nitrates SMIDGE… between 0ppm and 5.00 ppm. Plants in tank are thriving NOW!UPDATE 4 days in:Ammonia 2 ppm down from 4ppmNitrites 5ppm up from 2ppmNitrates now 10ppm up from trace5 days – ammonia 1 ppm (when it gets down to about .50 I’m gonna have to add some more in) – nitrites 5 ppm – nitrates 20 ppm now6 daysAmmonia at ZERO – gotta add a full dose again.Nitrites 2 ppmNitrates looks like 2 ppm a teensy bit darker but only a smidge – Nitrates going down?WELL water is crystal sparkling but apparently I have to add more ammonia….so gonna do itPlants looking REALLY good – I wonder if the plants are taking care of some of the nitrates?Tested Ammonia after 6 hours after putting it in and ammonia is back up at 4ppm7 daysAmmonia BACK DOWN to only .25 ppm!Nitrites at 2 ppmNitrate at 5 ppm <- I believe the aquatic plants are using up the nitrates! And keeping it in check.8 daysAmmonia 0 ppm (adding another 1/2 dose 2 drops per gallon approximately 106 drops)Nitrites 2 ppmNitrates 2 ppm 114 people found this helpful

Yup. It’s ammonia. Only problem is the price-to-amount ratio.

It works as intended. I just cannot give it 5 stars due to the small amount for the price. It’s not a bad product at all. But if you plan on using this to cycle a tank bigger than 20 gallons… be prepared to buy multiple of these. Again, it’s not a bad product. Just expensive for the amount.

    Must have for fishless cycling

Worked perfectly for fishless cycling my 5.5 gal tank. I did end up using a separate ammonia calculator after the initial setup which called for much less addition as it was based on my water’s ammonia results. However I was able to fully cycle my tank in a little over 2 weeks which was much faster than I anticipated.

  14. Jessica

    Worked!

This product works as intended. I followed the instructions on the website and my salt tank was at 2ppm. I never even needed to add more as it stayed at 2 until the bacteria got to work. I was able to complete a fish less cycle in my salt 2 in about 2 weeks. I now have 2 Darwin clowns in and they are doing great.

    More water changes

I followed the instructions precisely and got a huge bloom of diatoms (brown algae). That seems unsurprising as the nitrates went sky high, as you’d expect with nothing to eat them. It’s possible that the play sand contributed to the problem – I don’t know cos I haven’t got a silicate test. Either way, frequent, total water changes probably would have prevented this without hurting the cycling process.

    Use with API test

Starting my first tank, so just providing my experience as I still can not get a direct consensus on the use of this product with the API test kit. After 7 days of ammonia testing, my results showed .25. I then referenced the reviews stating the API does not read this product. I decided to continue to add 4 drops to a 5 gallon tank everyday after skipping a few days waiting for results to post. Thinking this would get me to 4-5ppm. Starting testing for nitrites, assuming if the API does not read the ammonia, I simply was going to wait for the nitrites to read to see if the cycle was starting. Nitrites at zero after 14 days. I did more research to determine if I need to get another test to get an ammonia reading. I came across this video which gives some tips on testing the water. How to Use Water Test Kits – DrTim’s Aquaticshttp://youtu.be/ZPiDRid_Km8Based on this video and other research, at 14 days, I made sure I tested the water at the bottom of the tank (I was taking water from the top). The reading with the API test finally read very dark green – beyond 7.0. At this point, I had been adding 4 drops a day for at least 5 days.PH – tested PH level to ensure cycle had not stopped also, if it drops below 7.0, that means you have a bigger problem and might have to do a water change and start over. PH was above 7.0 so I that was good.Nitrites – still do not show. I have read that there is no window on how long it will take to cycle, some citing a week, some citing a month, so I am hopeful now I will hold off on adding more ammonium to try to get to drop to the 4-5.0 level. I have read mixed reviews on if ammonia spikes too high (above 8) that good bacteria can not live and you need to do a large water change. Some cite to wait it out, so I am going this route for now.Other helpful tips – I had a carbon filter (fluval), this might absorb some of the ammonia. Removed it.Heat – increased to 84 degrees.Based on the above, I am not convinced the API test does not read this product. If I would have been pulling water from the bottom, it might have been fine from the start.

Works as advertised. Be careful with dosing

Works as advertised. Be careful with dosage, work your way up. Also watch out for the attached drop nozzle, it may cause larger drops at times which is another good reason to slowly work your way up to your desired dosag and prevent overdosing.I have a 10 gallon I’m cycling after not using it for a handful of years. I added 5 drops at a time, tested, added 5 more… etc until I reached my desired 2ppm.Apparently the guy who made this recommends removing any filter pads when dosing so I did that as well and then replaced them after reaching my desired ppm and waiting 30 minutes. Also dosed half a bottle of Tetra Safestart Plus with Nitrifying Bacteria. Will update with results.Update: Worked very well to cycle my tank. Monitor your dosage and test your water to make sure you’re adding an appropriate amount and you’re golden.Be careful with storage, mine tipped over and I didn’t notice and the container apparently leaked and crystallized around the cap. So make sure it’s sealed and not able to leak at all.

    Perfect for tank cycling

Got this to cycle my 20gal long tank and it worked perfectly. Didn’t even need the whole bottle so now I have extra!

  19. DonnySoles

Seems like real ammonia, but I don’t think dosage is correct.

This is a hard product to review at the moment. I’m in the middle of doing cycles on two different tanks with it. I watched Dr. Tim’s video in which he says to follow the directions on the bottle and not test the water. Ok, so I started my cycle with a rotting piece of shrimp as an ammonia source, and I added Fritzzyme 7. On my API test kit, the ammonia went from 2 ppm to 0.5 ppm overnight. The next day, I saw some Nitrates at .25 ppm. The day after that, my ammonia was almost gone and my nitrite was at .5 ppm. But I didn’t like how the rotting organic matter was making my water cloudy, so I bought this product.I followed the instructions on the bottle. Actually I didn’t. I added only enough ammonia for 6 gallons into a full 10 gallon tank. I left it overnight. The next day, my ammonia read in excess of 4 ppm. I think the ammonia was technically up to about 6 ppm. Then I redosed Fritzzyme 7 to take care of the nitrite. The nitrite was gone after two days, but the ammonia level didn’t seem to be going down at the same rate.I have read a few reviews on here that seem to state that they believe the dosage to be in a higher concentration than what is recommended on the bottle. I also believe this to be true. I think the recommended dosage will exceed 4 ppm ammonia and cause your cycle to stall.

    Excellent As Always

One drop per gallon and ammonium level perfect.Be advised, if you do use this product and an API test kit — the API test kit does not test for lower levels of NH4, only NH3, so your results on that test might show lower than what is actually present. This problem does not exist for kits from Nutrifin or other tests that specifically test for NH3/NH4.Using this product, I cycled one tank in 5 days with a bacterial starter. I did add a little bit more ammonium chloride to keep the bacteria alive because I didn’t anticipate the tank would cycle quite that fast and wasn’t ready to go buy fish to sustain the nitrogen cycle. There is enough in this bottle to cycle more fish tanks than any one person will have for many years.Do not use household ammonia to cycle your tanks trying to save a few dollars. They contain surfactants, buffers and stablizers. The surfactants you can test for by shaking the bottle, but you probably don’t have lab equipment at home to reduce the cleaning product and find out what else is in there. Not to mention, this process would involve heating the ammonia, making your house reek and probably get you sick in the process.DrTim’s product is solid and he has been in the business of providing fish care products for many, many years. He developed Tetra’s Safe Start, as well as Bio Spira and his own One and Only bacterial starter that you can find here on Amazon.Thumbs up Doc!!

    Yaas Dr.Tim

I like how small/compact the bottle is, I did not want a ginormous bottle of ammonia from like a hardware store. I also like how easy it is to administer the drops with a flick of the little tube thingy on the top, less chances of spilling and minimal smelly smells.I am on day 6 of my fishless cycle and between Dr.Tims ammonia and one and only fresh water nitrifying bacteria, I am starting to see nitrites go up and ammonia slowly going down. Soon I hope to see some nitrates, I know it wont be long. Here’s to hoping I will have my tank cycled within another week or 2!It was shipped to me super fast with accurate tracking.I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants to give the fishless cycle method a try.

  22. ASW

    Worked great

Used to cycle a 5 gallon planted tank. Worked great and tank was cycled and ready for fish as per the included schedule. I continued to dose for another week as I was afraid I would get a Nitrite spike but levels stayed at 0.

3-gallon tank cycled in 18 days!

Pure ammonia is harder to find than you might think. Some bottles, such as those you might find at a dollar store, say “pure ammonia,” but they contain surfactants that are not safe for aquarium use.My choices were to buy a huge bottle of pure ammonia from a hardware store, or to try Dr. Tim’s small bottle. Dr. Tim’s was cheaper, so I tried it.I didn’t add any commercial bacterial additives…instead, I added some filter material from an established aquarium.I carefully logged water parameters during the cycling process. Ammonia started dropping at 12 days, nitrites started showing up shortly thereafter, and in 18 days from the start of the cycle, I was getting 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrites, and 10 ppm nitrates within 24 hours of dosing ammonia.Pros:Dr. Tim’s Ammonium Chloride provides a source of aquarium-safe ammonia for fishless cycling of an aquarium. The price is fairly reasonableDirections for dosing are provided on the bottle.Even a small bottle like this will cycle quite a few aquariums, unless you’re cycling something really big.Cons:drop for drop, it’s not the cheapest source of pure ammonia out there. The Bottom Line:It works!

Best way to cycle a tank, period!

Great product. I followed instructions and used this and Start Smart Complete to cycle a 14 gallon bio cube as well as two 5 gallon bucket of pukani (dead rock). I was planning on the pukani to take several months to cycle as I read on the Internet and now it’s ready and My aquarium is not! Thankfully I can just keep adding a couple of drops of Dr. Tim’s to the water every day to feed the bacteria and keep the live rock in the buckets indefinitely (however I found you still have to do water changes or the pH will drop from all the bacterial processes). I am also using Dr. Tim’s to keep the bio filters in a hospital tank and a fry tank alive and healthy without the presence of any fish so that they will be ready should I need them. I was very pleased to find Dr. Tim’s on Amazon after not being able to find any pure sources of ammonia locally.

this is a good way to get pure ammonia chloride

Came in a sealed bag and then in a bubble envelope. there was some leakage but it was contained in the bag.If you plan to do a fishless cycle with your tank, this is a good way to get pure ammonia chloride. Use it in conjunction with beneficial bacteria you buy in a bottle like Dr. Tim’s one and only or Seachem Prime or API stress zyme, and many more. The ammonia will feed the bacteria allowing it to multiply. Once you have more bacteria in the tank, and it’s able to remove all the ammonia within 24hrs, then you’re ready to add fish. Fishless cycling with this method speeds up the process however you do need to keep tabs on the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels with water test kits.If you’re serious about keeping fish, learning about the nitrogen cycle is very useful. It’s all about the beneficial bacteria! That’s what keeps your fish alive. Unfortunately, most fish owners don’t care about this one important cycle and just dump fish into a tank that has yet to establish this bacteria.

    Pretty Good

Bought this for a fishless cycle of a brand new tank. It certainly works, but it would have been better if they included more specific instructions. I found an ammonia calculator online that helped determine how much I needed to add in order to achieve particular ammonia ppm levels, but without that I don’t think I would have figured it out. Some people were saying 3 drops per day, others said just dose it and test until your levels are at 4.0 ppm. Also, it’d be great if they told you how far one bottle will get you. As someone that is new to fishkeeping, I had no idea if I would run through a bottle in a week or a month. I bought 3 bottles to be on the safe side, and month into my fishless cycle, I still have the majority of the first bottle left.

Very easy to use, awesome product.

It’s so important to cycle your tank before buying livestock so I was happy to find this to start the process. It was so easy to use, just add the drops mentioned and follow up with a good bottled bacteria. Track the progress of the ammonia converting to nitrite then nitrate with a liquid test kit!!

A perfect choice for simplifying Fishless Cycling

While doing my first fishless cycle, I was advised to go old-school and use a piece of shrimp. It was…inconsistent, to say the least.I decided to look into a measurable source of ammonia so I could better track what was going on. I don’t have time to drive around town checking hardware stores and calculating doses, so I decided to get something prepared for this purpose and easy to use. After looking at multiple products, I chose this one.I’m very happy I did. It’s easy to use, lasts a long time, and got my aquarium’s cycle on track in under a week. I can’t recommend this product highly enough.

Use this to fishless cycle a new aquarium

This is EXACTLY what you need to start up a new aquarium by fishless cycling. You need this and an API freshwater master test kit. It will take 4-6 weeks. Don’t buy any fish until you have done this. It takes a long time but it’s the only way to avoid killing your fish. Google “fishless cycling” and read up. This product replaces the ammonia that your fish will put out to allow your new aquarium to build up the bacteria that convert toxins to non-toxic chemicals so your fish don’t die. If you can get some rocks or an old filter sponge from another person’s already-functioning aquarium you can put it in to “seed” with the beneficial bacteria. It’ll still take a week or 2 at minimum. USE THIS AND THE TEST KIT so you don’t kill your fish and give up on fishkeeping.

If you are new to aquarium keeping I can recommend cycling your tank using this rather than fish

I have a 30 litre aquarium and am totally new to keeping fish. Having tried twice both totally unsuccessfully to cycle my tank with fish, having followed all the guidelines, I discovered you can do the cycling with ammonia ( something the fish suppliers failed to mention when I was struggling with my set up! But we’re quite happy to sell me fish). I downloaded the ammonia cycling information from the code supplied with the ammonia solution. It is very informative and explains the cycling from ammonia to nitrites and nitrates very well and once completed you can then introduce your fish. The literature did say after 14 days my cycling took 23 days until I was happy the ammonia and nitrite levels were 0 each day. I then bought and introduced 6 danios…well success and very happy fish. My tank water is crystal clear, I did one partial water change after 19 days. I recommend setting up your fish tank in this way as it is so upsetting to loose fish during the cycling process. It’s excellent value for money and providing you carefully follow the instructions you shouldn’t have any problems.

  32. LK

    Worked Well

The online instructions were clear and easy to follow (although it would have been nice to receive a printed copy). The ETA for cycling was about 2 weeks, but my 20gal tank took 3-4 weeks to cycle while using the ammonia and a seperate product of bottled bacteria. I would still recommend using this product because it’s less messy and quicker than using fish food. (Fish food has to break down to produce ammonia and then you have all this gunk in your tank). Overall a good product for fishless cycling and I would use it again.

    Good Stuff,,

My aquarium size is 450L and I tried for 2 month to cycling and no result. I used DrTim’s Aquatics Ammonium chloride 2 OZ and I put all in my aquarium in same time!! 🙂 and ammonia rise to Top after five minutes and after 2 days 0,0 and No2 rise too much, than didn’t find colour for it in my JBL test!!! 🙂 and after 48h No2 showed 0,0 too. and now 2 discus are in Tank. amazing and Thank for this product.

Probably not worth the shipping wait if you’re in Canada

Works awesome for a fishless cycle but it took absolutely forever to get here from the States. Next time I’d just toss a dead shrimp in my tank instead.

  35. RevanREK

Perfect for fish less cycling a new aquarium.

Perfect for fishless cycling a new aquarium, I followed the instructions and my tank has cycled. Much more accurate then using fish food or household ammonia.

    Good Product.

Received this product today, it arrived quite fast.Although i have not tried cycling a tank with it yet, i did however put a drop in some water to see if what i was receiving was indeed pure ammonia and would read on my test kit, which it did.so if you’re looking to speed up the cycle in your aquariums this will get you there a bit faster without killing a fish or two.the only reason this product does not get 5 star is because the bottle leaked during shipping so i lost about 1/4 of the bottle but it should last a long time so i’m not terribly worried.i would recommend this product.

    Dr Tim’s ammonia

I had been feeding my new aquarium, fish food and bacteria but nothing had really moved on after several weeks. So I tried this and the cycling process, really started.Great service and product.

    Starting off a new tank

New to aquatics- wanted to set up new tank asap to transfer black moors to a larger tank. This seemed to quicken this process

    Sped up the cycling process

The product really sped up the cycling process, I seeded the actuation with live plants (from established tanks), and filter media. I didn’t follow the recommended dosage. I used a test kit to ensure I maintained an ammonia level of 3 ppm of ammonia. Which used less ammonia than would have been recommended. I used 1/2 the bottle to cycle 60 gal.

  41. Tea Lover

    Excellent and potent.

I was using household dollar store ammonia and that worked well. But there is a lot more guess work involved with doing that because you do not know the concentration of that ammonia or the drop size per gallon of water. This product is strong, effective, and does a good job helping you get close to accurate readings for fishless cycling. The reason for one star being removed: it’s hard to count the drops. The first time I turned the bottle to drop ammonia into the tank it had to have been like 10 drops coming out at once without squeezing too hard, so be careful on initial use.Do what I did: start the dropping AWAY from the tank to get an idea of what the drop rate is like for the amount of pressure you put on the bottle and then you’ll be able to get an accurate number of drops. Also, it’s not fool proof. Test your water to see how the chemistry of your tap water interacts with the solution so you can get an idea of how many drops per gallon you should use. Everyone’s water and tank is different.

    Dr Tim’s Ammonia Choride

I guess this worked. I used this to fishlessly cycle my tank with a bacteria jumpstarter. My API test kit wouldn’t properly measure this kind of ammonia (it’s because of the kind of kit the API is, not a problem with the ammonia) so I used the instructions on the bottle, and kept dosing it for full or half every other day to every day.I don’t think this ammonia is weak. I think the people thinking it is weak are using an API test kit. If you keep dosing until it shows up at the level the instructions tell you, you are going to way overdose your tank. The price was much better than finding a bottle of pure ammonia in a store, and then having a quart or gallon or whatever leftover. One bottle of this stuff is enough to do hundreds of tanks, so after you cycle your tank, it’s kind of worthless unless you have more tanks to cycle. I guess if you had a plant-only tank, you could use this to fertilize a little for ammonia-loving plants. I am not saying this is a negative thing or whatever. The product did leak in shipment, however. It came in a small sealed bag, and none of it leaked onto the rest of my shipment. But there was a small amount in the bag.

    Ammonia Alternative for Fishless Cycling

Ammonium Chloride is different than Ammonia. Both can be used for Fishless Cycling an aquarium. This product works and it can be used to cycle an aquarium/keep it cycled without fish. Some things to note:-The active ingredient in this product is Ammonium Chloride, which contains chloride ions. Chloride is harmful to live plants. If you have live plants in your aquarium you may want to exercise caution using this product or use Ammonia instead.-This product is very potent and seems to become more so over time (like if it sits on a shelf for a year). I advise following the instructions at a 1/4 dose or 1/2 dose then testing the treated water to see if the ammonia ppm is at your desired level. Then add more product in small increments as needed until desired ammonia ppm concentration is reached.-The instructions are easy to follow. The small container and ability to dose drops per gallon is convenient. It works and it’s a nice alternative to buying a big container of Ammonia. Good value.

Works, but keep im mind addtional steps for planted tanks

Does exactly what you want it to do, but the recommended dosage does not account for planted tanks, thus you’re bound to overdose and stall your cycle. If you have a planted tank, using ADA Amazonia and the like, your substrate will release additional ammonia. In conjunction with using Dr. Tim’s ammonium with recommended dosage, your ammonia reading will be well beyond 8 ppm. Anything higher than 6 will slow and then stall your cycle, because the bacteria will not be able to grow in such high ammonia conditions. For planted tanks, I recommend half dosage and water changes on a weekly basis based on daily test readings – OR finish your cycle without substate and then drain and then add substrate.Additionally, the bottle is really tiny compared to other solutions like Ace Hardware’s ammonia, and price wise, you’ll get more out of Ace’s. But I guess it’s more “safe” to use Tim’s, besides Tim’s will last you for a few hundred gallons.

    Works safely

I must say I was anxious to set up my 75 gallon tank and transfer my African Cichlids into it. I purchased this off of Amazon at a great price and it was delivered quickly. I used it for maybe 3 days out of five using less each day. I must say after five days I was able to safely transfer my fish into new tank. Now I did add some substrate from old tank at beginning that probably had some bacteria already but not much compared to size of new tank. My tank cycled much quicker using this ammonian chloride from Dr. Timms. I am certain this helped a lot.

    Perfect for cultivating bacteria :).

Not much to say about this stuff. You get what you pay for, and if you want the best, you get DrTim’s. DrTim’s Ammonium chloride is a tried and true product for aquarists. NEVER add this to a tank with living fish; however if you find yourself with a newly setup tank, or a tank without any livestock, you’ll need a source of ammonia to keep the nitrogen cycle running.Using DrTim’s and a water tester kit, I was able to keep my filter media healthy for several months, so that when I finally restocked there was no spike in ammonia, and I did not have to wait for the nitrogen cycle to begin — it was in full force from day 1 and my ammonia/nitrite never even registered, as the bacteria was already more than capable of handling the load placed on it.Would definitely recommend for anyone who needs to keep their filter running without any life. No good if anything is still living in your tank though — they won’t be too happy if you’re spiking the ammonia levels.

It’s pure ammonia as advertised, but you’re gonna need a lot of these!

As some of the other reviews have said, this is not enough ammonia to fully cycle a tank. I bought the larger bottle which was a little under 5 oz. and it got me through 2-3 days of keeping the ammonia level in a 55 gal at around 2 ppm. To fully cycle a tank of course you need to start out at around 5 ppm and then keep a high enough level to feed the nitrifying bacteria for weeks before your biofilter is established. This might be enough to cycle a 5 or 10 gallon. It’s much more economical to purchase the gallon of pure ammonia at Ace, even if you’re only going to use 1/4 of it and then stick the leftovers under a sink somewhere. I do plan to keep refilling the little dropper bottle from the gallon jug though because I hate having to open the big gallon of gag-me ammonia every time I need 1-2 ml of it.

Ammonia has been zeroing out fine but nitrites have not

Just bought another one of these.I have a 29g saltwater biocube that I started cycling about three weeks ago. Ammonia has been zeroing out fine but nitrites have not. I have followed the directions clearly to wait 24hrs if ammonia or nitrite levels are not at 0ppm, then (if they are both back at 0ppm the next day) dose ammonia back up to 2ppm and wait another 24hrs. I came very close (ammonia 0ppm, nitrites 0.25-0.50ppm) but the nitrites have spiked since then. I emailed DrTim’s but they haven’t really responded with a solution so I guess it’s just taking a bit more time with my tank. PH also doesn’t seem to be an issue (7.6-7.8).So I do recommend this product, but just be wary that it may take more time than it says, as each tank is different from the next.

    Works as advertised

When I received this bottle a small amount had leaked out during shipping. Just enough to discolor the label slightly so it wasn’t a big deal to me. The hole in the bottle that creates the drops wasn’t properly sized and it made counting the drops near impossible as it wanted to come out in a stream instead even with slight pressure. Did some searching and found a base that indicated about 20 drops per milliliter. Since most liquid test kits come with vials with a 5 ml mark it was easy to use that as a base line for dosing. This also will save you from having to count out a lot of drops every time. The product does what it is supposed to, and is great for completing a fishless cycle. I didn’t use any other products or established bio media so it took about four weeks to cycle my tank with this product. With the limited availability of clear ammonia these days this product is a good solution. I would recommend it to anyone starting a new tank. There’s no sense in putting fish through a potentially deadly cycling process which, even if it doesn’t kill your fish, will surely have lasting effects on their long term health.

    Hard to Find Elsewhere

Howdy-We purchased Dr. Tim’s Ammonium Chloride to fishless cycle our 36 gallon freshwater tank. After searching online through many forums and blogs, there just were too many inconsistencies recommending certain brands or surfectant-free bottles from dollar general stores, or Ace Hardware ‘Janitorial Strength’ Ammonia.I even read where a lady had called Ace Hardware’s Ammonia manufacturer to confirm its purity, being told it was actually not pure ammonia but had a bleach-like additive.Anyhoo, this product fit the bill for laboratory grade pure Ammonium Chloride and pure water, giving us peace of mind we’re starting off on the right foot in the long (but worthwhile) process of fishless cycling. (I’d hate to realize in three weeks that I poisoned the process and had to start over b/c of tainted ammonia)One Warning: The product arrived in a flat manilla envelope with bubble lining in our mailbox, but half of its contents had spilled out during transit. We will most likely still have more than enough to finish our cycle on our 36 gallons (it doesn’t take that much).

Bottle Cap Fail…but made it work okay.

I’ve been trying to fishless cycle a new 60 gallon aquarium with food. I realized that this method is slow and stinky so I decided to try Dr. Tims ammonia method. This product and cycling method is tried and proven so I’m sure it will work just fine. My beef is with the bottle cap.I received the Dr. Tims along with the One and Only with the wonderful Prime next day delivery service. The bottle I received looked nothing like the bottles I see in the pictures I see on Amazon or the You Tube videos. The small 2 oz. bottle pictured everywhere has a little “eye drop” type top, like on the API bottles. The Dr. Tims bottle that I received had a regular screw on cap along with an additional “flip up dropper” cap included in the package.First of all, the bottle did not have a factory seal. I’m not sure if that is unusual or not since this is my first experience with Dr. Tim. I also noticed there was no ammonia smell AT ALL. I found that unusual…not sure if this brand of ammonia, actually smells like ammonia or not??So, despite my questioning of whether this product is genuine of counterfeit, I screwed on the “dropper” cap and went to dose the tank. I was expecting to be able to turn the bottle up and dose on drop at a time. Instead, what I got was a big squirt before I could even begin count drops. So, I have no idea of how much ammonia (if it really is ammonia?) I dosed. I tested this morning and fortunately it looks like I didn’t overdose with a reading of .25 to .50ppm.So…there was a slight increase in ammonia so I can assume what was in the bottle was actually ammonia. On the downside, having no idea of the dose that was originally applied, I’ll be flying blind from here on throughout the rest of the cycle.UPDATE: The product in the bottle was in fact ammonia and is doing a very good job of cycling my tank. Only problem now, is getting out of the house to buy fish to keep the tank cycled.I was a little harsh on Dr. Tim’s cap. I’m alway on guard with I order something from Amazon and it’s slightly different than the picture. The cap was still a P.I.A. when I used it. Had to be extremely careful to not let it squirt out…made counting drops very difficult but I mastered it.

    Perfect for a fishless cycle.

I used this with ATM colony and it took about 28 days to finish a fishless cycle. Working with the API test kit, I simply followed the instructions but it didn’t happen in the the short time stated but that didn’t bother me, it was done properly and the fish are not happy and healthy in a fully cycled tank without stress.

this thing is very specific, but its magic, …

this thing is very specific, but its magic, it DOES mimic fishes ammonia and can get a cycled aquarium (i just ended one this week) in 5-8 days, instead of 3-4 weeks with fishless. I HAD PLANTS THO, 7gal, 3 moss walls, 1 java fern. thats it, and of course, tetra safe start plus, 1/4 bottle, and 3ml of this product per 48 hours…When the ammonia is 0.5ml per gallon, and 0 or near 0 ammonia in 12-15 hours. and 0 nitrites and some nitrates another 7-12 hours later -> well cycled. i didnt want to have sick fishes or dead shrimps as a price for a well cycled tank. This DID helped me a lot.thanks !

Great way to cycle a tank

This stuff is perfect for cycling a new tank. Add to 2ppm and add in some live bacteria or used filter media and you’re rolling.

    Disappointed

Used to use this product years ago when cycling my tanks as i was and still am against fish in cycles. You seem to have to used a lot more of the product in order to gain the right ppm of ammonia, also if memory serves me right there used to be a strong smell of ammonia if you dared had a sniff…Now there’s practically no ammonia odour..All points to a less concentration of Ammonia Chloride..therefore need to buy more.

The best way to start a new tank.

Best way to start a cycle, fish less will not inctroduceinduce sickness in the tank due to improper water parameters for the poor fish that have to cycle the tank. That make 20 year the first time I use this methode, I don’t know why is not the only method now to start a new tank…I guest is too cheap because you will avoid manny problem, and Local fish store will not sell you as mutch problem solver product!Just need to monitor the amoniac in the tank to a level (is write on the bottle).Buy the amoniac alert to monitor…Will work for any tank and biological load size. And please quarantine every living before the worst happen. The question is not if it will happen is when?

    Highly recommend

My fishless cycle had stalled and within 3 doses of this product, all my water parameters were normal. Skip the fish flake method for fishless cycling and use this product. Great value for the low cost.

    Awesome!

Right now i’m currently in the nitrite reading stage of the cycle. Took 2 weeks for that to happen. It also works way faster with a higher pH. My first attempt i had really soft and acidic water and there was no change for the whole month i was testing. After a water leak scare (false alarm) i refilled the tank and basically started over but added crushed coral. and like i said, it took about 2 weeks for nitrite to start showing which didn’t happen at all in the first try. This stuff works. Definitely faster than using fish food as an ammonia source.
